It was a hot July day in
Philadelphia. The five boys I was with had been
sick of playing marbles and
burning holes in dry leaves. So when
little Ned suggested climbing the cliff, the rest
of kids all agreed
excitedly, except
me. I hesitated. I longed to be brave and active,
like them, but I
’
d been a
sickly child most
of my eight years and
I actually wasn
’
t as strong
as the other boys.
“
Come
on!
”
Called Jerry, my best
friend.
“
Just being sick is
no reason to be a coward
(
胆小鬼
)
.
”
“
I
’
m
coming!
”
I
yelled, and ran along after them. Through the park
and into the woods we went, finally we
stood beneath the near
vertical
(垂直的)
wall of the
cliff, about 60 feet high. To me it looked like
the very
symbol of the Forbidden and
Impossible.
One by one, the other boys
climbed upward, finding handholds and toeholds on
rocks. I hung back
until the others
were partway up; then trembling and sweating, I
began to climb. A hand here, a foot
there, my heart pounding in my skinny
chest, I made my way up and up. At some point, I
looked back
and was horrified. The
ground at the base of the cliff seemed very far
below; one slip and I would fall.
But
the boys were talking loudly and happily above me.
In a few minutes they started up to the top while
I still struggled and crawled, far
behind.
“Hey,
wait,”
I
begged.
Sadly,
they
ignored
my
request
and
continued
their
way
to
the
top,
from
where
they would walk home by an easier route. Before
they left, they glanced down at me.
“You
can
stay if
you want
to”,
teased Ned.
Jerry looked concerned, but he went with the
others.
I looked down and
was overcome by dizziness; a nameless force seemed
to be dragging me to fall
off. I
grasped the rock as the world spun around. I could
never climb back down. It was much too far to
go, too dangerous.

I would never

moaning; I wondered who it was and realized that
it was I. The

home. Time dragged. And with each passing minute,
my legs and arms grew
sore/numb.
Something rolled down my cheeks. It was tears or
sweat, or both. The shadows gradually
lengthened, the sun disappeared from
the treetops beyond the clearing below, and dusk
began to gather.
The ground below the
cliff became dim. Can you imagine how desperate I
was at that time?
I didn’t know how

. I glanced down! It
was my
dad with a flashlight. But what
could he do? It was impossible for him to climb up
here and carry me
down. “Come on down,
my brave boy. Dinner is ready.” His comforting
tone seemed to have a magic
power.
Somehow, following his light, I struggled to inch
over one step. And then another. That’s how it
went. Finally I took the last step down
onto the bottom and into my father’s strong arms,
sobbing a little,
and then,
surprisingly, feeling a sense of immense
accomplishment and something like pride.

“Little
boy,
will you help an old man
up the hill
with his load?”
These words were spoken
by an old
gray-headed man, who was
drawing a hand-cart with a bag of corn in it.
“I can't;
I am in a
hurry,” said Hanson, the boy addressed,
who was hurrying to get to the
schoolyard,
that he might play with the
boys before school began.
The old man sat down on a stone at
the foot of the hill, to rest himself
and gather strength for the
ascent
(

). He stared after
Hanson, and sighed as he thought of the days of
his youth, now far back in
the past. A
tear was beginning to gather in his eye, when
another little boy, John Wilson, came up to him
and said,
“Shall
I
help you up the hill with your
load
?”
The old
man brushed his eyes with the sleeve of his coat,
and replied,
“I shall be very glad
to
have
your
help.”
He then stood
up,
and
taking
the
handle of
his cart,
pulled with
all
his
strength,
while
John
pushed behind.
When they reached the top of the hill,
John discovered a hole in the bag on the under
side, from which
the corn was dropping
out; putting forth all his strength, he turned the
bag, so that there might be no further
loss of corn.
“Thank you
very much,”
said the old man, as John
set out upon a run for his
school-
house; “and may
God
reward
you.”
But John was
out of hearing before the last words were spoken.
When John reached the school-house, he
was about ten minute too late; for which he
received a mark
(
违纪

). This was
a very unusual thing for him, as he was remarkable
for never being late. If he had told the
headmaster what had delayed him, he
would have been excused; but he thought it would
look a little like
boasting
(
吹牛
) to do so. So he took
the mark without saying a word.

When the school was over, Hanson
approached John.
Wondering why John was
late for school, Hanson
couldn’t help
asking him. When hearing that the reason
fo
r his being late was helping the old
gray-headed
man to push his cart,
Hanson was deep in thought, thinking what he had
seen this morning. He
shuffled his
feet and
blushed with shame, with his head lowered. Then he
marched into the headmaster’s room
withou

thinking twice and
told the headmaster everything. On knowing that,
the headmaster decided to award John
a
medal.
The next morning,
John set out early for the school-house as
usual.
When he entered his
classroom, he
found there was a bunch
of flowers on
his desk. After a while,
the headmaster came in, shared John’s good
deeds with the whole class and then
presented the medal to John. Soon the whole class
was ruled by the
lasting applause. A
sense of pride rose up in John’s heart.
He hoped that his act of
kindness would
spread
among other classmates.

the holiday.
How eagerly she

Kayla was told to wash the breakfast
dishes. After that, she was asked to give their
puppy a bath, which was
a big annoyance
to her. She pursed her lips and muttered, “This is
the last thing I want to do.” She went into
the bathroom reluctantly, picked up the
brush and began the work.
But things
began to change as she was doing the
chores
.
While
brushing the puppy, she found it was a
lot of fun with so many soap bubbles.
Then followed the task with the yard where Kayla
collected sticks.
She supposed the
small sticks basketballs, and shot them into a
large trash can. Soon the work was done.
Kayla was so felt proud to see how
orderly the yard looked. The lemonade tasted
sweeter after a hard day

“It’s

Suddenly, I was back at the

Had I ever been overcharged since? As my daughter

Old Man Donovan was a
mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at
them and even shot at them
with a
shotgun. At least that’s what we had
heard.
His small farm
bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister,
Leigh Ann, and I lived when we
were
growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint.
It held two treasures. One was his beautiful
fruit.
There
were
many
varieties
of
fruit:
pears,
apples,
and
lots
more
I
just
can't
think
of.
The
fruit
naturally drew the children to his
land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and
I
didn’t dare to
take his
fruit because of the horrible rumors we
had heard about Old Man Donovan.
One
summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It
was time to head back home. My sister and I
were feeling very daring that day.
There was a short cut to our house that went
through the Donovan farm.
We thought he
wouldn’t be able to see us run across his property
around the luscious(
可口味美的
)
fruit
trees.
We
were
almost
through
the
farm
when
we
heard,
“Hey,
girls!”
in
a
gruff
(
粗哑的
),
low
voice.
We
stopped
dead
in
our
tracks!
There
we
were,
face
to
face
with
Old
Man
Donovan.
Our
knees
were
shaking. We had visions of rocks
pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our
hearts.
“Come here,” he
said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still
shaking, we went over to him. He
held
out
several
ripe,
juicy,
red
apples.
“Take
these
home,”
he
commanded.
We
took
the
apples
with
surprised hearts and ran all the way
home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples.
As time went on, we often went through
Old Man Donovan’s farm, and he kept on giving us
more
luscious fruit. One day, we
stopped by to see him when he was on his front
porch (
门廊
). We talked to him
for hours. While he was talking, we
realized that we had found the other hidden
treasure: the sweet, kind
heart hidden
behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our
favorite people to talk to.

summer,
we
would
visit
Mr.
Donovan
and
talk
to
him.
We
shared
with
him
our
colorful
experience at school while he kept
giving out his luscious fruits to us as usual. As
time went by, we seemed
to be more a
family than good friends. But one summer, we were
informed that he was seriously ill and we
were anxious and restless, feeling like
sitting on pins and needles. We rushed straight to
the hospital to see
his
health condition. Weak as he was, he
comforted us that it wasn’t a big deal.
The next winter, word got
around that Old Man Donovan had died.
Hearing the bad news, I felt a lump
in
my throat, tears welling up in my eyes. The wind
whistled through the trees, as if mourning for the
death
of Donovan. I realized gone were
the days when we sat together chatting with each
other. However, he left
us a hidden
treasure
—
his kind heart,
which shall never die away with the passage of
time.

It was an Art lesson.
Rachel sat at the desk watching her classmates
busy preparing the water jars and
paints. She understood why Mrs. Weston
asked her to sit down and got Lisa to fetch
everything for her. It
was always a
disaster when Rachel tried to do Art!
Rachel sighed and reached out to dip
her brush in some black paint
and
—
oh, no! She knocked over
the
jar.
The
water
spread
across
the
desk
and
drowned
the
paper.
Lisa
called
Mrs.
Weston
to
see
what
Rachel had done. Rachel
went red in the face. She jumped to her feet to
get a cloth. Her chair fell over
backwards. She turned round and her
paint brush caught Lisa across the face, giving
her a black moustache.
Lisa was so
surprised that she fell back against a wire book
stand. It came crashing down and the books
went all over the floor.
How
clumsy! Rachel thought as she went home on the
bus. The bus stopped outside her house. She
jumped up and her elbow
(
肘部
) knocked a woman’s hat
right over
her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel
said sorry, got
off and ran indoors.
Mum wasn’t in the kitchen but lay in bed as she
caught an awful cold. Rachel offered
to
make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for
Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid
she would spill it.
“But
would you go to Mrs. Willow for some cold cure?”
asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at
once. “But Rachel, Mrs. Willow’s house
is full of beautiful things, so if she asks you to
come in, you’d
better say no.” Rachel
sighed and ran out.
Mrs.
Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp
blue eyes living in an old house. She opened
the door and invited her in. Rachel
said why she came and that she preferred to wait
outside remembering
her mother’s
warning. Mrs. Willow insisted Rachel
com
e inside. Rachel took a deep breath
and stepped in.
She looked round Mrs.
Willow’s sitting room and saw at once why Mum had
been worried.

“It’s not
looking too good, darling. I think you’d better
pack a few things and go to your mother’s
place. And you’d better take Rosie and
Monty with you.”
Putting
down the phone, Sara sighed. Tomorrow was her
husband Tony
’s birthday. She had
planned to
cook him a nice meal and
then surprise him with the new mountain bike she’d
bought for him. If she went
to her
mother’s house, Tony wouldn’t get his present for
days.
However, her
mother
’s house was the best place to be
right now. Being on higher land, it would be
safe from the floods. It had been
raining heavily for almost two weeks and the river
near Sara and Tony’s
house was rising
higher and higher all the time. Tony and others
from the village had spent the last two
days putting sandbags along the side of
the river to stop it overflowing. Now they feared
that their hard
work had been useless
and soon the whole valley would be flooded.
Sara dressed baby James in warm clothes
and collected the things she would need for him
over the
next few days. She put the
lead on the dog, Rosie. Just as she was reaching
for the car keys, Sara heard a
sound
like the noise bath water makes when you pull out
the plug. She looked at the back door. Water was
flowing in underneath. Turning around
she saw dirty brown water fountaining out of the
drain and filling
the sink. Quickly she
put James into her backpack and pulled it onto her
back. Calling to Rosie, she picked
up
the cat basket and ran to the front of the house
and out into the front garden.
The
water was already up to her knees. Rosie was
swimming beside her. Knowing the water would
soon be much deeper, Sara ran to the
car and opened the doors. She threw the cat basket
onto the roof of the
car and pushed
Rosie up beside it. Using the car seat as a step
she climbed first onto the front of the car and
then onto the roof. James, safely
attached to her back, made no sound at all. Sara
stared down at the water
which was
rushing past the car. It was already half way up
the doors, and still rising.

A poor boy tried to pay

“Excuse me, ...

I owe you?”
“Nothing,” she
replied with a warm smile. “My mother

thanked her sincerely. As Howard
Kelly
left, he not only felt stronger physically, but
the kindness also increased his faith in the whole
