Abstract:

George

Herbert's

poem,

conveys

to

us

a

theme

that

all

material

things in this world, however shiny they are on the outside, are flashy on the inside;

only

the

spiritual

sublime

virtues

that

human

beings

possess

remain

fresh

forever.

This paper analyzes the poem

of “

Virtue

”

through the poetic form, theme, figures of

speech, import influences and the expression of the poetic theme is realized through

the overall layout of cohesion of this poem, manifested in rhyme scheme, lexicon, and

structure.

Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright,

The bridal of the earth and sky:

The dew shall weep thy fall tonight;

For thou must die.

Sweet rose, whose hue, angry and brave,

Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye:

Thy root is ever in its grave,

And thou must die.

Sweet spring, full of sweet days and roses,

A box where sweets compacted lie;

My music shows ye have your closes,

And all must die.
