road construction is an important cause of environmental


degradation, particularly in mountainous regions. however, re-


establishing vegetation cover at the construction site can


mitigate these problems, particularly on steep roadside slopes.


in the present study, we developed two new planting


techniques to increase vegetation cover on these slopes, in


which planters fill the holes in air bricks (i.e., bricks with large


holes that pass through the full depth of the brick) with soil,


then plant grass or herbaceous species in the soil. two


variants of this technique (one in which the air bricks form a


stairstep pattern, and another in which they form a smooth


slope) were tested in an area with a warm climate near


shennongjia (hubei province) between 2006 and 2008. the new


planting techniques promoted root growth, the development of


a continuous vegetation cover, and the production of


merchantable seeds compared with the conventional planting


technique. this suggests that the air brick technique is more


suitable for the study area, where the natural soils are thin, and


may prove suitable for similar areas elsewhere in the world.


the provisional results, based on 2 years of research, suggest


that the new techniques represent a potentially valuable


alternative for vegetation restoration, landscape conservation,


and road maintenance/management in mountainous zones


during and after highway construction. the techniques have


strong potential for use in other areas. in addition, they


provide a good example of using ecological



engineering to increase vegetation cover on steep roadside


slopes.

there is an increasing need for new and greater sources of


energy for future global transportation applications. one


recognized possibility for a renewable, clean source of


transportation fuels is solar radiation collected and converted


into useable forms of electrical and/or chemical (hydrogen)


energy. this paper describes methods for utilizing and


combining existing technologies into systems that optimize


solar energy collection and conversion into useful


transportation fuels. photovoltaic



(pv)-electrolysis (solar hydrogen) and pv-battery charging


systems described in this paper overcome inefficiencies


inherent in past concepts, where dc power from the pv system


was first converted to ac current and then used to power


electrical devices at the point of generation, or fed back to the


grid to reduce electricity costs. these past, non- optimized


concepts included efficiency losses in power conversion and


unnecessary costs. these drawbacks can be avoided by


capitalizing on the unique feature of solar photovoltaic devices


that match their maximum power point to the operating point


of an electrolyzer or a battery charger without intervening


power transformers. this concept is illustrated for two systems


designed, built, and tested by general motors for fueling a fuel


cell electric vehicle and charging an automotive propulsion


battery. based on this research, we propose a scenario in


which individual home-owners, businesses, or sites at remote


locations with no grid electricity, can capture solar energy,


store it as hydrogen generated via water electrolysis, or as


electrical energy used to charge storage batteries. such a


decentralized energy system provides a home refueling option


for drivers who

a multi-regional integrated energy systems model is


developed to assess the economic impact of hydrogen fuel cell,


hydrogen internal combustion, and battery electric


technologies on the economy of new zealand. base case


results suggest that a hydrogen fuel dominant vehicle fleet


offers economic savings over a conventional fleet but requires


the largest sequestration capacity as 75% of hydrogen fuel


production is derived from fossil fuel. when the oil price is


varied from us$$120 to us$$240 per barrel in 2030, and the


carbon tax varied from us$$30 to us$$90 per tonne of co2


equivalent, the change in
