Unit one


Main idea:





In this text, the author gives us a vivid description of how his attitude towards writing changed


through his own experience. As a high school student, he was long bored by everything associated


with English courses, including essay writing. When Mr. Fleagle was assigned to teach his class


English and asked them write an essay, the topic

attracted him and he


wrote

joy.


The


composition

out


to


be


a


great


success


and


this


experience helped him discover his talent for writing and know what he wished to do in life. By


telling his own story, the author reveals that the essence of good essays is to write what one enjoys


writing about.



Language Points


1. off and on (or on and off): from time to time, now and again, irregularly
