TITLE: Best Office Safety Practices
BEST OFFICE SAFETY PRACTICES
It is amazing how many
people who work in offices that take
Safety
for granted. Most
people
think of a construction site or
factory when they think of safety
hazards
, but we should “think”
Safety
just as much in the
office. Statistics show that many projects have
more office related
injuries
than
in
construction…probably
due
to
lack
of
awaren
ess
of
the
hazards
in
the
office
environment. We spend a lot of time in
the field at the beginning of each day talking
about the
hazards of the job and how to
avoid them. Office environments actually have
potential for many
hazards,
and
awareness
of
such
hazards
is
the
first
step
to
preventing
the
hazard
from
becoming an incident.
Let’s
begin now and dedicate ourselves to taking a few
moments
each
day
to mentally prepare ourselves for a safe day in
the office.
Let's review some of the
situations that increase exposure to injury in
offices and what we can
do about them
to ensure we prevent incident.

?
Avoid
walking and reading at the same time. If it is
important enough to read, then stop
and
read it. This commonly occurs while retrieving
documents from the printer.
?
Never leave file cabinets open and
unattended; not even for a minute. How long does
it
really take to open a file cabinet?
Yet many accidents have been the result of same.

?
Never
run
in
the
office.
Nothing
is
so
important
that
you
must
risk
running
into
a
co-
worker,
slipping, tripping or falling.
I’m
thankful for your energy, but please channel that
energy in more productive and safe ways
than running in the office.

?
Leave
your
shoes
on.
If
your
shoes
are
too
uncomfortable
to
wear
all
day,
then
wear
different shoes. Running around the
office barefoot is a sure way to stub a toe or
pick up
a staple.
?
Be
careful
of
slippery
surfaces!
Clean
up
spills
immediately
and
walk
slowly
leaning
slightly forward on
icy/slippery surfaces. Store wet umbrellas
so they don’t cause slips!
<
/p>
?
When
you
must
carry
files,
don't
carry
more
than
you
are
capable.
Don’t
stack
things
above eye level. Use a cart or make
more trips.
< br>
?
Lift with
your legs, not your back!
?
Avoid bending
at the waist when accessing low files. If you must
access low files, either
stoop down or
get on your knees.
?
Avoid twisting
and reaching for files or other materials in your
work station. This includes
reaching
for your brief-case or laptop. Move your whole
body to prevent back strain.
?
Avoid
placing
extension
cords
on
the
floor.
These
are
tripping
hazards
and
can
also
become fire hazards. If unavoidable,
ensure the tripping hazard is reduced by securing.
