letter
to Santa Claus, so Gabriella
asked people to send Santa Claus letters by
starting a page online. In
this way,
she raised 275,000 dollars for the Make
-

-
Wish
Foundation. It was enough to pay for 36
kids’ wishes.
Gabriella also gave speeches
(

It’s
reported
that
at
least
50%
of
US
adults
eat
food
dropped
on
the
floor.
Many
people
believe the
five
-
second rule. It says
food that has been on the floor for five seconds
or less is safe
to eat.
Donald Schaffner is a professor of food
science. His research has shown that the
five
-
second
rule
is
not
always
true.
Sometimes
bacteria
(
细菌
)
can
be
absorbed
in
less
than
a
second.
For
example, sticky, wet food like a candy
or a slice of watermelon will take in bacteria as
soon as it
hits the floor. “The wetter
the food, the higher the risk of taking in
bacteria,” Schaffner says.
Anthony
Hilton
studied
the
five
-
second
rule
too.
He
is
a
professor
at
Aston
University’s
School of Life
and Health Sciences. Hilton discovered that when
dry food like a cookie or biscuit
falls
on
the
floor,
it
takes
in
less
bacteria
than
wet
food.
“Food
that
is
on
the
floor
is
never
completely
risk
-
free to eat,” he says.
“But if you drop dry food on the floor, it’s
usually okay if
you pick it up very
quickly. Most clean homes don’t have dangerous
bacteria.”
What if you drop
food on the kitchen counter
(
操作台
) ? Dr. Steven Dowshen
says people
should
think
twice
before
following
the
five
-
second
rule.
“Kitchen
counters
might
have
more
dangerous bacteria.”
Whether or not people should eat
dropped food depends on the type of food and the
surface
on which it falls. So it might
be best to follow this rule instead: When in
doubt, throw it out.
32. According to Donald
Schaffner’s research, _______.
A. the
five
-
second rule is
completely wrong
B. it’s
dangerous to eat anything dropped on the
floor
C. candy takes in bacteria
more easily than watermelon
D. wet food
takes in bacteria quickly when dropped on the
floor
33. The word
“absorbed” in Paragraph 2 means “ _________” in
Chinese most probably.
A.
摈弃
B.
吸收
C.
控制
D.
研究
34. Anthony
Hilton believed that _______.
A. the
five
-
second rule is right
for dry food
B.
food dropped in our own houses is safe to
eat
C. dry food
can be eaten if people pick it up
quickly
D. it’s
dangerous to eat wet food dropped on the
floor
35. What is the best
title for the passage?
A. Should we follow the
five
-
second rule?
B. Don’t eat food dropped on the
floor!
C. Don’t
let all this food go to waste!
D.
Should food be dropped on the floor?
