Three
months ago, I
went into Best Buy
looking for
a fridge.
We
knew roughly what
we
wanted,
but online, we
couldn't get a feel for something that big. So my
wife and I went to the bricks
and
mortar(
灰浆
)
home
electronic
giant,
only
to
stand
there
puzzled
looking
at
exactlyone
fridge.
The
clerk
cheerily
told
us,
don't
have
any
for
you
to
actually
look
at,
but
you
can
look
through
a huge selection right here on this
computer.
We were preparing for our
first child, so we'd been doing
lots of
shopping. But
as the weeks
went by, I walked into many a store to
get the same response :
we'll happily
mail it to you. No, we don't carry it, but you can
order it online.
Shopping online is
of great convenience. But not too long ago online
stores were not used
to buy everyday
essentials. I want to look at the side of a fridge
and notice that. it's black.
Most of
all, I want instant satisfaction. When I buy
something, I want it now, not in the 7-14
days it takes to order, get it out of
the warehouse and ship it to my house.
Online stores make sense. Bricks and mortar are
expensive, so. keeping everything in stock
in every store is impractical. The
Internet is about making life easy and fast.
That's the way
it
is
when
you
buy
an
e-book
or
a
mobile
application.
But
as
the
Internet
begins
to
have
an
effect
on
other products, I'm backing down.
It turns out that I don't want the Internet to
replace stores. In fact, I want bricks and
mortar
stores with lots
of boxes. Right now, there's nothing I
want more than to
be able to fill
a big box in the back of my car, take
it home, open it up and enjoy what's in it the
same day
I
- 3 -
buy it.
25. What did the
writer do when he was in Best Buy?
A. He looked through all kinds of fridges.
B. He managed to buy a fridge
online.
C. He was satisfied with
the clerk's service.
D. He felt
disappointed not to see the fridge he wanted.
26. What do
A. Online
stores.
B. Traditional stores.
C. Stores offering building
materials.
D. Stores offering cheap
products.
27. Which of the following
may the author buy online?
A. A
washing machine. B. A CD player.
C. A
fridge. D. An e-dictionary.
28. What can we learn from the last
paragraph?
A.. The writer hopes
that online stores will be closed.
B. The writer likes the feeling of buying and
carrying goods.
C. The writer
prefers online stores to bricks and mortar stores.
D. The writer wishes bricks and
mortar stores would be replaced.

Mom turned out to be
right! If you say thank you, for even the smallest
gift or slightest
show of kindness,
you'll feel happy.
Professor Vicki
Black, a psychology at Harvard, says gratitude
(
感谢
) is an important element
of
happiness.
In
his
recent
book,
Thanks
,
Black
uses
the
first
major
study
on
gratitude
to
prove
mom's viewpoint. He
explains how people have benefited - even improved
their health.
As
a
leading
scholar,
Black
notes
it
may
be
difficult
to
express
gratitude,
because
gratitude
is always other-
directed. You can be pleased or angry with
yourself and feel guilty about doing
something wrong, but you can never be
grateful to or for yourself. To feel grateful when
life
is a breeze and you
have more than you need
is
easy. To feel
grateful in time of
crisis---anger,
hatred
and
bitterness---
is
easier.
Also,
too
many
people
are
aware
of
life's
blessings
only
after
these
are lost.
Black, to enable
gratitude, encourages the readers of
Thanks
to keep a gratitude
diary. He
even provides easy-to-follow
directions on how to practice and develop
gratitude.
I'm not a
reader
or
advocate
of self-help books,
but I am thankful for the
reference I
found
in a newspaper article to the
research Black was conducting on gratitude
involving organ donors
and receivers.
The chance led me to this book.
Mom
implied
that kindness seems to find its
way
back to the giver
because life really is
all
about giving, receiving and repaying.
So I'll pay attention to her professional advice
and say:
Thank you, professor Black.
29. Why was Vicki Black's book
Thanks
mentioned?
A. To tell us Professor Black
supports mom's study on psychology.
B.
To tell us mom is as great a psychologist as
Professor Black.
C. To prove Professor
Black is a famous psychologist.
D.
To prove mom is right about her viewpoint on
gratitude.
30. When will it be easier
for you to feel grateful?
A. When
you get help during your hard times.
- 4 -
B. When you
receive gifts on your birthday.
C.
When you live a comfortable life.
D. When you are congratulated on your success.
31. What does the passage mainly
discuss?
A. Gratitude is important
to happiness.
B. There are many
ways of being thankful.
C. Being
thankful will keep you fit.
D. Mom
is great for her being thankful.

And,
Kopp

rise over the last two

When
temperatures rise, so do sea levels. That is
because snow and ice melt, or break off

The increased water makes the sea levels rise.
