俄罗斯有个
“
街头儿童世界杯
”
。
Next week, Russia will host the 2018
FIFA World Cup.
But it’s not the only
international soccer competition in
Russia this
year.
In May, 230 teenage boys and girls from
21
countries visited the country to
take part in a
competition of their
own, The Moscow
Times
reported. The competition is known as
the Street
Child World Cup because all
of the players are street children.
According to the United Nations, there
are about 150 million street children
living around the world. Very few of
them go to school and most live in poor
conditions (
条件
).
The Street Child World Cup is held to raise
awareness of the
challenges
(
挑战
) street kids face. It
also encourages governments
(
鼓励政府
) to do
more
to help these children.
The games are
held every four years, just before the FIFA World
Cup. They were
first held in South
Africa in 2010, and then traveled to Brazil in
2014. This year,
they’ll be in
Russia.
The games also help to
build the children’s confidence
(
自信
) and
self

worth
(

). “The most
important thing here is about making street
children know that they
can be
somebody,” said John Sadock from Tanzania, who
took part in the 2014
games.

(B) A ‘dog day’ at

身怀绝技的狗狗来到了我们身边。
When I was studying in China, a cat
often came into our classroom. It was
really cute and all of us liked it. Of
course, everyone loves dogs and cats. What if a
dog came to your school? How fun would
that be?
Actually, some
dogs came to my school last week. Ten dogs were
invited to our
school to give us a
break from our schoolwork. We had 10 groups. Each
group got
one dog. We took turns
playing with the dogs.
Our
dog was named Alice. She was good at playing fetch
(
取物
). The dog
trainer (
驯兽师
)
gave me Alice’s teddy bear and asked me to throw
it as far as I
could. I threw the
little bear far. Alice ran as fast as an arrow
(
箭
) and came back
with the toy. She put the toy in my
hand gently. Then, I threw it into the sky. To my
surprise, she jumped high and caught it
in midair. Everyone was surprised and gave
her a round of applause
(

After playing with Alice, we watched
the other dogs play. It was so fun to watch
them. It was a wonderful
afternoon.

物有什么关系?
Why do we call the forefinger
shizhi
?
A: In Chinese,
shi
means “food”
-
so
shizhi
means
“food finger”.
A long time
ago, everyone in China ate with their hands. At
the time, people
often used their
forefingers to taste food, such as soup. They’d
quickly dip
(
浸入
) their
forefinger into the soup. Then, they’d put the
finger into their mouth and
taste it.
That’s why the forefinger became known as the
“food finger”.
But why did
people choose the forefinger to do this? Perhaps
because it is more
