Chinese in a
foreigner’s eyes
Every day,
my interactions with Chinese people prove what I
already know to be true about them.
My
first impression in coming to China was that
people were kind and very welcoming to me as a
foreigner. They treated me well and
were very __21__ . I've had a few negative
experiences
during the past 4 years,
but, that's not the majority of people in China.
The majority of people are
kind,
considerate, caring and giving. This is proven to
me often.
I think about when
I first got here, of how impressed I was that
people would __22__ seats on the
bus
for older people and foreigners (like me) to sit
down. How people would invite me to their
homes for dinner and sometimes for
lunch. How people would bring me gifts, especially
parents
of my students. I got gifts of
tea and moon-cakes. How so many invited me out to
eat at
restaurants and __23__ them
paying for the meal. How others would invite me to
teach English in
various places and
were always willing to __24__ my schedule and
needs.
I'm quite aware that
recently there has been a lot of news about rude
behavior on airplanes and in
other
public places by Chinese people. I know that the
government has even created a blacklist of
Chinese travelers who will be __25__
from going anywhere due to their rude behavior. I
know
that the government warns Chinese
tourists about stopping __26__ behavior that is
unacceptable
in other countries. They
don't want any further __27__ due to the behavior
of their citizens. I've
experienced
some very cruel behavior by such people in a few
__28__ experiences I've had here.
I've
had some experiences that made me question why I
was here.
There is the
reality of good and bad behavior in every country.
It seems that some of the bad
behavior
of people is a bit more open here in China. But,
there is the bright and positive side of
Chinese people that keeps me wanting to
stay here and __29__ my time and efforts in making
a
difference in the lives of Chinese
children. When I __30__ the good and the bad, the
good far
outweighs the bad. If it
wasn't so, I'd do the easy thing and just go home,
back to America. Life
there is easy and
very comfortable. Plus, my family is there and I
could be close to them every day.
But,
I've chosen to stay here in China.
This week, I will __31__ my contract
with the school I teach at near my home. I made
the
decision to stay here. It wasn't a
hard decision even __32__ the very bad experiences
I've gone
through recently. I love
China and more importantly, I love the people
here. That's how I see it. I
hope to
__33__ many more wonderful friendships and great
memories here in the years to come. I
will continue to do all I can to use
what skills and knowledge that I have to work to
make a
difference in China and in the
world.

Bed racing is becoming more popular in
certain areas of the US. A bed race is a
competition
where teams of people push
bed along a __34__ route. The route often goes
through the middle of
a city or a town.
The __35__ teams attempt to roll their beds along
the route faster than anyone
else.
However, there are not just any beds! Racing beds
often have very big wheels and
competitors sometimes paint them in
some very interesting ways.
The teams build their own beds and
practice for weeks before the race. __36__, race
organizers often have firm rules about
building and racing beds. For example, the bed
must be a
certain size, they can’t have
engine, and they must have four wheels. In
addition, there must be no
more than
six people __37__ the bed and only one person can
sit in the bed.
As long as
the teams follow the rules, they can use their
__38__ for everything else. Some
beds
are covered with flowers. Other beds look like
crazy boats. To __39__ the fun, people often
wear strange and unusual
clothing.
On race days,
large crowds of spectators come to cheer for their
favorite team. These
members
of the community usually give money to their
favorite team. However, the money
doesn’t go to the team members. It goes
to organizations that help people in need. In the
past beds
races they have raised lots
of money to provide health care for children and
to help homeless
people. At the end of
the race, teams are often listed in a chart. Most
of these teams don’t even get
a prize

where relationship-building is
a fundamental part of business life, a staggering
40 billion pounds
of marketing
expenditure goes to corporate __41__ annually.

some, corporate entertainment is merely an
expensive and perhaps unnecessary luxury. To

Commerce International,
did indeed
__45__ ‘sweetening’ their most valued clients
frequently international terrorists and
drug barons-with shopping sprees in
London and __46__ lines of credit at Las Vegas
casinos. But
this is a million miles
away from an everyday business breakfast at the

the Savoy.
