Soccer
is
played
by
millions
of
people
all
over
the
world,
but
there
have
only
been
few
players
who were truly great. How did these players get
that way-was it through practice, or are
great players ―born, not made‖? First,
these players come from places that have had
famous stars
in the past-players that a
young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In
the history of soccer, only
six
countries
have
ever
won
the
World
Cup-three
from
South
America
and
three
from
Western
Europe. ____________-or a really great
player-from North America or from Asia. Second,
these
players
have
all
had
years
of
practice
in
the game.
Alfredo Di
Stefano
was
the
son
of
a
soccer
player, as was Pele.
Most players began playing the game at the age of
three or four.
Finally, many great
players come from the same kind of neighourhood-a
poor, crowded area
where a boy‘s dream
is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but
to become a rich, famous
athlete
or
entertainer.
For
example,
Liverpool,
which
produced
the
Beetle,
has
one
of
the
best
English soccer teams in recent years.
Pele practiced in the street with a ―ball‖ made of
rags. And
George Best learned the
tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball
off a wall in the slums
of Belfast.
All
great
players
have
a
lot
in
common,
but
that
doesn‘t
explain
why
they
are
great.
Hundreds of boys played in those
Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The
greatest players
are born with some
unique quality that sets them apart from all the
others.
1. What is the main idea of the
passage? (Please answer within 10 words)
2. Which sentence in the passage can be
replaced by the following one?
Generally,
where there are great respectable soccer players,
such players will come into being.
3.
Please
fill
in
the
blank
in
the
first
paragraph
with
proper
words
or
sentence
to
complete
the
sentence. (Please answer within 10
words.)
4. To be a
great soccer players, he needs some qualities.
What quality do you think is the most
important? (Please answer within 30
words.)

.
Translate the
underlined sentence in the third paragraph into
Chinese.
Keys:
1. Soccer
is popular, but truly great players are rare. /

great players.

3. There has never been a great
national team/ country
4. A great
soccer player requires a lot of qualities, of
which the most important is constant practice
all the time. Without enough practice,
you can do nothing at all.

最伟大的球员天生具有某种与众不同的奇特天赋。

One thing
Britain is famous for is pubs, and not trip to the
UK would be complete without a
visit to
one of the thousands of pubs across the country.
Pubs play an important part in the
social structure of the country. They are places
where all
ages
and
social
classes
mix
to
talk,
do
business,
or
just
spend
a
couple
of
quiet
hours
before
heading home in the evening.
There
are
many
different
types
of
beer
available
in
pubs.
Traditional
British
beer
is
called
bitter, or ale, and is usually served
at room
temperature. As a result, the
British are famous for
their ?warm
beer‘!
If
you prefer a cold
beer, ask for lager. This beer is a light yellow
in colour
whereas bitter is usually a
darker brown. All beers are served as pints
(500ml) or halves (250ml).
To
order,
you
need
to
ask
for
a
pint
or
half,
and
then
name
the
beer.
So,
you
could
say
―
.‖
Wine,
red
or
white,
is
normally
available
in
all
pubs,
as
are
spirits
such
as
whisky,
gin
or
vodka. It is not, however, necessary to
drink alcohol. Non
-
alcoholic
drinks are called soft drinks.
You can
have juice, lemonade or cola, among others.
If you visit a pub in a group, it is
important to pay for your ?round‘. This means that
you buy
a drink for everyone in your
group. Not buying your round is a big social
mistake! Remember that
you need to
order and pay for your drinks at the bar.
So, follow these tips if you want to
get the most out of visiting a pub, and, ―cheers!‖
1. What is the best title
of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)
2. Which sentence in the
passage can be replaced by the following one?
If you don‘t buy a drink for everyone
in your group, you are socially wrong.
3.
Please
fill
in
the
blank
in
the
third
paragraph
with
proper
words
or
phrases
to
complete
the
sentence. (Please answer within 10
words.)
4. If you are
in a pub, what would you like to drink? Why?
(Please answer within 30 words.)
5. Translate
the underlined sentence in the second paragraph
into Chinese.
Keys:
1. Pubs in the UK
2. Not buying your round is a big
social mistake.
3. A pint of bitter,
please. (A half of lager, please.)

Forgiving someone who has
hurt you or let you down is never an easy thing.
Several new
studies, however, say that
it could have a lot of health benefits. When you
think of forgiveness,
you
probably
don‘t
think
of
it
as
being
a
health
or
medical
problem.
Studies
from
Stanford
University, on the other hand, show
that something like anger can _____________.
When cartoon book characters like the
Incredible Hulk get angry, they change colours and
often
gain
special
power.
In
the
real
world,
anger
is
less
obvious
and
may
be
more
dangerous.
That‘s
why
Professor
Fred
Luskin,
founder
of
the
Stanford
Forgiveness
Project
and
author
of
Forgive
for Good, says being angry can harm your physical
and mental health. Two new studies
seem
to show the same idea.
The studies find
that people who are able to forgive feel less
stress, less back pain, and less
depression.
They
also
have
fewer
headaches,
lower
blood
pressure,
and
fewer
problems
on
sleeping.
So it doesn‘t
matt
er if your anger is caused by the
traffic or other things. Learning to let it go
is important. Techniques such as deep
breath or thought can help.
Or just ask
yourself if it‘s worth
hurting yourself
by staying angry with someone else.
Forgiveness does not
mean
that you simply accept what happened and say it‘s
OK. Instead,
it‘s a way of making peace
with yourself about what happened in the
past.
