Introduction
Network communicative English is
English used by netizens, both young and old,
in new social communication channels
such as internet chats, e-mails, BBS, electronic
forum
and E-messages.
Network
communicative
English has been
a new
variety of
English
with
the
wide
use
of
the
a
new
variety
of
English,
the
development of network communicative
English is taking great occupation in English
development history along with other
varieties as American English or Black English.
In previous studies, some have analyzed
linguistic features of the new English variety,
but less have paid attention to the
causes and influences of this development. As the
language
is
a
creature
of
culture
and
society,
apart
from
the
characteristics
of
the
network communicative
English from linguistic levels of the vocabulary
and grammar,
this
paper
is
to
analyze
the
causes
and
influences
of
the
network
communicative
English
on
the
development
of
the
English
language
from
a
sociolinguistic
perspective.
In
the
analysis,
major
methodology
of
showing
examples,
which
are
mostly collected from
both Chinese and foreign socialnetworks, is
employed.
2. Features of Network
Communicative English
The
network
communicative
English
is
spread
by
social
communication
on
the
internet,
and
is
a product
of
the
internet.
Thus, there is
synchronizationbetween
the
development
of
network
communicative
English
and
the
internet.
According
to
statistics,
at
present,
common
network
English
terms
have
surpassed
a
number
of
2000
in
the
network
socialcommunication.
What
are
the
characteristics
of
these
network
communicative
English?
Following
is
a
brief
introduction
in
aspects
of
vocabulary and grammar.
2.1
F
eatures of the Vocabulary
Language is the creature of the culture
and society. With the development of the
society, the new English words
are
emerging
and
replacing
the
cliché
s.
Besides
the
general
features
of
the
common
vocabulary,
for
its
instance
and
convenience,
the
network communicative Englishtakes on
such typical features as follows:
2.1.1
Innovation
The
internet
provides
people
a
wide
space
of
freeing
the
imagination
and
creativity.
Many
new
words
are
created
by
creative
netizens
by
rhetoricalways
of
metaphor,
homophone,
and
personification
and
so
on.
This
feature
of
innovation
is
mainly reflected in phonetic level. For
example, in network communicative
(1)
“
TAXI
”
has no relativeness to the vehicle but means
“
it is a
pity
”
( in Chinese
said
太可惜
, with a
similar phonetic pronunciation);
(2)
“
me
too
”
means
“
I disapprove of
that
”
(in Chinese said
我吐
, the word
“
too
”
has a similar phonetic pronunciation
with Chinese character
“
吐
”
).
2.1.2 Vividness
Many
combinations
of
numbers,
letters,
punctuations
and
special
symbols
are
used
to
express
the
different
feelings
—
happiness,
sorrow,
anger,
etc.
With
the
vividness of such
innovation, these combinations of different
symbols are quickly be
accepted
and
got
popular
among
the
netizens.
To
some
degree,
these
symbols
are
replacing words to express emotions.
For example,
(3)
“
:-D
”
means a big smile(a combination of colon, hyphen,
and the letter D);
(4)
“
:-(
”
means anger (a combination of colon, hyphen and
first-half parenthesis);
(5)
“
:-)
”
expresses
happiness
or
grinning
or
joking
(a
combination
of
colon,
hyphen and second-
half parenthesis).
2.1.3
Conciseness and Economy
The
mostoutstanding
characteristics
are
the
innovation
and
variation
of
the
vocabulary,
which
is
represented
by
the
wide
employment
of
abbreviationand
homophone to
make the language concise and brief. The two ways
have broken the
limitations
of
the
conventional
regular
writing,
and
invented
new
combinations
of
letters and numbers.
Abbreviations and acronyms are popular
used to make the expressioneconomic in
spelling. For example:
(6)
“
re
”
is short for
“
respond
”
(abbreviation)
(7)
“
ft
”
is short for
“
faint
”
(abbreviation)
(8)
“
PS
”
is short for
“
postscript
”
(acronym)
(9)
“
bf
”
is
short for
“
boyfriend
< br>”
(acronym)
(10)
“
dl
”
is short for
“
download
”
(acronym)
(11)
“
RASAP
”
is
short for
“
respond as soon
as possible
”
(acronym)
Such
abbreviations
and
acronyms
get
spread
for
their
economy
in
network
communication.
The linguistic phenomenon
of homophone can also be seen in such types as
thatof
the numbers, of the letters and
of the blending of the above. For example:
(12) 4 is used for
“
for
”
(homophone of the number)
(13)
U is used for “you”
, X is
used for
“
kiss
”
(homophone of the letters)
(14) H8 is
used for
“
hate
”
p>
, B4 is used for
“
b
efore
”
(homophone of the
two)
Homophones are vivid in speaking,
short in sight, and most importantly, easy to
be
typed
with
the
keyboard
both
on
the
computer
and
on
the
mobile-phone
when
communicating by such net available
devices.
Abbreviations
and
homophones
can
also
be
combined
to
make
the
communicativeEnglish
concise and economic. For example:
(15)
F2F
means
“
face
to
face
”
(F
is
the
abbreviation
of
the
“
face
< br>”
,
2
is
a
homophone of
“
to
”)
With
the
features
of
innovation,
vividness,
economy,
and
feasibility
of
the
vocabulary, such network communication
language presents its unique characteristics
of
great
innovation.
Moreover,
with
the
further
spread
of
the
social
nets
into
more
social fields, the
communication language can be more creative and
innovative.
2.2
G
rammatical Features
For the principle of economy in net
communication, the grammatical features of
network communicative English can be
shown as follows:
Firstly,
there is a high incidence of elliptical network
communicative
English,
many
sentences
are
around
2-4
words,
the
average
being
no
more
than
8
words.
In
order
to
be
brief
and
intimate,
users
tend
to
omit
parts
of
an
expression.
Usually,
when
the
subject
is
the
second
person
singular
and
the
predicate
is
the
copulative
verb, they are omitted together, leaving the
predicative alone as long as the
meaning can be expressed completely.
For example:
(16) on line?
(Are you on line?)
(17) leaving? (Are
you leaving?)
(18) busy? (Are you
busy?)
Sometimes, only one
verb is enough to express the meaning. For
example,
(19) eat? (Do you
want to eat this?).
Secondly,
there
is
nocapitalization
of
the
first
word
simplicity
and
convenience,
the
first
word
letter
of
a
sentence
is
usually
written
with
no
capitalization. For example,
(20) hi, everybody.
(21) ur name? (What is your
name? )
(22) uc? (You see?)
Thirdly,
punctuations
as
ellipsis,
question
marks
andexclamation
marks
are
frequently
employed.
For
example,
when
urging
the
other
side
to
answer
quickly,
several question
marks (???) are used and similarly, to express
approval to the other
’
s
opinion, several exclamation marks
(!!!!) can also be used.
3.
The Causesof
Network Communicative English
What
are
theorigins
of
such
linguistic
phenomenon?
What
are
the
cultural
and
psychological
features
that
can
explain
the
wide
spread
of
the
network
communicative
language? In sociolinguistics, language is an
indispensable carrier of
culture, and
culture finds a better representation through
language use. Following are
the
analyses
for
questions
above
from
the
perspective
of
social
and
cultural
elements.
3.1 The Sense of Effectiveness
In
west,
since
the
Third
Technological
Revolution
and
in
Chinasince
the
reforming
and
opening
up,
people
have
entered
an
era
of
greatly
valuing
the
effectiveness greatly. The competition
from the marketing economy also forces people
to raise effectiveness,
not
only in
work but
also
in
lifestyle.
In forums,
chat
rooms,
and
instant
communications
on
the
internet,
net
users
intend
to
raise
the
inputting
speed so as to
save the time. The innovation and slight changes
to the English words
and sentences aim
to simplify the language, and to make the net
communication more
