From
the
first
day
he
entered
my
classroom,
Willard
P.
Frank
existed
in
his
own
world,
shutting out his classmates and me. My
attempts at building a friendly relationship with
him were
met with complete
indifference. I could see that his classmates
fared no better. Willard was strictly
a
loner who seemed to have no desire or need to
break his silence
.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday,
we received word of the annual Christmas
collection
of money for the less
fortunate people in our school district.
“Ch
ristmas
is
a
season
of
giving
,
”I
told
my
students.
“There
are
a
few
students
in
the
school who
might not have a happy holiday season. By
contributing to our Christmas collection,
you
will
help
buy
food,
clothing
and
toys
for
these
needy
people.
We
will
start
the
collection
tomorrow.”
When
I
called
for
the
contributions
the
next
day,
I
discovered
that
almost
everyone
had
forgotten
except
for
Willard
P.
Frank.
The
boy
dug
deep
into
his
pants
pockets
as
he
walked
slowly
to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters
into the small container.
“I don’t need
milk for lunch
,
” he
mumbled. For a moment, just a moment,
he smiled. Then
he turned and walked
back to his desk.
That night, after
school, I took our few contributions to the school
principal. I couldn’t help
sharing the incident that had taken
place.
“I may be wrong, but I believe
Willard might be getting ready to become a part of
the world
around
him
,
” I told the
principal.
“Yes.” he
nodded.“And we might do well to have him
share a bit of his world with us. I
just
received
a
list
of
the
poor
families
in
our
school
who
most
need
help
through
the
Christmas
collection. Here,
take a look at it.”
As I
gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank
and his family were the top names on
the list. Seeing this, I decided to do
something for him
.

m. Kathy, a

Although

Snow began when she was halfway home.
Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway
was closed because a tractor had slid
off the road. She texted some friends and her mom,
and tried
not to sleep as she
waited
.
After a
couple of hours, however, conditions worsened.
Strong winds began rocking Kathy’s
car.
She couldn’t see
anything
outside, and snow was drifting up her
doors. It was, she says,
“a
total whiteout and rows of cars and
trucks.”
Late in the

Once as it got

highway and find her.

Near 10

m. Cris reached Kathy. He
directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder
and
asked her to get into his
snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for
home, the fun started. About five kilometres into
the journey, Cris made a
mistake. What
he thought was a shallow

浅沟

deep trough(
水槽
). Instead
of coming out the other side, they just
kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery
snow
was over their heads.

To be
honest, sometimes, I hate it when I start thinking
about money because it brings me
down
and drives me sad. When I was younger, I always
wondered why money was so important.
There wasn’t anything I needed. It’s
good to be a kid, since he or she doesn’t have to
worry about
responsibilities
. But as
everyone get older, of course that changes. I work
almost every day, but it’s
still not
enough. That’s what is discouraging—it’s never
enough.
Right now I have to
sacrifice(

make. I put my school on hold so that I can
pay for my girlfriend’s school fee and
everything else. I’m very supportive in everything
I do, and
she
is
also
very
supportive.
We
warm

up.
Hoping
she
really
gets
everything
right,
because we only have each other. I find
that hope is my inspiration and that everything
will work
out however hard it gets.
Even though I find that life is hard, it never
stops me from helping others,
especially those who are less
fortunate. While I might be going through hard
times myself, there
are those out there
who could be going through even harder times.
Last night, on my way home I stopped by
to buy some burgers in a fast food restaurant. A
homeless man approached me and
asked
,
“Do you have any
bottles lying
around
?
” I knew he
would recycle them for a few cents, but
I didn’t have any. I
said
,
“Sorry, I don’t.” And
again he
asked
,
“Can you
spare some change
?
” I smiled
and said
,
“Sorry, I can’t.”He
was very
polite. He
smiled
back and said
,
“OK,
thank you
.
” Even
though he didn’t have anything, he was still
in good
spirits. Just from
the way he spoke, I could tell he was fine.

It was a warm and sunny

abuzz
with

Today,
Abigail’s
class
was
going on a field trip to
the zoo to learn more about the animals and their
natural habitats.
“Before you leave the

To make sure no one

But
sometimes, Derrick does not follow the

today, Derrick
would follow the rules
so they would not get in trouble.
While
the rest of the students got off the bus, Abigail
and Derrick quickly ran off to explore.
They found the exhibits for many
different kinds of animals and learned a lot about
their natural
habitats. They saw the
elephants playing and they saw giraffes eating.
They saw the polar bears
sleeping and
the monkeys leaping. Abigail asked
Derrick
:
“Derrick, what is your favorite
animal
?
”
“I think I like chimpanzees best.
They
have a lot of energy, just like
me! What animal do you
like,
Abigail
?
”
“I love polar bears! I think their
lifestyle in the Arctic is very
interesting.”
A few hours
later, Abigail and Derrick started to feel hungry.
They made their way back to
the
zoo
entrance
to

lunch

the
Rainforest
Cafe.
The
Rainforest
Cafe
is
both
Abigail
and
Derrick’s favorite
restaurant because there is an aquarium
inside. The restaurant is also famous for
its chocolate cake, which Abigail
ordered for dessert after they had finished their
lunch.
As Abigail was finishing her
cake, Derrick excused himself to go to the
restroom. About ten
minutes later, a
sudden alarm began to go off and a voice came over
the loudspeaker.
“Attention! Someone
has opened the chimpanzee exhibit! Some
chimpanzees have
escaped
!
”
People were screaming and starting to
run. Abigail looked for Derrick, but he was
nowhere to
be found.

Therefore she had chosen to leave him.
She asked her parents to leave his

Though born into a rich family, by
twenty, Hilary had spent all the money. He then
had some
trouble
with
the
bank
and
was
put
in
prison.
He
escaped
and
ran
to
Australia,
where
he
could
either die or work, which gave him no
pleasure. Then he remembered that he had an
aunt
.
She was his
father’s only sister, but his father used to
say she brought no glory to the family.
It seemed that his aunt had failed to
marry a nobleman. Instead, she had chosen a
businessman as
her husband. So her
brother considered her dead. Later on, her husband
died and left her a lot of
money; but
that did not bring her back to life
in
her brother’s opinion.
Hilary discovered his aunt’s address.
Fortunately she remained faithful and honest to
him. So
Hilary soon moved into her
house and lived comfortably.
Soon his
aunt was deadly ill. Hilary was very worried. Fate
had found a home for him, and
was now
going to throw him out of it. There was only one
thing that could save him: her
will
.
“Will
?
”she
said
,
“Yes,
I
have
made
one.
That
was
when
I
was
a
girl
and
had
not
much
money. I left all my money to some
religio
us people.”
“Didn’t you make another will when you
were married.” Hilary asked.
“No
,
”she said in
a low voice,
“There was no
need. When I finally had a lot of money I
found I had no relations.”
On the next day he went to the public
library and examined a book of law. It told him
what
he already believed. When a woman
is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new
will must be
made. If no new will is
made, the money goes to the nearest relation.
Hilary knew that he was his
aunt’s only
relation. His futu
re was safe.
After
a
few
months,
Hilary’s
problems
became
serious.
He
badly
needed
money.
He
had
expensive tastes, and
owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They trusted
him because his aunt was
rich; but the
debt was terrible.

Paragraph 1
:
Unfortunately
his

not
want

matters
at
all
. Hilary began to wonder
about a new problem. Should it be
better for his aunt to die now so that he could
get the money to
pay off his debts?
Just then, his aunt told him that she was going to
send for her lawyer. Worried
that his
aunt might leave all her money to someone else in
her new will, he made a quick decision
to put her life to an end.
Paragraph 2
:
One
night,
his
aunt
asked
him
to
prepare
the
medicine
for
her
.
Realizing
it
was
a
good
chance to carry out his
plan, Hilary doubled the amount of the medicine,
which would surely put
his aunt to
sleep forever. Actually his aunt was so well aware
of his intention that she explained
that if she could live until tomorrow,
she would make a new will in his favor and that if
she died
that night, he would get
nothing. Hearing this, Hilary attempted to stop
her drinking the medicine,
but it was
too late.

。
I encountered God the
summer I was five. My father had finally grown too
sick to get out of
bed, so the heat and
nervous tension in the air inside the house made
it impossible to breathe. I
would
escape by squeezing under the front porch. All
manner of creatures lived there, but I mostly
ignored them, with one
exception
—
a little frog who,
every time I crawled under the porch, stared
at me with great, golden eyes.
In late June, the frog finally hopped
(
跳跃
) toward my arm and
stared at me, demanding eye
contact.
Once he had my attention, he opened his wide
mo
uth and said, “Hello,
Sophie.”
I should have been
shocked, but for some reason, I wasn’t. Perhaps at
five years old, I was
more receptive to
something against the laws of nature. At any rate,
I was not shocked that a frog
could
speak. I had a more pressing question.
“How do you know my
name
?
”
The frog blinked slowly. “I know
everything. I am God.”
I
spoke,“You can’t be God. You’re too
small.”
He extended a long,
webbed finger and pointed to the edge of
the porch’s shadow—
to the
spot where my mother had tried to grow
flowers there for years. She had stopped trying
when my
father’s condition
worsened.
“Look
there
,
” commanded the frog,
and I stared as a beautiful white flower blossomed
as if
stretching its limbs after a long
sleep. In my five years, I had never seen anything
so splendid.
God and I became good
friends that summer. I spent every day under the
porch, talking to
him.
Sometimes I asked God questions.
Sometimes he answered. Once, I asked him where
Heaven
was.
“Heaven
,
”he said,
“is where I live.”
In
Au
gust, my father’s
illness
had progressed to the point that I was
sent to my aunt’s house
in
Virginia.
I
told
God
I
would
be
back
soon,
and
then
waited
in
Virginia
for
my
father
to
get
better.

Death

my father had been lying in

his

I thought she

Paragraph 2

I

to find my father. I ran to the front porch.
However, I had grown during those six months in

I

I
sat
in

of

all
afternoon, calling for someone to

No frog jumped out of its

started to cry.

watched

But
then,

I’d

many
times
before. They
were heading at
speed in the direction of the pool. Most people
knew to look out for them, but
from the
screams that started coming from the beach, I
could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the

My

heard the screaming as

together we rushed to the
steps that
led down to the sea
.
Once we got closer, we discovered the
waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool
and
into the open sea. I knew that the
nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to
reach us. Waiting
for
help
wasn’t

I

in

way
I
wanted
to
impress everyone; at 19, a deal like
that can seem like a good opportunity to show
off
.
Moises and I
dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to
get to them. When we finally
reached
them, they were almost lifeless with only their
heads coming in and out of the water. We
could tell they wer

alive from their small breaths but it was clear
that they wouldn’t have
been able to
stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled
him over my board. Moises moved
the
girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them
back to the shore, but we were too far out.

I
have
worked
within
team
environments
for
many
years.
But,
I
learned
about
teamwork
many years before
the term became a popular word in organizations.
Are large organizations the
only places
where teamwork exists?
When
I
was
a
teenager,
I
had
the
opportunity
to
visit
many
country
farms
along
with
my
father
who
taught
music
lessons
to
many
farm
kids.
I
always
remember
one
farm
in
particular
where both of the
farmer’s
sons took guitar
lessons from my father.
The farm on
which the boys lived was a small dairy farm where
milking the cows was a daily
routine
both early morning and at night. The farm was big
enough, though, that one person, the
father, could not manage it
alone and certainly could not do all
the
tasks by himself as well as
plant the crops in the early
spring and harvest them for his cows
both in late June and in early
September. This meant that if the farm
was to grow and support the family, everyone had
to work
and
help.
This
meant
that
all
family
members,
including
the
farmer’s
wife,
had
a
set
of
clear
responsibilities on a daily basis,
seven days a week. As you may know, dairy cows
must be milked
every
day
including
Saturday
and
Sunday
—
there
is
no
rest
on
a
farm
—
no
days
off
—
no
sick
time
—
nor any
holidays.
So,
what
developed
through
necessity
was
the
original
teamwork
—
teamwork
that
meant
survival, growth and enough money to
feed the family, buy the necessary farm supplies
like tools
and machines. If there was
no teamwork, there would be no
farm
—
it was that simple.
If you have a chance some time in the
future, I would encourage you to visit a working
farm
like this. It is too bad
t
hat more people couldn’t experience
the original team on a farm before they
start to talk about what teams are and
how they should operate
—
they
may learn more than they
might first
realize.

markets. However, if there was no teamwork, there
would

At this moment, Paul

him. He pulled in
front of it as the
wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away
now.

One weekend in July, Jane

As she picked her way carefully along

Unfortunately, the trees

another

an open area and flag them if they came
back again.

One weekend in July,
Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours
to camp overnight
by a lake in the
forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant
subject came up and they started
to
quarrel. By the time
they reached the
lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m
going
to find a better spot for us to
camp.” and walked away.
With
no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a
long time. After she had climbed to a
high place, she turned around, hoping
to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing
but forest
and, far beyond, a
snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized
that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried.
“Help!”
No reply. If only
she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with
Tom. Jane kept moving,
but the farther
she walked, the more confused she became. As night
was beginning to fall, Jane
was so
tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying
awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to
be with Tom and her family. She wanted
to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane
rose
at
the
break
of
day,
hungry
and
thirsty.
She
could
hear
water
trickling
(
滴落
)
somewhere at a distance. Quickly she
followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy,
she also
saw some berry bushes. She
drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had
she tasted anything
better. Feeling
stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream
and hope it would lead her to the
lake.
As she picked her way carefully along
the stream, Jane heard a
helicopter. Is
that for me?
Unfortunately, the trees
made it impossible for people to see her from
above. A few minutes later,
another
helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow
blouse, thinking that she should go to
an open area and flag them if they came
back again.
But no more helicopters came and it was
dark. _________________________________
It
was daybreak when Jane woke up.

Possible version:
But no helicopters came and it was
getting dark. Jane was sad. She sat by the stream
with
sadness, resting her aching feet.
‘If I hadn’t quarreled with Tom, I wouldn’t have
to be here.’ Jame
thought regretfully
with tearing welling up in her she wanted to say
sorry to Tom for
losing her temper!.
However, the only thing she could do was lie by
the stream and wait for help.
Soon she fell asleep .
It
was daybreak when Jane woke up. She stood up to
find something to eat. She walked on
until
she
came
to
an
open
area
where
water
and
berries
were
available.
Suddenly
she
heard
a
helicopter. She took off her yellow
blouse and began shaking it violently, hoping
someone could
see her. To her joy, the
helicopter slowed down and landed on the ground.
With the door open,
Tom ran out. Seeing
Jane, he was so excited that he hugg
ed
Jane tightly. “Tom, I won’t lose my
temper again. I want to stay with you
forever.” Jame said in tears.
But no helicopters came and
it was getting dark. Feeling scared and helpless,
Jane sat beside
a tree and held her
shoulder in her arms to make herself warm. Slowly,
the sun hid itself behind
the
mountains
and
soon
it
was
hard
to
see
anything.
Looking
through
the
thick
darkness,
Jane
seemed to see Tom’s smiling face. She
said to herself for thousands of times
that she wouldn’t
leave Tom
again. Determined to find him, Jane started to
look for the lake in the darkness. An hour
later she was too tired, so she lay
down on a rock and fell asleep.
It was
daybreak when Jane woke up. It was a foggy day.
Climbing down the rock, she heard
the
sound of the stream
, so she walked
towards the water. Suddenly she heard someone’s
voice. To
her great joy, it was Tom! He
rushed to her wildly and hugged her tightly. Their
cry of happiness
broke the silence in
the forest. After several minutes, when the fog
was swept by the wind, Jane
figured out
everything: last night she walked here
accidentally. Tom recognized her by the yellow
blouse in the morning. Most amazingly,
it was their car that Jane slept on rather than a
rock.

Sara Savick remembers one special
Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents
gave her
a baby duckling in a yellow
basket.
“Mom
said later that she bought the little
duck because she felt
sorry for
it,” recalled Sara.
The
people at the pet store colored the feathers pink
for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.
Sara’s mother really didn’t think the
baby duck would survive very long. But to her
surprise,
Pinky grew and got stronger
and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a
healthy, hungry duck
with
white feathers.
“We
fed
Pinky
oatmeal,
cooked
and
uncooked,
and
small
pieces
of
vegetables,”
said
Sara.
Pinky lived inside the
house with Sara and her family. She specially
fancied taking baths with Sara.
Everyone treated Pinky as a family
member.
But just when everything
appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk”
came. Sara’s Mom
and Dad sat her down,
explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to
live a normal duck life, with
other
ducks.
It
was
not
natural
for
ducks
to
live
indoors
with
a
family,
her
father
told
her.
He
added Pinky needed to
swim in ponds and do all
the same
things that ducks in the wild do.
Sara
started to cry, knowing what was going to happen.
Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky
to
a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond
with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would
have the chance to live a natural life
and Sara could still visit her.
The big
day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box
and drove to the park. Sara said
that
Pinky did
not look happy; maybe Pinky
was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

答案:
Everyone
was
sad
when
they
left
Pinky
at
the
pond,
even
Sara’s
father.
But
he
tried
to
convince
Sara that Pinky was fine. Walking towards the car,
Sara looked over her shoulder and
saw
Pinky standing alone. The other ducks were
swimming around in circles, looking at Pinky. To
Sara, it seemed that they were trying
to identify the strange animal. They didn’t
recognize Pinky
as a duck. Worried
about Pinky, Sara dreamed of Pinky being bullied
by other ducks the whole
night .
The next morning, when looking out of
the kit
chen window, Sara couldn’t
believe her eyes!
There was Pinky,
happily walking around on the grass. Thrilled at
what she saw, she kept asking
herself,”
How did she make it?” After all, it was
two miles away and he managed to walk
back
through the city street.
Incredible! But her parents drove Pinky back to
the pond again regardless
of her
request. The following morning, there was Pinky
again on the grass! Seeing Pinky again,
her
father,
waving
his
arms
about
wildly,
moved
his
lips
without
saying
anything.
Meanwhile,
Sarah, overjoyed, hugged Pinky tightly,
tears streaming down her cheeks.
