The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
(蓝宝石案)
【旁白】
:
The
story
began
two
days
after
Christmas
when
Dr.
John
Watson
arrived at Baker Street to find his friend, the
famous detective,
Sherlock Holmes,
carefully examining a hat.
【
Watson
】
:”I say, Holmes,
Season’s Greetings and all that sort of
thing.”
【
Holmes
p>
】
:”Ah, Watson, yes, and a
Merry Christmas to u also, my old
friend.”
【
Watson
】
:”Oh, I beg ur
pardon. I did not mean to interrupt u. u seem
to be here carefully inspecting that
hat. Is it the key to some terrifying
crime, blackmail perhaps?”
<
/p>
【
Holmes
】
:”no, no, my old friend. It has no meaning as
d
eep as all that.
Actually
it has to do with a missing Christmas
goose.
”
【
< br>Watson
】
:”a
missing…
uh…
this
is
a
different
kind
of
case
for
u,
Holmes.”
【
Holmes
】
:”I
must
say
that
it
is.
Now
u
remember
the
police
commissioner,
Peterson. He was walking on Goodge Street 4 days
ago,
which is to say, 2 days before
Christmas. He looked up ahead and saw a
stranger,
a
tall
man
wearing
this
hat,
and
the
man
was
suddenly
attacked by a gang of street ruffians.
Now, Peterson rushed forward,
of
course,
to
help.
But
before
he
could
even
blow
his
policeman’s
whistle,
the
stranger
raised
his
walking
stick
to
defend
himself.
Unfortunately, he
raised it a bit too far and shattered a shop
window
behind
him.
And
just
then,
Peterson
blew
his
whistle.
The
street
ruffians ran away,
and the stranger, apparently feeling guilty to
having
broken
the
window,
turned
and
ran
the
other
way.
He
dropped
his
hat
—
and a
Christmas goose
—
in the
process. And by the time Peterson
had
reached the corner, everyone was gone. Well, he
brought the hat
to me. The goose was
quite a fine bird. There was one clue for there
was a card attached to the goose’s leg,
saying ‘For Mrs. Henry Baker’.
And the
hat band here has written upon it the initials
H.B.
”
【
Watson
】
:”why, surely that
would be enough to help u find this Henry
Baker.”
【
< br>Holmes
】
:”I’m afraid not,
Watson. There are several hundred Henry
Bakers
in
London
and
geese
do
not
last
long
enough
for
us
to
go
through
this many names. And so I was trying to determine
from the hat
itself if I could narrow
down which Henry Baker it might be.”
【旁白】
:”just then, the door
opened and in rushed Peterson, the police
agent who had found the hat and the
goose.”
【
Peterson
】
:”Mr. Holmes!”
(兴奋地)
【
Holmes
】
:”Peterson, my good
fellow! Come in, but what is wrong?”
p>
【
Peterson
】
:”there’s noting wrong, but look what we found when we
cut open the Christmas goose.
It’s… it’s a jewel!”
【旁白】
:”carefully examining
the fabulous blue stone which Peterson
held out to him,
Holmes
replied.”
【
Holmes
】
:”to be precise, Peterson,
it is not a jewel, this is the jewel.”
【
Peterson
】
:”what!
Do
u
mean
the
Countess
of
Morcar’s
blue
carbuncle?”
【
Holmes
】
:”very
good,
Watson.
The
blue
carbuncle
that
was
stolen
from
the
hotel
room
of
the
Countess
of
Morcar
several
days
ago.
I
congratulate u, Peterson. She has
offered a reward of one-thousand
pounds.”
【
Peterson
】
:”A th…a…a
thousand pounds!”
【旁白】
the astonished Peterson
say down abruptly. Consulting his files,
Holmes then explained about the theft
of the jewel from the Countess
of
Morcar’s hotel room.
【
Holmes
】
a plumber, one
John Horner, has been arrested. This fellow,
Horner, had previously been convicted
of robbery on another occasion.
Apparently, according to James Ryder, a
room attendant at the Hotel
Cosmopolitan,
Horner
was
called
in
to
fix
a
broken
grate
in
the
Countess
of
Morcar’s
room.
Ryder
was
with
him
for
some
time
and
then
was
called
away.
When
he
returned,
Horner
was
gone,
the
Countess’ dresser had
been broken into, the jewel case was
ly
ing on top,
empty, the
blue carbuncle was missing. And this fellow
Ryder’s evidence
was confirmed by the
Countess’ maid, Catherine Cusack. At any rate,
the
plumber,
John
Horner,
was
subsequently
found
and
arrested,
although he protested his innocence.
【旁白】
then, Holmes looking up
from his notes, said
【
Holmes
】
um… now, Watson, our little
exercise with the hat becomes
more
serious.
Here
is
the
blue
carbuncle,
the
stone
came
from
the
goose, the goose came
from Mr. Henry Baker, the fellow whose hat this
is. We must find the gentleman.
Peterson, I should like u to place an ad
in the evening papers, plz.
【旁白】
Holmes
drawing
forth
a
pen
and
a
sheet
of
paper,
began
to
write
:”Found at the corner of Goodge Street a goose and
a black felt
hat.
Mr.
Henry
Baker
can
retrieve
same
at
6:30
this
evening
at
221B
Baker
Street. ”
【
Holmes
】
There!
【旁白】
then Holmes sent
Peterson off with the advertisement while he
himself, much to Watson’s confusion, he
went out to buy another goose.
Later,
Holmes and Watson waited hopefully for Henry Baker
to appear
in answer to the ad. At
precisely 6:30, the door opened. Holmes looked
up at the tall gentleman standing in
his doorway and said.
【
Holme
s
】
Mr. Henry Baker, I
presume.
【旁白】
the stranger,
who seemed rather ill at ease, replied
【
Baker1
】
Uh,
yes.
Uh,
yes.
I
came
about
ur
advertisement
in
the
‘
Evening
Standard
’. I’ve come for my hat and the
Christmas goose.
【
Holmes
】
yes. well, here is
ur
hat, sir. As for the goose, I’ve
some rather
unfortunate news. The goose
would not keep and therefore we have
eaten it.
【
Baker1
】
what, u’ve…
【
Holmes
】
do
n't worry, sir. I’ve preserved for u its beak, and
feathers
and other parts. They’re ober
there in a bag
on my mantelpiece.
【旁白】
in answer to the clear
disappointment on Baker’s face, Holmes
added
【
Holmes
】
and, if u prefer, we have a new
bird for u, instead.
【
Baker1
】
well,
I
certainly
have
no
sentimental
attachment
to
the
insides of
the goose u ate. I gladly take this other one,
sir. Thank u for
ur trouble. May I, may
I repay u in any way?
【
Holme
s
】
oh
no.
oh
no,
Mr.
Baker,
u
have
repaid
me
sufficiently.
Thank u.
【旁白】
then,
getting
to
the
point
in
which
he
was
really
interested,
Holmes
asked
Baker
where
he
had
gotten
the
original
goose.
Baker
replied he belonged to a club whose
members gave a little money each
month
to the owner of a tavern called the Alpha Inn. At
the end of the
year, each member of the
club received a fine bird to eat. Then Baker
again
thanked
Holmes
and
Watson
and
he
left,
wishing
them
both
a
merry Christmas.
Afterwards, Holmes remarked to Watson.
【
Holmes
】
it is
obvious to me that Mr. Henry Baker knew nothing of
the
blue
carbuncle
being
inside
the
first
bird.
As
he
would
have
wanted
what was left of that
creature. But now, let us go to the Alpha Inn at
once and follow the trail.
【旁白】
but the owner of the
Alpha Inn only directed them again to the
salesman from whom he had bought the
birds in the first place, a fellow
named Breckinridge who had a stall in
the famous open-air market at.
Holmes
and Watch approached him.

Holmes
】
excuse me,
sir, are u Mr. Breckinridge?
【旁白】
the wiry, little fellow
pushed his Derby hat back on his head and
looked up at the two friends
【
Breckinridge
】
I’
m Mr. Breckinridge, yes.
【
p>
Holmes
】
and u sell
geese?
【
Breckinridge
< br>】
I’m
the
one
that
sells
the
geese,
yes.
Finest
birds
in
all
—a London I’ve got
here.
【
Holmes
】
well,
sir,
perhaps
u
could
tell
us.
We
have
a
friend
who
obtained a goose from u
through the A
lpha…
【
Breckinridge
】
A
lpha Inn! Get out of here! I’m sick and tired of
people
asking me about them birds from
the Alpha Inn. If it’s not one fellow,
it’s another fellow. Now, be gone, be
gone, both of u. I’ll have nothing
to
do with u.
【
Holmes
】
excuse me, si
r, I
certainly didn't mean to trouble u. I guess I’ll
lost my bet.
