How to listen
to Section A
In Section A, there are 9 or 10
dialogues conducted between a man and woman. After
the
dialogue, a third voice will ask
one question related with it. Listeners will have
to choose the best
answer
among
the
4
choices
given.
Between
the
2
questions
there
are
13
seconds
for
you
to
choose the right answer. Some points
that need attention:
1.
Pay special attention to the
conversation background or environment
and the contents of the
conversation.
A
conversation
can
not
be
isolated
with
language
environment
and
some
necessary
information exchanged in such an
environment.
For example, In a store, a
shop assistant and a
customer
might
discuss
the
articles
and
prices;
In
hospital,
doctors
and
patients
might
discuss
problems of health and treatment.
In school,
teachers
and students
might
discuss
problems
of
study, exercises , homework and
examinations.
At airports,
clerks and passengers might discuss
problems
of
flights,
flight
number,
departure
and
arrival
time.
If
we
are
familiar
with
the
conversation
environment,
generally.
we
can
expect
and
predict
the
contents
of
the
communication. On the other hand, if we
know the contents of the communication, we can
infer
the relationship of the two
speakers.
2.
We
have to be clear about the purpose of the
speakers.
A
conversation
as
a
communicative
language
is
intended
to
achieve
certain
purpose
or
aim.
For
example,
One
person
of
the
dialogue
might
seek
help,
or
offer
help;
One
might
suggest or ask for advice, and the
other might agree, refuse,
support or reject. Therefore , when
you are listening, pay attention
to
the
whole situation,
understand
the purpose of the speaker,
and grasp
the
important
information.
3.
Understand the questions by the
3
rd
person after the
conversation.
