China
Becomes World
’
s Largest
Movie Market
As the clock hit midnight
on Oct 15, China saw this
year
’
s box office taking
reach 12.95
million yuan ($$1.93
billion), helping the country overtake the North
America to soar as the
world
’
s
largest
movie market.
In spite of the COVID-19
blow, the domestic film industry has undergone a
stable recovery,
helped by summer and
National Day holiday blockbusters including The
Eight Hundred and My
People, My
Homeland. According to the movie information live
tracker Beacon, nearly 85 percent
of
this year
’
s box office were
earned by Chinese films.
Encouraged by
the National Day box office bonanza, which reaped
3.95 billion yuan, a dozen
of new films
will open ahead of the 2021 Spring Festival
holiday, one of the
country
’
s most
lucrative periods to attract floods of
moviegoers.
Among them include several
big-budget films pulled from 2020 Spring Festival
due to the
pandemic, such as Detective
Chinatown 3 and The Rescue, as well as some new
releases,
including the animated film
New Gods: Nezha Reborn, Assassins in Red and
Mulan.
Mulan
Mulan, directed
by New Zealand director Niki Caro, boasts a
majority-Chinese cast including
Liu
Yifei, Gong Li, as well as Donnie Yen, Jet Li,
Yoson An and Tzi Ma. The film is based on the
Chinese Ballad of Mulan. Set during the
Northern Wei Dynasty, it tells of a young woman
who
disguised herself as a man to take
her aging father
’
s position
in the army.
The film promises to be a
more realistic interpretation of Chinese history
and culture than its
animated
predecessor, which took the form of musical comedy
and included comic relief elements
such
as a speaking dragon representative of the family
ancestors.
New Gods: Nezha Reborn
New Gods: Nezha Reborn, a new animated
film from Light Chaser Animation, the same
production company behind the 2019
critically acclaimed animated movie White Snake,
is eyeing
a 2020 release. This movie
revolves around the boy-god Nezha, who returns as
an ordinary man to
find his path toward
becoming a true hero, some 3,000 years after he
conquers the Dragon King
and then
disappears in mythological times.

Our house was directly
across a popular hospital. We rented the upstairs
rooms to outpatients
at the clinic. One
summer evening, there was a knock at the door. I
opened it to see a truly awful
looking
man, his face lopsided from swelling, red and raw.
He told me he
’
d been hunting
for a
room since noon but he had no
success.
“
I guess
it
’
s my face. I know it
looks terrible, but my
doctor says with
a few more treatments...
”
For a moment I hesitated, but his next
words convinced me:
“
I could
sleep in this rocking
chair on the
porch. My bus leaves early in the
morning.
”
I told him we
would find him a bed, but
to rest on
the porch. It didn
’
t take a
long time to see that this old man had an
oversized heart
crowded into that tiny
body. He told me he fished for a living to support
his daughter, her five
children, and
her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a
back injury. He didn
’
t tell
it by
way of complaint. He was grateful
that no pain accompanied his disease.
At
bedtime, we put a camp cot in the
children
’
s room for him.
When I got up in the morning,
the bed
linens were neatly folded and the little man was
out on the porch. Before he left for his bus,
haltingly, he said,
“
Could I please come back
and stay the next time I have a treatment? I can
sleep
fine in a
chair.
”
He paused a moment
and then added,
“
Your
children made me feel at home.
Grownups
are bothered by my face, but children
don
’
t seem to
mind.
”
I told him he was
welcome
to come again.
In
the years he came to stay overnight with us. There
was never a time that he did not bring
us fish or oysters or vegetables from
his garden. When I received these little
remembrances, I
often thought of a
comment our next-door neighbor made after he left
that first morning.
“
You can
lose roomers by putting up such
people!
”
Maybe we did lose roomers once or
twice. But oh! If only they could have known him,
perhaps their illnesses would have been
easier to bear. I know our family always will be
grateful to
have known him; from him we
learned what it was to accept the bad without
complaint and the
good with gratitude.

Parking in the
CBD of any Australian city is expensive, hard to
come by and often an
unavoidable
headache. But Rylan Kindness, a 16-year-old
entrepreneur
(企业家)
from
Brisbane,
thinks he might have the
answer to this problem.
It was after
Rylan realized his parents were spending hours to
try and find parking deals in
the city
that he came up with the idea for a centralized
system. This system shows users the best
price for parking in the area they want
and offers users a daily deal with a discount.
Rylan now doubles as a high school
student and the CEO of Parking Deals Australia, a
role
he took on four months ago.
Parking Deals Australia
isn
’
t even
Rylan
’
s first business. When
he
was barely 11, Rylan came up with an
idea to sell wholesale scooter parts online,
purely because
he just wanted some
extra money. On the side,
he
’
s succeeding in other
passions as well. However,
he admits it
hasn
’
t always been smooth
sailing.
“
I
’
ve
learned so many crazy things through trial and
error. Every day I fail somewhere but I
always try to get better. My biggest
failure was when I first set up everything and
thought it was
what everyone else would
like but it
’
s a shock when I
see people not enjoying what
I
’
m doing. It
makes me want to cry a little bit but
then I polish the product and keep
going.
”
he said.
While Rylan
didn
’
t want to say exactly
how much his now-bustling company is worth, he did
admit he
’
s making
a tidy profit.
“
I earn more
in one day than I was earning for three months
working in a cafe but
I
’
m investing it all back
into the business.... what
I
’
ve learned is that if
you
’
re starting a
business just to make money,
you
’
re definitely going to
fail. I
’
m there to help
millions of people and
that
’
s what really gets me
going,
”
he said.
Rylan
’
s goal with
Parking Deals Australia is to take it countrywide
and save millions of
people millions of
dollars.
