China's Ministry of Education has
called for an urgent nationwide inspection of all
school buses in operation after a
deadly road accident in the northwest
province of Gansu. The latest report from local
authorities has confirmed 20
dead,
including 18 preschoolers and two adults, in a
head-on collision between a school bus and a
truck.
The accident occurred in the
city of Qingyang Wednesday morning as the children
were on their way to school. Local
authorities blames overloading and
foggy weather for the accident, saying the van
with nine seats, was carrying 64
people.

China's
Ministry
of
Commerce
says
the
country's
exports
are
feeling
the
pinch.
This
is
due
to
global
economic
uncertainties, weak
demand and growing trade friction. A spokesman for
the ministry cited the latest trade figures
as evidence that China's currency was
not undervalued. CCTV reporter Zhang Nini has the
story.
China
’
s
foreign trade growth dropped 12 percentage points
over last year
, but still rose 24.3%
percent year on year
to over 297
billion US dollars in the first ten months. Import
growth dropped to just under 27 percent, while
export
growth has fallen steadily,
hitting just below 16 percent in
October
. That was down from this
year
’
s peak of 36
percent in March.
Shen
Danyang, Spokesman of Ministry of Commerce, said,
dollars this year
. The
shrinking surplus, according to Shen, is evidence
that China is rebalancing towards domestic
demand. He also rejects calls for
faster yuan appreciation.
Shen also said
that the Yuan's appreciation is not the main
reason for the US trade deficit. He also added
that the US
should relax export
restrictions to China to help further balance
bilateral trade.

Private
bookstores
disappearing
Over the past few years, more and more
independent bookstores have been forced out of
business. Surviving amidst
today
’
s ferocious
competition is near impossible for these small
retail outlets.
The Photosynthesis
Bookstore in Wudaokou, which used to be one of the
most popular bookstores in Beijing, has now
closed its doors.
The Photosynthesis Bookstore in
Wudaokou, which used to be one of the most popular
bookstores in Beijing, has
now closed its doors.
A reader said,
bookstore. Of course, sometimes I buy
books online, but actual bookstores allow me to
enjoy the process of buying
books more
than the online bookstores.
Like this
bookstore, many other private outlets failed to
keep their business above water
. They
suspended their
operations, moved to
another site, or even closed down. Xu Chunyu,
owner of a private bookstore in Wudaokou,
gives the reasons.
In the past few years, many private
bookstores have closed their doors. Surviving in
the
ferocious competition has become a
pressing problem for these retail
outlets.
Xu Chunyu, a bookstore
owner
, said,
the
difficulties of many other types of shop. So I
think a more important factor is the changing of
people
’
s reading
habits. Some people have lost their
interest in reading, especially in in-depth
reading. This change shakes the roots
of private bookstores. I think this is
the fundamental reason for the closure of private
bookstores.
Electronic books and online
bookstores also contribute to the closure of the
private bookstores. Electronic reading
devices such as the iPad, Kindle, and
mobile phones, enable people to read in a more
convenient way, and in online
bookstores, buyers can purchase their
books at a much lower price.
Many
people worry that private bookstores may finally
disappear
. But one publisher says
private bookstores have
irreplaceable
roles to play.
T
an Hao, a
publisher
, said,
city
’
s cultural
construction. And I think paper reading will still
be a very important way of reading in the future.
Bookstores also have some features that
online booksellers do not have. They can hold
literary events or lectures to
attract
readers. These activities not only elevate the
taste of bookstores, but also the overall taste of
the city.
Nowadays, fewer people spend
time reading a book as thick as this one. The
changing of people
’

along
with
the
rising
of
electronic
reading
and
online

—
these
are
the
challenges
facing

Shanghai issues
China's 1st local bonds
Shanghai has
launched public bidding for 7.1 billion
yuan
’
s worth of local
government bonds. Tuesday
’
s
launch was
the first time a local
Chinese government was allowed to issue bonds in
more than two decades.
The city offered
two bonds. The three-year maturity issue had a
total value of 3.6 billion yuan, and the five-year
bonds
added
up
to
3.5
billion
yuan.
The
interest
rate
for
the
three-year
bond
is
3.1
percent,
and
it
was
over-subscribed 3.5
times.
The five-year bonds carry an
interest rate of 3.3 percent; they were over-
subscribed 3.1 times. The Development
Bank of China, the Bank of
Communications, and the Bank of Shanghai
underwrote the issue, which was available
only to institutional investors.
Analysts point out that despite their relatively
low return, the bonds were obviously
popular
.
Qian
Qimin, associate director of Market Research Dept.
SWS Research, said,
“
The
one-year bank deposit interest
rate is
now is 3.5 percent. Longer-term investments should
command a higher rate, but we see the interest
rate even
for these five-year bonds was
3.3 percent. Still, the over-subscription rate
this time was lower than that for the
central
government
’
s bond issues.
That means more investors are interested in the
local government bonds.
”
Municipal authorities have been barred
from borrowing directly from markets for the past
two decades. And, this is
the first
time that local governments in China are being
allowed to issue bonds to manage local finances.
