There is no
doubt that my grandfather is the most important
person in my life. He was more than just
my grandfather: he was my teacher, and,
I'm
16
to say, my
friend.
There was no safer
place than his
17
when I was a child. I could watch scary
movies sitting there,
and he would
18
my eyes when there was
something really frightening. He taught me how to
19
,
such as noodles and pizza.
I remember, at age five,
20
on a chair by the stove as he taught me
how to
make fried eggs. He would often
talk about his mother, whom he loved, having him
stand on a chair stirring
butter when
he was no more than three years old.
He was warm, loving, and
firm. No matter what came his way, he always
21
it with no more than
a shrug. His deep faith carried him
through what life had to offer and pulled him out
of poverty.
My
grandfather loved baseball. He always watched
games on television and
22
explained to us
what was going on in the game. When he
turned 90, my cousin Bill gave him an
autographed(
签名的
) photo
of his favorite player. He was very
23
with the present and he
almost couldn't control his
24
.
He
just
wouldn’t
slow
down
.
Some
people
have
a
small
garden
in
their
backyard.
25
my
grandfather had a small
backyard surrounding his huge garden! There he
would
26
many tomatoes
that
were
delicious
and
very
27
with
us.
He
always
had
something
to
do
and
it
was
always
done
well.
Whenever anything was
28
,
it was taken to my
grandfather. And he would fix it.
It's as if he just woke up one morning
and decided it was
29
and within a few weeks this amazing man
passed away. Father of three, grandfather of
three, friend of
countless people, this
man touched and
30
all of us and we are better
because of him.

Before dawn
(

worn
-
out slippers
(
破拖鞋
) went back to bed.
Tramper hurried
in front of them and
lay down on the sofa. There the King found him,
circled by worn
-
out
slippers, sound
asleep.
“Well?” the King asked. You might think
that Tramper told the King about what he had seen,
but no. He
had enjoyed the salmon
(
三文鱼
) so much that he was
hoping for a second supper.
“Two more
tries,” said the King. “That’s all!”
The
next night, the princesses brought Tramper turkey
and a cup of tea for his supper. He ate up the
turkey but drank no tea. Instead, he
gave the palace parrot his tea and it fell off its
sleeping place, sound
asleep.
The princesses
and Tramper fell asleep, too—or so it seemed.
Later that night … the distant sound of
silvery music began. The 12 princesses
jumped out of bed, into the wardrobe
(
衣柜
), and ran across the
garden of ruby roses, through the
orchard (
果园
) of diamond
fruit and up the glass steps into the castle.
Tramper followed them with the magic
scarf over his head.
Again the elves
(
精灵小矮人
) were waiting. Again
the princesses danced and danced until their
slippers
