Symbolism of the colors in the Color
Purple by Alice
Walker
Ⅰ
.Introduction
The
Color
Purple
is
a
tale
of
the
struggle
of
Celie,
a
poor
uneducated
black
woman
who
finds
her
identity
and
independence
as
a
black
woman
despite
her
hardships.
Symbolism
is
one
of
the
major
elements
in
Color
Purple
by
Alice
Walker.
The
woman's
search
for
something
she
has
never
experienced
is
the
symbolization of the
mankind's search for love and happiness. The
meaning of names,
occupations, power,
pants, cloth,
words, eyes,
frogs, starts, shell, stamps are only
few
examples of the
symbols
used by
the author and are
very
important
in
understanding
not only the
characters of the story
, but also
global values such as love, power, mutual
understanding, and authority over
another person's life. In this paper, I mainly
want to
discuss the symbolism of the
colors in this book.
Key
words
:
colors, symbolism,
the color purple, Alice Walker
Ⅱ
.
The
symbolism of colors
Colors
can
express
emotions,
feelings
and
even
characters,
so
that
writers
are
inclined
to
use
color
to
modeling
features
of
figure
of
the
characters.
So
is
Alice
Walker. She
loves colorful
lives
and
flowers.
Her
sensitive
to the colors and delicate
perception, all
this sets
her to
uses different colors to
expresses different emotions of
the
main
character
Celie
in
the
book
the
color
purple.
For
example,
blue,
red,
black
and
the most important one the color purple, these
colors are all has special meanings
in
this book. In the following we will mainly talk
about that.
2.1
Blue
In the English language, blue often
represents the human emotion of sadness, e.g.
feeling
blue
German, on the other
hand, to be
(blau
sein)
is to be
drunk. This
derives from the ancient use of urine (which is
produced copiously by the
human body
after drinking alcohol)
in dyeing cloth
blue
with woad or indigo. It
may
also
be
in
relation
to
rain,
which
is
usually
regarded
as
a
trigger
of
depressive
emotions.
2.1.1
Blue in the novel
In this novel blue also
represents sadness and depression.
When Celie
was
given to a
chance to buy
herself a
new dress, because
red
is to
happy
lookin
so
she
can
only
choose
blue,
(
“Plenty
red
but
she
say
,
naw,
he
won’t
want
to
pay
for
red.
Too
happy
lookin.”
) .This
has
dropped
a
hit
that
Celie
’
s
life
is
very
horrible,
she
lives
in
sadness
and
miserable
life.
Her
step
father
raped
her,
her
husband
doesn’t
love
her,
he just thought she
is a tool to
help
him
look after
his
five
children
and
a
woman
who
answer
his
desire.
Celie
is
a
representative
of
black
woman in
that age, no equal right, bad treated by man and
the whites, blue just shows
the tragic
live that black womem living in that age.
In the book there is another place used
blue, that is the blues which Shug song in
the book.
The blues
delivered Celie
from
her
black
hole
indirectly. Shug
was empowered
by the blues,
and was able to cope and even rise above through
music. She transferred
this empowerment
to Celie. She was able to show Celie what
is
really
meant
to be a
woman, a black woman. So blue
also means a kind of transition to purple.
2.2 Black
Black signifies
the
negative
aspects
of
human
life,
for
example
terror,
death,
disease, famine, evil, sorrow and
mourning.
Several Hebrew
words are used for example:
'cochereth'
meaning black stone used in paving
'iyshown' meaning middle of the night
(deepest blackness)
'qadar' meaning to
mourn or to be dark
'shachor' meaning
black
kkimriyr meaning blackness or
gloominess
