Inside the Rain Room
The Rain Room has arrived and local art

Yes,
I
assure
you
it
is.
Once
inside,
visitors
find
a
long,
dark
room
with
a high ceiling. A
single bright light shines through heavy rain
falling around
visitors.
The

The

The

It
feels
like
a

storm
is
pouring
down.
But
the
storm
is
inside.
And
visitors
aren’t
getting
wet.
Instead,
visitors
wander in awe, admiring the rain and
the artists who created it.
The Rain Room was created to highlight
the connection between humans, nature
and technology. With a tracking system
that senses movement and stops the rain
wherever visitors move, it does just
that. Light and sound produce an experience
that
feels
both
natural
and
foreign.
The
exhibit

If Albuquerque
Police Officer Ryan Holets had his way, this story
would never
have got so much attention.
CNN would not have learned that Holets, while on
duty,
had agreed to adopt a baby from a
homeless drug addict.
Holets
values his privacy
(隐私)and didn’t do it
for the attention. He did
it just
because he knew it was the right thing to
do.
On
Sept.
23,
Holets
responded
to
a
call
about
a
possible
theft
from
a
convenience
store in
Albuquerque. By the time he arrived, the thief was
no longer there, but
Holets spotted a
woman in a grassy area behind the store about to
inject a needle
into her panion’s arm.
The woman, Crystal Champ, was eight months
pregnant.
After a short
conversation, he learned Champ longed for her
child to go to a
good family. Holets
offered to do just that.
When
Sergeant
Jim
Edison
learned
what
Holets
did,
he
was
floored.
In
his
10
years
as
a
police
officer,
he
has
seen
many
“heroic
acts”
but
none

what
Holets
did,
Edison said.
Edison awarded Holets for his
outstanding service for the city, but felt that
wasn’t enough. It’s his job to reward
his officers and encourage them to do the
right thing, so Edison signed Holets up
to do an interview for C
NN’s “Beyond
the
Call of Duty” series without
telling him.
“Every
day
Edison
calls
me
to
ask
for
forgiveness,”
Holets
said
laughing.
“And
I
keep assuring him that we’re fine. We didn’t quite
realize it would get this
response,
and
neither
did
he.
But
we
al
l
realize
it’s
a

and

One of Holets’s conditions when he
agreed to CNN’s interview was that his

superiors
would
not
set
up
a
GoFundMe
page
for
his
family.
“We
don’t
want
anybody
to
say

used

to

ourselves,”
Holets
said.
He

Indonesia
is
home
to
four
of
the
world’s
worst
polluted
rivers
and
ranks
second
when it es to plastic waste. Since
single-use packaging is a large contributor to
the
problem,
Evoware,
an
Indonesian-based
pany
decided
to
handle
that
issue
first.
And now a kind of
edible
(可食用的)
packets has been
invented.
After
investigating various material options, the pany
settled on seaweed.
Seaweed
does
not
require
resources
like
water,
or
large
amounts
of
space.
According
to
Evoware,

his
field. It also helps absorb harmful
greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Since
Indonesian
farmers already
harvest
more
seaweed than
they can sell, it
is easy
for
the pany to find the
material.
Though they will
not make public their production process, Evoware
announces
the seaweed
packaging contains
no
chemicals and
is safe
to
consume. In
addition to
wrapping fast food items, it can also
be used to house things like instant noodle
seasoning
(调味品)
and
instant coffee.
Though
the
edible
wrappers
may
not
have
any
taste,
the
same
cannot
be
said
about
the single-use cups that the pany has
also invented. The single-use cups that can
be used to serve cold drinks are
available with the taste of orange and green
tea.
While replacing plastic
with the seaweed products may seem like a no-
brainer
to
most
of
us,
it
is
a
hard-
sell
in
Indonesia.
According
to
Christian,
“The
awareness,
understanding, and sense of urgency to
minimize the use of single-use plastic are
still very low.” Also a factor is the
cost, which is higher than using
plastic.
Hopefully,
Evoware
will
succeed
in
convincing
Indonesians,
and
people
worldwide,
that switching to
their products will go a long way in protecting
our beautiful
planet.
28. What is Evoware’s purpose of
inventing eatable packages?
A. To make full use of seaweed.

The researchers
from the University of Liverpool have now spotted
smoke rings
in the ocean which have the
power to suck in the small marine creatures and
have
the potential to carry them at
high speed for a long distance.
In
the
ocean,
the
vast
eddies
(旋涡)
span
up
to
hundreds
of
kilometers
across
and
are
a

relatively.
But
now,
to
the
researchers’
surprise,
these
giant
eddies
(
which were

were spotted
spinning
(旋转)
in
opposite
directions,
travelling
up
to

times
the
speed
of
the
normal
eddies.
The
smoke rings are cut in
half by the sea surface due to which the
researchers could
see the two ends of
the half ring on the sea surface.
Described in a research paper published
in the journal Geophysical Research
Letters,
the
smoke
rings
were
discovered
by
analyzing
sea

measurements

with

“What

and
linked
to
each
other
so
that
they
traveled
together
all
the
way
across
the
Tasman
Sea,
taking
six months to do
it,’’ shared Chris Hughes, lead author of the
study published
i
n the
journal Geophysical Research Letters. “The smoke
rings require an area of
calm water to
expand, which itself is quite unusual. I have
looked at other areas
of other oceans
but I have only seen them in the oceans around
Australia, plus one
in the
Sout
h Atlantic,” he added.
The
smoke
rings
require
a
calm

to
form,
which
is
quite
unique
in
itself.
The
team
said
that
there
are
still
a

that
they

about
how these linked
eddies turn into one. They guess that these eddies

What has made the researchers amazed?

C. The smoke

34. What does
Chris Hughes’ words imply in the text?
A. The Atlantic Ocean is too rough to
create smoke rings.
B. The
birth of smoke rings needs a unique
setting.
C. No one actually
knows where the eddies form.
D. Smoke rings appear across the South
Atlantic.
35. What is the
