Unit one
Main idea:
In this text,
the author gives us a vivid description of how his
attitude towards writing changed
through his own experience. As a high
school student, he was long bored by everything
associated
with English courses,
including essay writing. When Mr. Fleagle was
assigned to teach his class
English and
asked them write an essay, the topic
“
The art of eating
spaghetti
”
attracted him and
he
wrote
about
it
for
his
own
joy.
The
composition
turned
out
to
be
a
great
success
and
this
experience helped him discover his
talent for writing and know what he wished to do
in life. By
telling his own story, the
author reveals that the essence of good essays is
to write what one enjoys
writing about.
