In “All Summer in a Day” (
March
1954),Ray Bradbury creates a strange world on the
planet
Venus. The sun is only visible
for two hours every seven years.
After
I read the story “All Summer in a Day”, I felt
very uncomfortable. How many people can
imagine that they would see the sun
once during several years? What does this world
become if
the sun disappears?
However, in this story, children did
not remember the sun even if they had seen it when
they
were two years old. Just like the
sun had never came out. Except Margot--- a little
girl moved to
Venus from earth five
years ago and she was the only one in her class
remembered the sun.
she was beautiful
and frail, but solitary. She described the sun as
“a flower”, “a penny” or “a
fire”
which
detached
herself
from
other
children.
Because
no
one
believed
her.
Living
in
the
world
without
sunshine,
people
became
vicious
and
wicked,
even
children.
They
mocked,
neglected and hated
Margot.
As the sun really came out,
they indulged in their astonishment and enjoyment.
They all did not
remember
Margot
until
the
sun
disappeared
again.
I
think
that
the
sun
aroused
their
,
at the end of the story, they felt
ashame
d and guilty that Margot didn’t
get to
see
the
sun.
That’s
why
they
won’t
look
at
each
other
and
why
their
faces
were
pale.
They
learned that the
consequences of their actions derived from
jealousy were much worse than
they had
expected.
The sun represents light,
goodness and warmth. Without the sun, the world
will be hopeless. In
my
view,
Margot
was
special,
just
like
the
sun.
She
believed firmly
what
she had
seen,
even
