Hughie

Erskine

was

in

love.

The

girl

he

loved

was

Laura

Merton,

the

daughter

of

a

retired

army officer. They were the best-looking couple in London, and had not a penny between them. Her

father was very fond of Hughie, but would not hear of any engagement.

“Come to me, my boy, when you have got ten thousand pounds of your own, and we will see

about it,” he used to say; and Hughie looked very miserable in those days.

One morning he went to see a great friend of his, Alan Trevor, who was a painter. When he

came into the studio he found Trevor putting the finishing touches to a wonderful life-size picture of

a beggar-man. The beggar himself was standing on a platform in a corner of the room. He was

a

dried up old

man

with

a lined face

and a sad expression. Over his

shoulder was

thrown

a rough

brown coat, all torn and full of holes. His thick boots were old and mended, and with one hand he

leaned on a rough stick, while with the other he held out his ancient hat for money.

“Poor old fellow!” said Hughie. “How miserable he looks!”

At that moment a servant came in and told Trevor that a man wanted to speak to him. Trevor

went out.

The old beggar-man sat down to rest for a moment. He looked so miserable that Hughie pitied

him, and felt in his pockets to see what money he had. All he could find was a pound and some

pennies. “Poor old fellow,” he thought to himself, “he wants it more than I do, but

I shan’t have

much money myself for a week or two”; and he w

alked across the room and slipped the pound into

the beggar’s hand.

The old man jumped, and a faint smile passed across his old lips. “Thank you, sir,” he said,

“thank you.”

That night Trevor told Hughie that the old “beggar” was Baron Hausberg, one of the

richest

men in Europe, who had asked him a month before to paint him as a beggar. He also said that he

had told the old man all about the lovely Laura and the ten thousand pounds.

The

next

morning,

as

he

was

at

breakfast,

an

old

gentleman

brought

Hughie

a

letter

from

Baron Hausberg. On the envelope was written, “A wedding present to Hughie Erskine and Laura

Merton, from an old beggar”, and inside was a cheque for ten thousand pounds.

My husband was in the Royal Navy, stationed at the Port of Wilmington while his ship was

waiting to sail up the New York Harbor for the Bicentennial in 1976. While in Wilmington a

friend's mother met a bunch of the English sailors in a bar in downtown Wilmington. They invited

us onto the ship; she invited them for a barbecue. We had a wonderful time. After they went to New

York several of the sailors got off and spent time on the train going back and forth from

2

Wilmington to visit their new found friends. Graham was one of them and after spending all the

time we could together he left with his ship. We kept in touch and I flew to England to stay with his

family at Christmas for two weeks and we were engaged, he came to visit the following Easter and I

went back the next August. That visit he broke up with me and I flew back to the States in tears. A

few years later he married in England, I married in the States and we lead separate lives for 25

years.

I was married in 82, had a baby in 86 and was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer 6

weeks after my daughter was born. I was 26 and was given a 5 % chance to live 5 years. After a few

years my marriage ended and I sent a letter to Graham’s mother because I had neve

r forgotten him

and was getting in touch with important people and taking care of things you do when you think

you are dying. It took the letter awhile to catch up with his mother as she had moved several times

over the years. She gave the letter to Graham and he called me. He was married with 2 sons; one

was the same age +4 days as my daughter. Over the years we talked on the phone a few times and

sent pictures and the occasional card.

I remarried in 92 and we lost touch until he called on New Years Eve of the millennium.

Both of our marriages were ending for various reasons but we still had an ocean between us and

hadn’t seen each other for over 20 years. In August he was coming to the States on business and

stopped by to see me. It was as if we had known each other forever and no time had passed with us

apart. He came back over several times to visit when he was over for business and we fell in love all

over again. He was transferred to Atlanta, GA. On 9/11 he drove straight from Atlanta to Delaware

to be with me and asked me to marry him that night. We were married on Valentines Day 2002. I

never let him forget (jokingly of course) that had he not broken up with me we would have had 25

more years together than we have had. He is definitely the love of my life.

1. In which year did they break up with each other?

A. 76

B. 86

C. 77

D. 92

2. How many times did the author get married in all?

A. twice

B. three times

C. four times

D. five times

3. The author lived in

.

A. Wilmington

B. New York

C. Atlanta

D. Delaware

4. When were they married?

A. on Feb. 14

B. on Apr. 1

C. on Sept. 11

D. on Dec. 25

3

5. Which of the following supports the main idea of the passage?

A. All shall be well, Jack shall have Jill.

B. East, west, home is best.

C. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

D. Let’s cross the bridge when we come to it.

When

John

and

Victoria

Church

arrived

in

New

York

from

London

for

one- year

stay,

they

brought no furniture with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy

used furniture. But they soon learned about a new way of furnishing an apartment or a house that

more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishing (furniture, dishes, and so on) has

become one of America’s fastest growing businesses.

Why

do

people

rent

their

home

furnishings

instead

of

buying

them?

Many

kinds

of

people:

international

to

buy

furniture

they

really

like.

Meanwhile,

they

rent.

And

people whose work takes them from place to place are saved the trouble and cost of moving their

furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new home.

One family, now settled in a large, beautiful home, liked their rented furniture so much they

decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But they don’t like to tell people about it.

The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors

might think.

1. The reason why people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them is that

.

C. they can save the trouble and cost of moving their furniture.

D. all of the above.

2. Where do John and Victoria Church come from?

4

A. They came from New York.

B. They came from London.

C. They came from both New York and London

D. lawyers

4.

The

family

which

moved

in

a

large,

beautiful

home

doesn’t

want

people

to

know

this

because

.

A. the furniture is so beautiful

B. the idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new

C. they are not quite sure whether their neighbors like their doing

D. A, B and C

5. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Rent or Buy

B. You Can Do Whatever You Like

C. Better Not Buy

D. Better Not Rent

Believe it or not, I hate birthdays. First of all you keep getting older, and second you always get

presents you can’t stand. If I could just have a nice chocolate cake all to myself, I’d be very happy.

But no! I have received more ties, pajamas, umbrellas, and gloves than you can imagine. I keep all

my unwanted gifts piled neatly in a corner of my closet. If I need one of the items, I draw from my

stock, but that is a rare occurrence. The result is that my pile is quite large.

One day, my Aunt Gloria called me.

“Hello, Shelley,” she said. “We’re having a surprise birthday party for cousin Stove. Will you

be able to come on Thursday the 29

th

at 2 p.m.?”

“One minute, while I look at my calendar,” I said.

“Too bad,” I

thought to myself. “I’m free. I guess I’ll have to go.” To Aunt Gloria, I said, “Yes,

that day looks O.K. to me. I’ll be there. Should I bring anything for the party?”

“No,” answered Aunt Gloria, “

just bring yourself

.”

The

morning

for

the

party

arrived.

After

some

thought,

I

decided

that

it

would

be

proper

to

5

bring my aunt a little gift. I thought it would please her. I had a good stock of gifts in my closet, and

so I decided to rewrap one and offer it to my aunt. It was getting late by the time I got around to

wrapping it. So I grabbed the first box I saw and hastily wrapped it.

My relatives were all there when I arrived. They were glad to see me, and if the occasion hadn’t

been

a

birthday

party,

I

guess

I

would

have

been

glad

to

see

them.

Uncle

I’d

“You look wonderful,” he said.

I

plowed

my

through

a

dozen

more

relatives

to

Aunt

Gloria.

“Here,”

I

graciously

said,

holding out my gift. “A little something for you.”

“Oh, that’s very kind of you,” said my aunt. She began to unwrap the gift. “I wonder what it

could

be,”

she

murmured.

Then

she

began

to

read

a

card

that

was

enclosed,

a

card

that

I

didn’t

remember having put in.

“Dear Shelley,” she read, “hope you enjoy these gloves. They’ll keep your fingers warm in the

winter. Love, A

unt Gloria.”

1. The reason why Shelley hates birthdays is that

.

A. one keeps getting older

B. one always gets gifts one can’t stand

C. both A and B

D. neither A nor B

2. What does the underlined part “just bring yourself” mean?

A. Shelley is a gift

B. Only Shelley can go to the party

C. Shelley have to give a present

D. Shelley doesn’t have to give any presents.

3. Is Shelley fat or thin?

A. Shelley is fat

B. Shelley is thin

C. Shelley is neither fat nor thin

D. The passage doesn’t say

4. Where does the gift which Shelley gave his aunt come from?

A. Shelley bought from the store.

B. Shelley weaved himself.

C. Aunt Gloria gave him.

D. The passage doesn’t say.

5. What’s the best title of the text?

6

A. The Gift of Giving

an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name. When they

arrived on land the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder.

Love

then

found

Knowledge

and

asked,

“Who

was

it

that

helped

me?”

“It

was

Time,”

Knowledge answered. “But why did Time help me when no one else would?” Love asked.

I don’t realize that I’ve been at college for nearly one and h

alf year until now. Looking back

into the last year, what shall I say? It consisted of both happiness and sadness. Life always goes like

this, up and down, as is so exciting. Now when I recall the past, no matter how I felt at that time,

they are all treasures for me.

That

was

the

moon

festival

last

year,

which

was

also

the

first

time

we

went

out

after

we

entered the college. It was said that the sea in Dalian was well-known and was also

a wonderful

place to watch the moon. After getting all the food and drinking ready, we four girls set off for the

seaside.

There

were

many

people

and

we

picked

up

a

less

crowded

beach.

At

first,

we

enjoyed

ourselves by drinking and eating. When the moon turned brighter, we played with the seawater. As a

result, we were all drenched with water. Bathing in the moonlight, we ran and laughed. We seemed

to land on another world, where was full of fresh air, laughter and love. The laughter is still echoing

on my mind so far.

Life

doesn’t

stay

the

same,

occasionally

having

a

partic

ular

taste.

That

is

sadness.

What

impressed

me

deeply

is

a

failure

in

a

singing

competition.

It

was

the

first

time

I

had

given

a

performance on such a large stage in front of so many people. I was so nervous that the whole song

was performed out of tune. As you could imagine, I was greeted with boos from the audience. I still

remembered how dismal I felt that moment and I sat alone crying at the seaside. After that, I talked

to mother about it. She told me that it was not a failure; at least, I was brave enough to show myself

8

publicly.

Everything has passed. I’ve stored them at the bottom of my heart. I am in the second grade

already. Yet much needs me to challenge. On the way, there‘s both happiness and distress. However,

I will go ahead just all the same.

4. How did the audienc

A few years ago men on a ship in the ocean saw the water bubbling and boiling. They went

closer. Night came before they had seen very much. But in the morning they saw an island where

there had been no island before.

It was a very hot island, with smoke, steam, and fire.

Actually, the island was the top of a mountain that had been growing up from the floor of the

ocean and had poked through the water into the air.

How does a mountain grow?

9

If the mountain is a volcano, it is easy to see how it grows. A volcano starts from a hole in the

ground from which hot rock and smoke and steam come out. Far, far under the ground it is so hot

that rock melts. This hot melted rock, or lava, is sometimes pushed out of the earth through a hole

or a crack in the ground. The steam inside the earth pushes the rock out.

As more and more

rock comes out,

it makes

a pile that becomes a mountain. Sometimes

the

rock flows out like hot mush. Sometimes it is shot out in big chunks of hard rock. The more stuff

that comes out, the higher the mountain grows.

If the mountain is growing under the ocean, it becomes an island when it reaches the top of the

water. The little island that the men saw from the ship started this way. So did the big Hawaiian

Islands and the enormous island of Iceland.

Not many

years ago in

Mexico, a little boy and his father discovered a volcano growing in a

cornfield. Smoke puffed up, and rock started popping up out of a crack that opened in the ground.

The

boy

thought

the

cornfield

was

throwing

rocks

at

him!

He

picked

one

up.

It

was

hot.

He

dropped

it

and

ran

away

frightened.

Smoke

and

rock

continued

to

come

from

the

crack

in

the

ground.

A new volcano was being born.

The volcano in the cornfield grew until it was bigger than the cornfield! Black smoke puffed out.

Hot ashes fell like black snowflakes. Hot rock and fire and lava shot out. People called the volcano

the Little Monster because it grew so fast. Scientists came from all over the world to study it and

watch it grow. It is not often that people get a chance to watch a volcano from the very beginning.

1. The underlined word “lava” means

.

A. volcano

B. water

C. melted rock

D. land

2.

pushes the rock out?

A. The hot melted rock

B. The earthquake

C. The smoke

D. The steam inside the earth

3. Which one of the following is different from the other three?

A. the Himalayas

B. the little island

C. the big Hawaiian Islands

D. the enormous island of Iceland

4. Which statement is not right according to the passage?

A. Scientists from every part of the world came to study the new volcano and watch it grow.

B. It is often that people get a chance to watch a volcano from the very beginning.

10

C. Hot ashes fell like black snowflakes.

D. People called the volcano the Little Monster because it grew so fast.

Work is a part of living

my grandparents understood that. They lived and worked on a central

Pennsylvania

farm

that

has

been

in

my

family

for

150

years.

Hess

Farm,

at

that

time,

was

self-sufficient. They raised beef cattle for meat, chickens for eggs and hogs for pork and lard. Dairy

cows were kept for milk and the cream from which Grandma made butter and cheese. What little

yard they had became a garden.

The

Depression,

therefore,

didn’t

a

dramatic

change

in

the

lives.

But

it

did

bring

an

unending flow of men out of work, drifting

(流浪)

from job to job, to the farm. The first man to

show

up

on

the

kitchen

porch

was

ragged-looking,

but

courteous.

He

doffed

his

hat

and

quietly

explained that he hadn’t eaten in a while. Grandpa stood watching him a bit, then said, “There’s a

pile of fir

ewood stacked against the fence behind the barn. I’ve been needing to get it moved to the

other side of the fence. You have just about enough time to finish the job before lunch.” With that,

he stuck out his calloused hand to the stranger.

Grandma said a surprising thing happened. The drifter got a shine in his eyes and, behind the

scrub of his beard, he smiled. He hurried to the barn in a near trot. She set another place at the table

and baked an apple pie. During lunch, the stranger didn’t say much, but w

hen he left, his shoulders

had straightened. “Nothing ruins a man like losing his self

-

respect”, Grandpa later told me.

Soon

after,

another

man

showed

up

asking

for

a

meal.

This

one

was

dressed

in

a

suit

and

carried a small, battered suitcase. Grandpa, who

’d been fixing the hay mower in the toolshed, came

out wiping his hands when he heard voices. He looked at the man and then offered a handshake.

“There’s a stack of firewood along the fence down behind the barn I’ve been meaning to get moved.

It’d sure be a help to me. And we’d be pleased to have you stay for lunch.”

The fellow set his suitcase at the edge of the porch and neatly laid his coat and vest on top.

Then he set off to work.

Grandma says she doesn’t remember how many strangers they shared a meal w

Depression days

Peter's father smiled, but said nothing. Peter would soon see the bridge.

The next morning, his father took Peter to the bridge. Peter first saw it from far away. How big

it looked! But then he saw something else. The bridge was red!

“The bridge isn't golden!” he said. “Why is it called the Golden Gate Bridge?”

“It isn't named for its color,” said his father. “It is named for the Golden Gate.”

“Well,” said Peter, “I still think the bridge should look golden.”

When Peter got home, he sent a letter to a California paper. In the letter he said:” Red is not the

right color for the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge should look golden, the way most people think it

does.”

Peter sent $$14.78 with his letter. It was all the money he had saved. “This money is to help

paint the bridge gold, ” he wrote.

Many people read Peter's letter in the newspaper. Right away, things began to happen! Some

people sent money, A big company gave real gold to make gold paint. A paint company made the

If you go to Plymouth, a small town in the United States of America, you will see there a rock

which runs out into the sea. Many thousands of people

from different parts of the United States

and from many other countries

come to this small town just to see the Rock. They stand there

and think about the brave men and women who, more than three hundred years ago, were standing

on this Rock and looking at the country where they had come to begin a new life.

The year was 1620, in the time of King James the First. The English people did not like their

king and they called him “The Fool King of England”. Many of them left England and went to live

in other countries.

On August 15,1620, a group of Englishmen sailed for America on two vessels, the Speedwell and

the Mayflower. Unfortunately, the Speedwell sprang a leak and had to be abandoned. Leaving 20

persons behind, the remaining travelers

101 in all

crowded on board the 90-foot Mayflower.

For more than two months, the Mayflower was in the waves and storms of the Atlantic Ocean.

15

At last, on November 19, the travellers saw land. It was America.

Autumn was already upon them. It was raining and a cold wind was blowing. Sixteen men left

the Mayflower and went ashore. In the evening, they came back to the ship.

The next day was Sunday and everybody on the Mayflower had a rest. They spent the time in

prayer and thanksgiving. But early on Monday, they landed and camped. While some of the men

During the next five weeks the men from the Mayflower left their camp every day. Sometimes

they did not come back for many days; they were going along the coast and were looking for a good

place to live. Finally, they chose Plymouth as the place to build their colony. It was an ideal location,

with a good harbour, brooks of clear water, and fields cleared by the Indians.

3. How did the English people like their king at that time?

A. They loved their king.

B. They disliked their king.

C. They neither liked nor disliked their king.

Sundays in New York can be very pleasant. That's not to say that Sundays in other American

cities are not pleasant, but New Yorkers feel that their Sundays are special.

Since Saturday nights are traditionally party nights, Sunday morning are traditionally morning

of rest, which means having a long sleep. We call it sleeping in or sleeping late, and staying in bed

until 9,10 or even 11 o'clock is not unusual. Then jump out of bed, hastily pull on clothes, run to the

nearest corner newsstand, buy the

New York Times

or

Daily News

(or both), return home, put some

classical music or popular singer on the record player, take off your clothes and climb right back

into bed to leisurely read the paper.

One of the nicest traditions is breakfast in bed. The Times and News are very fat newspapers

on Sundays so there is a lot to read while one drinks orange juice and coffee, lying in bed.

If the weather is bad you might immediately turn to the Entertainment Section of the paper to

so

Read

the

movie

reviews to discover what the critics think.

No one wants to make an expensive mistake…nor does

anyone want to stand in line a long time which is very possible if the movie is new and gets good

reviews. So if you're not sure about a movie look at the museum listings to see what exhibitions are

in town. Some museums are free, others are not.

But if the weather is good you might glance through the section which lists outdoor activities.

Most of the volcanoes have been here for a very long time. Some have been here so long that

now they are cold. They are called dead volcanoes. They stopped throwing out fire and melted rock

and smoke. It is safe to walk on them. Farms are plowed on the quiet slopes, and people have built

houses there.

Some volcanoes have stopped throwing out hot rock, but they still smoke a little now and then.

They are “sleeping” volcanoes. Sometime they may “wake up.”

A volcano named Vesuvius slept for a thousand years. But it woke up and threw out so much

hot melted rock that it buried the buildings of two cities.

Today volcanoes are not so dangerous for people as they were a long time ago. Now we know

more about why volcanoes do what they do, and we can usually tell when they are going to do it.

Before a sleeping volcano wakes up, it usually makes a noise like faraway thunder, and the ground

shakes in small earthquakes. People are warned and have time to get away safely.

People

used

to

think

dragons

volcanoes.

They

the

ground

was

the

dragon's

breath.

They

said

the

earthquakes

were

caused

by

the

dragon's moving around down in the earth. Now we know that this is not true.

Another

thing

we

know

about

volcanoes

is

that

they

don't

happen

just

anywhere.

There

are

certain places under the earth where the rock is broken in a way that lets the steam and hot rock

escape to the outside more easily. Scientists know where these places are, and maps have been made

to let everybody know.

There are different kinds of volcanoes. Some explode so violently that the rock goes high into

the

air

and

falls

miles

away.

A

volcano

may

shoot

out

ashes

so

high

that

they

float

all

the

way

around the world. They have made the sunsets green and the snow purple.

Other

volcanoes

are

more

gentle.

The

hot

lava

rises

in

their

cones

and

overflows,

rolling

slowly down the mountainside, where it becomes cool and hard.

One very tall volcano stays fiery red at the top all the time . It is lucky that the volcano is near

the ocean. Sailors can use it for a lighthouse.

Which one is true?

A.

A

B.

A lot of dragons under the earth caused volcanoes.

D.

The earthquakes were caused by the dragon’s moving around down in the earth.

A. A dead volcano is dangerous.

enjoyed the Dutch celebrations. They decided to make saint Nicholas part of their own celebration

of Christmas. But he

got

a new name Santa Claus.

It was taken from

the Dutch words

for Saint

Nicholas, Santa Claus. The Dutch imagined Saint Nicholas to be a serious, even frightening person,

who could punish as well as give gifts. But in 1822,an American named Clement C. Moore wrote a

Christmas poem for his children, the poem called A Visit from St. Nicholas, created a completely

little man who rode in an open sleigh. The

sleigh was pulled from house to house by eight white reindeer. At each house Santa delivered gifts

Dr.

Moore's

poem

was

in

a

newspaper in New York, in 1823. It soon became popular all over America and it became the source

for the Santa Claus American children still believe in today.

An American artist named Thomas Nast also played a part in creating Santa Claus. Beginning

in1860's, Mr. Nast drew pictures of Santa Claus for an American publication called Harper's Weekly.

These pictures showed a fat, smiling old

man with a red nose and white beard. He was dressed in

a red suit with white fur and a black belt. Today more than one hundred years later, that same Santa

Claus can be seen everywhere at Christmas time.

During the American War of Independence(1775-1783) and in the first days after the founding

1791.

He

Pierre

L’Enfant,

was John Adams, the second President, who moved the capital to the new seat, which was yet to be

completed. To commemorate George Washington, the new capital was named after him.

During the American Civil War the population of Washington expanded rapidly, as a result of

the stationing of large numbers of federal troops and of the concentration of huge numbers of freed

slaves. An ambitious scheme to rebuild the city started after the Civil War.

Washington is not in any state. It is administratively under the District of Columbia, hence the

letters D.C. after the name of the city. The present-day city of Washington is co-extensive with the

D.C., and the name are synonymous.

In the traditional dating pattern in the United States, much of the responsibility for a date falls

to the young man. In this pattern, the young man must first call the girl he wishes to date on the

telephone.

Usually,

this

call

is

made

quite

early

in

Most

girls

in

traditional

Many

must ask girl for the date, and suggest some things that they might do together. It is usually up to the

young man to pay for all of the evenin

There are many things to do on dates. Many young people enjoy going to sports events, such

Almost everyone enjoys a good movie, and almost every town has at least one movie theater. Young

people may also enjoy going to a night club or coffee house. Here, they may listen to music and

dance, and perhaps meet some of their friends. These are a few of the things young people do on

dates in the United States.

In some parts of the United States, traditional dating relationships begin when young people

are in high school. In other places, young people do not go out in couples until they are in college,

or in their early twenties. Some young men would rather go out with just one girl all of the time.

25

Every Saturday night, a young man will go out with the same girl. Many girls enjoy this kind of

relationship also. It gives both the boy and the girl a chance to get to know one another quite well.

Sometimes, this may lead to marriage. Other young people enjoy dating different individuals

个人)

.

One week they may go out with one person, the next week with another. They get to know many

people this way, and may not wish to have a serious relationship with just one person.

.

A. Wednesday nights

B. Thursday nights

C. Saturday nights

D. Sunday nights

Many young people in the United States, especially college students, do not go out on either of

those traditional dates.

Instead , they

go out

on group dates.

In this kind

of dating pattern, small

groups of young people go out together. All of the people in the group are usually friends, but some

of the people in the group may not know each other. No one young man is with any particular girl.

They are all together as part of the group. This is very different from the traditional date.

A

group

date

differs

from

a

traditional

date

in

several

ways.

First,

there

are

no

special

26

relationships in the group . No particular girl and boy are together all the time. Second, the group

date may occur on a weekend, but it may not be planned in advance. A group of young people may

decide

on

Saturday

afternoon

that

they

want

to

spend

Saturday

evening

together.

They

may

all

decide to go to a movie, or to some other event. On a group date, no one is paired with anyone else.

As a result, every person pays for his or her own expenses. This means that the girls must pay for

themselves. They must pay their own admission

入场费)

for the movies, for a cup of coffee, or for

anything else that costs money during the date.

Many young people find the group date to be a great deal of fun.. The young men on a group

date are under no pressure. They do not have to be with any particular girl during the evening. They

do not have to pay for anyone but themselves. They do not have to be especially polite or formal

during

the

date.

Everyone

can

relax

and

have

a

good

time.

Group

dates

may

lead

to

serious

relationships for some members of the group. Maybe a girl and boy on a group date find that they

have a lot in common and enjoy being together. They may spend more time together, with the group,

and with each other. But usually, everyone on a group date is just interested in a good time. No one

worries about a serious relationship.

1.

Which is not true according to group dates?

A. No one is with any particular girl.

B. Everyone in the group is usually friends.

C. Someone in the group doesn’t know others.

D. They go out in different times.

2. A group date is different from a traditional date in the following ways except

.

A. No one is paired with anyone else.

B. It may not be planned in advance.

C. There are special relationships in the group.

D. Some boy and some girl are together all the while.

3. Which of the following statements is true?

A. The leader of the group pays all the expenses.

B. The boys pay the expenses for the girls.

C. The girls pay the expenses for the boys.

D. The girls pay for themselves.

4. All of the following are advantages of the group date except

.

27

A. They do not have to be especially polite or formal.

B. They do not have to be with any particular girl during the evening.

C. They do not have to pay for anyone else.

D. No one may have serious relationships.

5. Which is the best title of the text?

A. Date

What

You

because

you

would

be

wrong,

or

at

least

inaccurate

in

your

remark.

Ah

yes,

you

might

correct

yourself,

the

Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders speak English too. That is true, but apart

from

that,

what

you

have

in

mind,

say

is

people

in

Britain

or

the

British

speak

English.

The

words

England

and

English

are

perhaps

the

two

most

misused

words

in

the

English

language. The English themselves

I beg your pardon, I am making the same mistake! The British

themselves often say England and English when they really mean Britain and British. The Chinese

words “

英国

” is even more misused than not because the term “

不列颠

” is ha

rdly ever used.

What’s the difference, you may ask. To understand the question we have to know something

about the history of the country and its people.

Before there was a country there were the people. And before there were people, there was land.

So let us start off from here and take the land first.

We all know that Britain (though we often say England by force of habit) is an island country

separated from the European continent by the English Channel. Actually there are two main islands.

The larger one is called Britain, or Great Britain, and the smaller one is called Ireland, and these two,

together with many small islands make up what is called the British Isles.

The British Isles is a geographical term. It is not the name of any country. At present it is made

up of two countries, the larger of which is the one we very often inaccurately call England. The full

official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but people call it Britain

or Great Britain for that. It consists of England, Scotland, Wales and a small part(about one-sixth) of

28

Ireland, the northeastern part.

People still tend to call Britain England not only because England is the largest in area and the

most populous but mostly because England is the strongest and also the most influential country in

every respect

before it absorbed the other three countries(The whole of

Ireland was

a part of the

United Kingdom at one time). Call it national chauvinism if you like, but people in England call

Britain England out of habit rather than conscious sense of superiority, though it annoys the Welsh

and especially the Scots who are proud of their separate national tradition.

1. According to the passage the correct order of the following terms is

.

A. land, people, country

B. land, country, people

C. people, land, country

D. country, people, land

2. The British Isles is made up of

.

A. one country

B. two countries

C. two and a half countries

D. three countries

3. The full official name of Britain is

.

A. Great Britain

B. England

C. United Kingdom

D. the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

4. People call Britain England because of all of the following except

.

A. England is the largest in area and has the largest population.

B. people in England do so out of habit.

C. England is the nearest to the European continent.

D. England is the strongest and also the most influential in every respect.

5. Britain is separated from the European continent by

.

A. several islands

B. Northern Ireland

C. the English Channel

D. the Atlantic Ocean

25,000 March for King

More than 25,000 black Americans declared their own holiday in Washington yesterday.

Led

by

the

they

reported

for

a

rally

(集会)

at

the

Washington Monument, instead of work or school, in a national call to make the late Rev. Martin

29

Luther King’s birth a legal holiday.

The occasion was high-

spirited, with the slain civil rights leader’s son, Martin Luther King

,

delivering stirring oratory in his father’s name.

“My

a

speech

‘How

long,

Lord?’And

the

answer

would

be‘Not

long,’” said King. “Now I’m asking, how long,

Lord, will it be before we get a holiday? Not long.

No lie can live forever.”

The crowd erupted with applause. On stage, civil rights activists

Ben Chavis, Dick Gregory

Mayor

Marion

Barry

among

them

nodded

and

stroked

their

chins

while

whispering,

largest

gathering

of

blacks

in

Washington

since

African

Liberation

Day

in

1977.

Estimates on crowd size, however, varied dramatically, with U.S. Park Police claiming there were

15,000 participants. Other observers said the crowd numbered at least 25,000 but not the 200,000

claimed by the event’s sponsors.

Activist-comedian Gregory, predicting disagreement on the crowd size, drew applause when he

looked out over the Monument grounds and said there were “goo gobs

A university is much larger than a college. It is larger for two reasons. First, a university in the

United

States

usually

has

several

different

colleges

in

it.

Each

college

within

a

university

has

a

special subject area. There may be a college of liberal arts where humanities, social science, natural

science, and mathematics are taught. There may be a college of education where students learn to be

teachers.

There

may

be

a

college

of

business

where

business

subjects

are

taught.

All

of

these

colleges may be part of one university. So

metimes, in a university, each college is called a “school”:

“The School of Liberal Arts”, “The School of Business” or “The School of education”. Second, a

university always has programs for advanced or graduate study in a variety of subjects. There may

be a medical school, a law school, and other advanced programs.

Students in the United States must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, to enter one of

the

colleges

in

a

university.

Most

students

have

completed

regular

high

school

programs.

Some

older students may have the same amount of education even though they have not completed high

school. These students have the equivalent of a high school degree. University students may study

for an undergraduate degree in the arts or sciences. If they complete a course of study in the arts,

they receive Bachelor of Arts degrees. In the sciences, they receive B.S. degree. Students may leave

university at this time, or they may choose to go on for a graduate or professional degree.

A

university

may

get

money

for

its

expenses

from

several

different

sources.

It

may

get

some

money from the state government. If so, it is a publicly funded university. It may get money only

from private sources: contributions, tuition (fee for teaching), investments, and other sources. If this

is

the case, it is

a privately funded university.

Finally,

a university may

be funded by a religious

group.

A university program for undergraduates usually takes four years. In this way, a university and a

college

are

alike.

College

students

usually

spend

four

years

in

school

also.

A

college,

however,

usually has only one or two kinds of programs. A college does not have graduate or professional

programs in a variety of areas.

31

A college is also like a university in the kinds of students it has. College students, like university

students, usually have a high school diploma when they enter college. If a college student completes

a

course

of

study

in

the

arts,

he

or

she

receives

a

Bachelor

of

Arts

degree.

In

the

sciences,

the

students receive a Bachelor of Science degree. If college students want to continue for a graduate or

professional degree, they must go to a university.

1. The first paragraph mainly talks about

.

A. the universities of the United States

B. the colleges of the United States

C. the reasons why a university has so many colleges

D. the reasons why a university is much larger than a college

2. If one wants to enter a university he must

.

A. have a high school diploma

B. have the equivalent of a high school degree

C. both A and B

D. either A or B

3. If the students receive bachelor of science degrees, they may

.

A. leave the university at this time

B. go on for a graduate degree

C. go on for a professional degree

D. either A or B and C

4. How many ways are the universities funded in ?

A. one

B. two

C. three

D. four

5. The last two paragraphs mainly talk about

.

A. the similarity of a university and a college

B. the differences between a university and a college

C. both the similarity and the differences of a university and a college

D. neither the similarity nor the differences of a university and a college

A Babysitting Pool

Thanks to the babysitting pool, little Tommy’s mother doesn’t have to worry about not being able

to find a babysitter at the last moment any more. She can always depend upon it for help.

32

Since it was founded a year ago, the babysitting pool has become increasingly popular among the

residents on the North Campus of the University of Michigan. More and more mothers have joined

it and have benefited from it. What attracts them most is the idea that you pay your babysitter not in

cash, but in paper cards. When you join the babysitting pool, you are given thirty cards, which are

worth 30-minute babysitting time each. At a time when the cost of child care is high, these paper

cards are just as good as the real money. When you want to go out by yourself, leaving the child at

home, all you need to do is to call up someone on the babysitting-pool list and ask if she is willing

to babysit for you. You can either take your child to her home or have her come over to your place.

For

each

half

an

hour

while

you

are

gone,

the

babysitter

gets

paid

one

card.

These

are

rules

regulating this service. You should watch no more than three kids at a time, including your own. On

big

holidays

such

as

Christmas

and

Thanksgiving,

the

babysitter

should

be

paid

twice

as

much,

which means two cards for every half an hour. When you leave the babysitting-pool,

you should

return all the cards. If you are out of cards, you cannot use money instead. You have to babysit for

others to earn enough cards so that you will have them handy when you yourself need a babysitter.

The advantage this mutual- babysitting service has over other kinds of babysitting is that it keeps

children in constant touch with one another, and makes life easier for the mothers. Since in most

cases the babysitter is the mother who watches others’ kids at her own home, it is still possible for

her to do her own things while the kids play with each other. In fact most mother babysitters find

that their own kids are less of a monster and easier to watch when they are around other playmates.

Moreover, since the babysitting pool service does not involve money, it will not be a drain on the

financial situation of the family. There is always a certain time of the week when you do not plan on

doing

anything important.

So

you

can babysit in exchange

for some time later when

you want

a

moment of peace to do things undisturbed.

In the past

year the babysitting pool has helped so many mothers with their work that they all

think that it is indeed a good community service worth keeping.

1. One can watch

kids at the most at a time.

A. one

B. two

C. three

D. four

2. At Christmas the babysitter gets

card(s) for each half an hour.

A. one

B. two

C. three

D. four

3. If you have no more cards, you can

.

A. use money instead.

B. borrow some from others.

33

C. apply for some.

D. babysit for others to earn some.

4. The babysitters are mostly

.

A. fathers

B. mothers

C. both fathers and mothers

D. neither fathers nor mothers

5. Which of the following is not the advantage of the babysitting service?

A. It keeps children in constant touch with one another.

B. It makes life easier for the mothers.

C. It is possible for the mother to do her own things while she watches others’ kids at her own

home.

D. It makes the family cost a lot.

If

you flew in

an airplane over the continent of Antarctica,

you would

look

down on a

great

sheet of snow and ice. The snow and ice slopes gently from a central plateau around the South Pole

toward the sea. Along the coasts of Antarctica, sharp mountains rise up from the snow. Huge masses

of

ice

called

glaciers

slide

between

the

mountain

ridges

toward

the

sea.

At

the

sea's

edge,

tremendous icebergs break of the glacier and float away. They are often enormous in size.

Beneath the snow and ice of Antarctica lies land. Snow piles deeper and deeper on top of the

land and hardens into ice. In some places, it is three miles deep. Most of the land beneath the snow

is a great land mass. A chain of smaller islands is nearby. The islands and the land mass are joined

into one continent by a thick blanket of ice.

Antarctica has nine-tenths of all the world's ice. If all this ice melted, the level of the world's

oceans would rise 250 feet. Most cities along the coast would be drowned. In New York Harbor,

water would almost cover the Statue of Liberty's head. But the ice in Antarctica does not melt. The

temperature stays well below freezing the year round in most places. Antarctica is the coldest place

on Earth. The temperature there has been known to drop to more than 100 degrees below zero.

Antarctica does not have much plant life. Only a few simple plants, such as mosses, lichens, and

algae,

can

grow

there.

The

climate

is

so

harsh,

and

food

so

scarce,

that

people

cannot

settle

in

Antarctica. But along the coasts of the continent there are many birds, fish, and animals.

Thousands of whales and millions of seals swim in Antarctic seas. Six kinds of seals are found.

34

The fur seal, the smallest, has long been hunted for its silky fur. The tough-skinned elephant seal is

the largest. It can weigh as much as four tons.

Most of the world's whaling takes place in Antarctic waters. The blue whale is the largest animal

that has ever lived. It may weigh as much as 150 tons and be 95 feet long. Smaller whales include

the bottlenose, the humpback, the sperm, and the finback.

1. If there were 10,000 tons of ice in all the world over, there would be

tons in Antarctica.

A. 90

B. 900

C. 9,000

D. 90,0000

2. The ice in Antarctica is

deep at the most.

A. 95 feet

B. 150 feet

C. 250 feet

D. 3 miles

3. Which of the following statements is true?

A. The level of the world’s oceans would rise 250 feet.

B. Most cities along the coast would be drowned.

C. In New York Harbor, water would almost cover the Statue of Liberty’s head.

D. The ice in Antarctica does not melt.

4. All of the following statements are true except

.

A. The largest seal can weigh as much as four tons.

B. The weight of the blue whale may reach 150 tons.

C. Sometimes the temperature in Antarctica falls to over 100

below zero.

D. The bottlenose is a smaller whale.

5. The reason why the fur seal is hunted is that

B. Its silky fur is valuable.

C. It is easy to hunt.

D. It is brave.

Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out

as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised

just how different they can be from your own.

A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the

in

India,

agreement or acceptance. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you

thirty. In th

at country you shake your head to signify “yes”

---

a nod indicates “no”. Arabs are known

for their sumptuous hospitality. At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that

any drinking vessel is repeatedly refilled as soon as you drain it. The way to indicate that you have

had enough is to take the cup or glass in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or

In

Attitudes to women vary considerably around the world. In Japan, for example, it is quite usual

for men to plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home.

Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when

The oases are the only really bright spots in the Sahara Desert. Here and there, a deep spring or

well brings water to a small piece of ground. In such place, the grass is green and plants grow very

well. The people who live in the desert are called nomads. They make their living by keeping herds

of camels, goats, or sheep. These animals eat the coarse grass of shrubs that grow on oases. This

grass doesn't last long. When it is all eaten, the nomads and their families travel on until they can

find another spot that has food for their animals. They keep moving over the desert from place to

place. The nomads live in tents. For clothing the nomad wears a loose woolen robe. On his head he

wears a round wool cap, and over this a bright handkerchief. He usually wears camelhide sandals to

protect

his

feet

from

the

hot

sand.

These

people

eat

mostly

dates,

camel's

milk,

cheese,

and

sometimes coarse bread.

For many years the camel has been the chief means of travel across the desert. He can go

for

many days without drinking or eating. He keeps most of his water because he does not lose it by

sweating it out.

The camel can draw upon fat stored in his hump for food. He has a pad on the bottom of each

broad foot that keeps him from sinking into the deep sand. Although donkeys are also used in the

desert, the camel has always been the favorite of the desert traveler.

Compared

to

universities

and

colleges,

community

colleges

in

the

United

States

are

quite

different.

The

programs

of

study

in

the

community

college

usually

last

only

two

years.

Many

different subjects are taught in the community college. But not all subjects. Not all of the subjects

are

taught

in

the

community

college.

Not

all

of

the

subjects

are

the

usual

school

subjects.

The

community college may give courses in dental (of the teeth) technology, auto mechanics, sewing,

and many other nonacademic subjects. The community college may also have courses in the regular

academic subjects like science, math, languages, literature, and other courses in the humanities.

Many

different

types

of

students

study

at

community

colleges.

Not

all

students

have

a

high

school diploma. Many students are adults with children, and sometimes with grandchildren, of their

own. The community college serves the community, and anyone who lives nearby may go. When

community

college

students

complete

a

two- year

program,

they

receive

an

associate

of

arts

or

associate of science degree. They may then go to a college or university for two more years to get

the bachelor’s degree. However, the student may get a job instead, or just stop going to sch

Community

colleges

are

nearly

always

publicly

funded,

by

the

state,

country,

government. They are not usually funded by religious groups.

The community college gives training for a variety of jobs, and also has an academic program.

39

The technical or vocational school, however, has only job training. Its programs may last a short

time or a long time. Some programs take six months, while other programs may take two years or

more to complete.

Most of the little girls in the school near Gates Avenue wore pretty new clothes that spring. But

the

little

girl

from

Gates

Avenue

wore

the

same

dirty

dress

that

she

had

worn

all

winter.

It

was

probably the only dress she owned.

Her

teacher

sighed.

The

little

girl

was

so

nice!

She

she

One

the

teacher

said,

“Will

you

wash

your

face

before

you

come

to

scho

ol

tomorrow

morning? Please do that for me.” The teacher could see that the girl was pretty under the dirt.

The next morning the child’s pretty face had been washed. Her hair was clean and tidy, too.

Before the little girl went home that afternoon, the tea

cher said, “Now dear, please ask your mother

to wash your dress.”

But the little girl continued to wear the dirty dress. “Her mother is probably not interested in

her,” the teacher thought. So she bought a bright blue dress and gave it to the little girl.

The child

took the present eagerly and hurried home as fast as she could.

The next morning she came to school in the new blue dress, and she was clean and tidy. She

told the teacher, “My mother was surprised when she saw me this morning in my new dress. My

father wasn’t at home; he had gone to work. But he will see me at supper this evening.”

When her father saw her in the new blue dress, he was surprised to find that he had a pretty

little girl. When the family sat down to eat supper, he was even more surprised to find a cloth on the

table. The family had never used a tablecloth before. “What is the cloth for?” he asked.

“We’re going to be more tidy here,” his wife said. “It isn’t nice to have a house that is dirty and

untidy when our daughter is so clean.”

After

supper

the

mother

the

There is almost no gun control in the United States. Almost anybody can buy and carry a gun,

without having to register with the police. And guns are cheap. For as little as

5.00 you can buy a

“Saturday Night Special”. This little gun got its name because more murders happen on Saturday

night

than

at

any

other

time.

Because

it

is

so

easy

to

get

a

gun,

there

are

more

than

40

million

handguns in the United States. This number is increasing by 2.5 million every year. Some of these

guns

will

protect

businessmen

from

being

robbed.

But

others

will

have

killed

over

10,000

Americans this year.

In

the

cities,

more

and

more

crimes

are

committed

with

guns.

People

are

frightened

and

worried.

They

are

asking

for

more

government

control

of

guns.

The

House

of

Representatives

Sub- committee on Crime is looking at more than a hundred and fifty bills to control guns. Probably,

none of these bills will become law.

There

are

a

number

of

reasons

for

this.

Americans

have

always

been

allowed

to

own

guns.

When the country was young, guns were necessary tools. The first settlers had to hunt for their food

and protect themselves from Red Indian’s attacks. They also had to protect themselves from thieves

and killers;

there was no police force in the “Wild West”. America grew up with guns, and now it

42

seems that it will also die with guns, but many people want to keep them. Guns are important to

many Americans. They do not want laws to stop them from owning guns. They do not even want

gun-owners to have to register their names with the police. They say that laws like this limit their

freedom too much.

Many citizens belong to hunting clubs and shooting clubs. They use their guns for sport and

target practice. The National Rifle Association has over a million members. This organization does

not

want

any

laws

passed

against

guns

of

any

kind.

Many

members

of

the

Association

are

bank

presidents and top executives in big companies. They have a lot of money, power and influence in

Washington. They have stopped a lot of laws even against handguns. This is a strange attitude for a

sporting club. As Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago says

“You don’t see someone shooting rabbits with a handgun. The only thing you hunt is human

beings.”

1. Saturday Night Special is

.

A. the name of a night club.

B. the name of an evening school

C. the name of an animal.

D. the name of a little gun.

2. If there were 40 million handguns in 1980, there would be

handguns the next year.

A. 4,250,000

B. 40,000,000

C. 42,500,000

D. 420,500,000

3. Which is NOT the reason why Americans are allowed to own guns?

A. The country was young.

B. The first settlers had to hunt for their food.

C. They had to protect themselves from Red Indian’s attack.

D. They had to protect themselves from thieves and killers.

4. They use a handgun to

.

A. shoot rabbits

B. shoot other people

C. practice shooting

D. shoot the enemy in

the war

5. There is no law to control guns. The reason is probably that

.

A. Many presidents are against the law.

B. Guns cost a lot of money.

C. Guns have much power.

43

D. Some important people stopped a lot of laws against handguns.

Economists know that places where transportation lines meet are good places for making raw

materials

into

finished

goods.

That

is

why

seaports

often

have

cities

nearby.

But

cities

like

New

York needed more than their geographical location in order to become great industrial centers. Their

development did not happen simply by chance.

About 1815

when many Americans from the east coast had already moved toward the west

trade routes from the ports to the central regions of the country began to be a serious problem. The

slow wagons of that time

drawn by horses or oxen

were too expensive for moving heavy freight

very far. Americans had long admired Europe's canals. In New York State a canal seemed the best

solution

to

the

transportation

problem.

From

the

eastern

end

of

Lake

Erie

all

the

way

across

the

state to the Hudson River there is a long strip of low land. Here the Erie Canal was constructed.

After several years of work it was completed in 1825.

The canal produced an immediate effect. Freight costs were cut to about one-tenth of what had

been. New York City

which had been smaller than Philadelphia and Boston

quickly became the

leading city of the coast. In the years that followed

transportation routes on the Great Lakes were

joined

to

routes

on

the

Mississippi

River.

Then

New

York

City

became

the

end

point

of

a

great

inland shipping system that extended from the Atlantic Ocean far up the western branches of the

Mississippi.

The coming of the railroads made canal shipping less important

but it tied New York even

more closely to the central regions of the country. It was easier for people in the central states to

ship their goods to New York for export overseas.

Exports from New York were greater than imports. Consequently

shipping companies were

eager to fill their ships with passengers on the return trip from Europe. Passengers could come from

Europe very cheaply as a result.

Thus New York became the greatest port for receiving people from European countries. Many

of these people remained in the city. Others stayed in New York for a few weeks

months

or years

and then moved to other parts of the United States. For these great number of new Americans New

York had to provide homes

goods

and services. Their labor helped the city become great.

1. Why do seaports often have cities nearby?

A. Because raw materials can be made into finished goods there.

B. Because seaports need their geographical location.

D. cheap

4. It was easier for people in the central states to ship their goods to New York for export overseas

because of

.

A. the wagons

B. the ships

C. the Erie Canal

D. the trains

A. Many of the people from European countries remained there.

B.

Other

European

people

stayed

there

for

some

Washington

,

April 14, 1865

. Washington was thrown into an intence excitement a few minutes

before eleven o’clock this evening, by the announcement that the President and Secretary Seward

Mrs.

Lincoln

to it, “The South is avenged,” and then

escaped from the back entrance to the stage, but in his passage dropped his pistol and his hat.

Mr. Lincoln fell forward from his seat, and Mrs. Lincoln fainted.

plan. The person who

fired the pistol was a man about thirty years of age, about five feet nine, spare built, fair skin, dark

hair, apparently bushy, with a large moustache. Laura Keene and the leader of the orchestra declared

that they recognized him as J. Wilkes Booth the actor, and a rabid secessionist. Whoever he was, it

Dear Ann Landers,

I have never been so burned up in all my life. That poor youngster was scared half out of his

wits. When I came to get him, he was sobbing and shaking like a leaf. You’d have thought that he

had stabbed the cashier and held the manager at gun point.

I think it is just dreadful that an 11-year-old boy should be made to feel like a criminal over a

measly 39-cent pen.

Please tell me what can be done about sadistic store managers who would treat a small child

like that. This incident might cause permanent psychic damage to my son.

The Quarrel of the Quails

Once upon a time many quails

(鹌鹑)

lived together in a forest. The wisest of them all was

their leader.

A man lived near the forest and earned his living by catching quails and selling them. Day after

day he listened to the note of the leader calling the quails. By and by this man, the fowler, was able

to call the quails together. Hearing the note the quails thought it was their leader who called.

When they were crowded together, the fowler threw his net over them and off he went into the

town, where he soon sold all the quails that he had caught.

The wise leader saw the plan of the fowler for catching the quails. He called the birds to him

and said, “This fowler is carrying away so many of us, we must put a stop to it. I have thought of a

plan; it is

this: The next time the fowler throws a net

over

you, each

of you must put

your head

through

one

of

the

little

holes

in

the

net.

Then

all

of

you

together

must

fly

away

to

the

nearest

thorn-bush. You can leave the net on the thorn-

bush and be free yourselves.”

The quails said that was a very good plan and they would try it the next time the fowler threw

the net over them.

The very next day the fowler came and called them together. Then he threw the net over them.

The quails lifted the net and flew away with it to the nearest thorn-bush where they left it. They

flew back to their leader to tell him how well his plan had worked.

The

fowler

was

busy

until

evening

getting

his

net

off

the

thorns

and

he

went

home

49

empty-handed. The next day the same thing happened, and the next. His wife was angry because he

did not bring

home any money, but the fowler said, “The fact is those quails are working together

now. The moment my net is over them, off they fly with it, leaving it on a thorn-bush. As soon as

the quails begin to quarrel I shall be able to catch them.”

Not long after this, one of the quails in alighting on their feeding ground, trod by accident on

another’s

head.

“Who

trod

on

my

head?”

angrily

cried

the

second.

“I

did;

but

I

didn’t

mean

to.

Don’t be angry,” said the first quail, but the second quail was angry and said

mean things.

Soon all the quails had taken sides in this quarrel. When the fowler came that day he flung his

net over them, and this time instead of flying off with it, one side said, “Now, you lift the net,” and

the other side said, “Lift it yourself.”

“You try to make us lift it all,” said the quails on one side. “No, we don’t!” said the others,

“you begin and we will help,” but neither side began.

So the quails quarreled, and while they were quarreling the fowler caught them all in his net.

He took them to town and sold them for a good price.

1. The

of all the quails was their leader.

A. most beautiful

B. strongest

C. biggest

D. wisest

2. Why was the man able to call the quails together?

A. Because he was very clever.

B. Because he had the skill from birth.
