There are many islands in the South Pacific Ocean and no one knows how the people who


live on these islands came to be there. They are very much like people who once lived in Peru on


the west coast of South America.


There is a legend that, when their country was attacked and


conquered, these people left Peru on rafts and set off across the sea to the west. The legend was


that they were taken across the sea by one of their ancestors, Tike, son of the sun.


A Norwegian, Thor Heyerdahl, believed that they may have reached the South Pacific islands.

laughed at but he decided to prove it. With five other brave men, he built a raft just like the one

s raft was made of nine balsa- wood logs tied together with ropes. The longest log
