Australia and the United States are
about the same in size, and their western lands
are both not rich in soil. It was the
eastern coast of Australia and America that the
English
first
settled.
and
both
colonies
soon
began
to
develop
towards
the
west.
However,
it
was
not
because
the
population
was
increasing
that
this
westward
movement took place. It was mainly
because the English were searching for better
land.
Settlements
of
the
western
part
of
both
countries
developed
quickly
after
gold
was
discovered in America in 1849 and in
Australia two years later.
There are
some big differences between these two countries
as well. The United
States gained its
independence from England by revolution
while Australia won its
independence without having to
go to war. Australia, unlike the United
States, was
firstly turned into a
colony by English prisoners and its economic
development was in
wheat growing and
sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had
fifteen times
more sheep than it had
people, or almost half as many sheep as there are
people today
in the United States. Yet,
in spite of these and other main differences,
Australia and
the United States have more
in common with each other than either one has with
most
of the rest of the world.

D. fewer people lived there
(

fifteenth as many people as sheep
B.

States
D. the United States had twice
as many sheep as people

The
office
has
always
been
a
place
to
get
ahead.
Unfortunately,
it
is
also
a
place where a lot of natural resources
start to fall behind. Take a look around next
time you're at work. See how many
lights are left on when people leave.
See how much paper is being wasted. How
much electricity is being used to
run
computers
that
are
left
on.
Look
at
how
much
water
is
being
wasted

solid waste is being thrown out in the rubbish
cans. We
bet it's lot.
Now,
here are some simple ways you can produce less
waste at work. When
you are at the
copier, only make the copies you need. Use both
sides of the paper
when writing
something less important. Turn off your lights
when you leave. Use a
lower watt bulb
in your lamp. Drink your coffee or tea out of your
mugs instead of
single-use
cups.
Set
up
a
recycling
box
for
cans
and
one
for
bottles.
And
when
you're
in the bathroom brushing your teeth or washing
your face, don't let the tap
run.
Remember, if we use fewer resources today, we'll
save more for tomorrow.

第五篇
Over a
hundred years ago people in London were surprised
to see a very unusual
boat sailing up
the Thames River. The boat was eighty feet long,
flat-bottomed, with
big wooden eyes on
both sides in the front and was colorfully painted
at the back.
People came to know it was
a sailing boat from Fuzhou in China. The boat had
sailed round the Cape of Good Hope, up
the western coast
of Africa and finally
to
England. It had covered fifteen
thousand miles---more than half of the distance
round
the world.
Although
it
was
unexpected,
the
Chinese
were
warmly
welcomed.
The
boat
carried
goods such as silk and tea as well as a number of
gifts from the Emperor of
China for the
Queen of England.
