Today, the technology that is being
developed for cell phones is
surprising. Soon our cell phones will
be able to do things that we
thought
impossible or not even thought of at all.
When picturing the future,
there are quite a few things that we
woul
d love our cell phones
to be able to do. Let’s take a look at the
ones that are likely to be in the next
generation of cell phones. Cell
phones
of the near future will be able to start and
unlock cars, turn
lights on and off in
houses, make payments(
付款
),
work as computers.
This sounds too good
to be true, right? Fortunately, this future is
just
over the horizon; you won’t wait
too long. New technology for phones is
being developed to realize eye
scans(
扫描
) and fingerprint
scans as new
“unlock your phone”,
so
you needn’t worry about
information being
stolen.
What do I want my pone to be able to
do? I want it to be special.
For
example, I will shout to my phone across the room
“Give me
directions to the market” and
it pulls up the directions and sends them
to my printer. Is it possible? Yes.
Maybe someday cell phones will be
able
to change into robots and walk our dogs and clean
our houses too.
Who knows? In the last
30 years we have gone from hardly knowing what a
cell phone was to surfing the internet
with excellent cell phones.
It is hard to believe that technology
is advancing as quickly as it
is, with
no end in sight. In 5 years the technology of
today will be a
thing of the past, and
the world won’t look back one bit.

India has many festivals, with some
celebrations that last for
weeks.
However, none of them come even close to Holi,
India’s most
colorful and fun festival.
Celebrated on the day following the full moon
this year’s festival happens
to
be on March 19th.
As with most India festivals, this one
also has many different folk
stories.
Most of the them center around the success of good
over evil.
The most popular one is
about a king, who hates his son Prahlada for
loving the creator of the Universe-Lord
Vishnu. When every attempt to
stop him
fails, his sister, Holika believed to be immune
to(
免于
) fire,
joins in the effort by inviting the
young boy to sit with her inside a
huge
fire. Helped by the power of Lord Wishnu, Prahlada
escapes safely,
while the evil Holika
is burned to death. To remember this event, huge
outdoor fires are lit in the nigh
before Holi in order to clean the air
of evil spirits and to celebrate the
death of the evil.
So
what’s so great about this day? While there are
some
fun
parades(
游行
) and
folk songs and dance performances, the most fun of
all
is walking to the streets and
splashing(
泼洒
) people with
water guns and
dry colors and even
covering them with entire buckets of colored
water.
On this day, everything and
everybody is fire game, no matter how old or
how young. At about midday, the
splashing comes to an end and people
living close to oceans or
rivers usually take a bath in the water to
clean themselves
before going home to a delicious home-
made big dinner and a well-
deserved
short sleep, following this full day of fun and
activities.

The phone
rang on the Friday before the first day of school
at La
Canada High School. It was a
recording of our
principal(
校长
) Sounding
serious, she said that school was
cancelled on Monday and would be put
off until Tuesday. This was because of
the fire in the La Canada-
Flintridge
area and my school was being used as a
shelter(
避难所
) for
those whose houses were threatened.
On Monday evening, I was
preparing for my big day. My red backpack
was filled with new notebooks. Then the
phone rang. Again a recording of
the
principal told me to stay at home. I could feel my
anxiety growing
inside of me. When was
school going to start?
Finally is was Wednesday-the real first
day of school. I walked
onto campus
feeling nervous even though I had walked on the
same grounds
for two years because the middle school
was next door. Everything looked
and
felt different in high
school-the middle school building looked
like an old memory.
I looked at my schedule. The first
period was German. I took a deep
breath
as I opened the door to my first class. Our German
teacher was
very friendly. Though I was
excited that I would get to know people put
of my grade, I was a little scared
too. I didn’t know how juniors acted.
They might be nice but then again they
might be bullies(
恃强凌弱者
)
。
The
fourth period used to be the time to have lunch
back in middle
school, but not anymore.
We have one more period before lunch. When I
finally got to meet my friends to eat
lunch once again, I felt happy.
The
familiar place and people brought back memories of
last year as we
caught each other up in
the summer.
After lunch, I
went to my English class.

Have you heard of the term
“tweenager”? It’s the new expression
being used in the UK to describe kids
at either 8-12 or 10-13 years old.
Why
are the media suddenly referring to kids in this
way?
Well, more and more
companies are beginning to create products and
services for tweenagers. The Disney
Company sells the Hannah Montana TV
show, music and film to tweenagers and
their parents. The High School
Musical
serie
s of films is also intended for
tweenagers. So, it’s all
about sales,
which tells us tweenagers must have move money,
freedom and
influence upon their
parents than they’ve ever had before.
Most kids in the UK today
get more pocket money than before.
Parents have more money to give their
kids, since parents are having
fewer
children on average than in the past. In addition,
the divorce
rate(
离婚率
) in the
UK is continually rising and parents spend less
time
with their children than they used
to, so many of them try to compensate
by buying presents for their children.
You may wonder how
tweenagers have more freedom than before. Well,
UK kids are much more familiar with
media and computers, through which
they
learn more about life and the world.
UK tweenagers never used to be worried
about spending money on
clothes and
fashion accessories(
饰品). Some of them
think it’s very
important to look
fashionable. So what does tweenager fashion look
like?
It’s lots of bright colours ,
particularly pink. There are usually
plenty of accessories.
Surely none of
the above is a good thing, is it? Can it really be
healthy for us to encourage kids to be
like adults at such a young age?
Are we
stealing childhoods in return for money? Well, I
think the UK
government should make
strict laws preventing companies from marketing
their products and services to
children.
is the main
reason why the term “tweenager” came out?

What is your friend
lifespan? It is how long you remain in
friendship with someone until you live
away from each other for some
reasons.
Some people remain friends for a lifetime, but
some do stay
apart. So among those
friends you have made, who is your best friend? Is
your best
friend in junior school still your best friend
now? Or you
have lost touch with each
other since you went to different high schools.
Perhaps you have another best friend
now. However, the best friends in
our
lifetime are often our old friends.
Girls usually are good at keeping in
touch with old friends. They
usually
make friends for life, and they even share their
secrets with
their best friends. But
for a man , usually his drinking partners become
his close friends.
But there is a saying that “Old is
Gold”. Usually your childhood
friends
and school friends are the only friends you will
ever have for
your lifetime. Your
colleagues, your drinking partners, or club
friends
will come and go, and when you
are in need of help, your old friends
will always stand by you. Even if you
call your high school friend after
15
years of not calling and ask him for a favor, he
will most probably
give you a hand. He
might not even think that you are calling after 15
years, and that is for asking a favor.
He will feel so good hearing your
voice
that he will do anything he can to help you. Then,
why do we
forget them? Why do we forget
to call them on their birthdays? No matter
how long our friend lifespan would be
for new friends, we should always
try
to keep in touch with our old friends.
of the following is TRUE

The Mississippi River flows down the

from the north

states along the Mississippi.
In Louisiana, engineers are working to
keep floodwaters away from
two big

New Orieans and Baton

Hurricane

protect
river towns in two other
states, Kentucky and Illinois. But fifty-two
thousand hectares of farmland were
flooded as a result.

A big question that keeps coming up
