If
you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably
think of places connected
with ancient
art
and culture, historical buildings
and monuments. And of course, many of these are
on the World Heritage List
(WHL)(
世界遗产名录
). But the WHL
contains a lot of sites
that are not so
obvious. Let’s look at a few
of them.
Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used through the
centuries as a prison, a hospital and a military
base. But it’
s probably most
famous as a maximum- security prison for political
prisoners
in
the
twentieth
century.
Nelson
Mandela
was
one
of
its
most
famous
residents.
The
WHL
says
it
represents

of
democracy

and
freedom
over
oppression and
racism(

Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty
and the mountains have many interesting
geo-logical formations. But it is also
an area of small farms. People there still
use a type of agriculture that used to
be common in mountainous areas of Europe but
has almost completely disappeared in
modern times.
The city of Brasilia,
Brazil
Brasilia is a capital city that
was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls

In
the

Olympics
there
were
no
real
team
sports.
Then,
slowly,
a
few
team
sports
joined the program. Foot-ball and
hockey were the first team sports introduced into
the Olympics in London in 1908. Then in
1936, at the Berlin Olympics, the Germans
brought in handball and the Americans
had basketball accepted as an Olympic sport.
It often happens that the country that
introduces a new sport into the Olympics
then
goes

to
win
the
gold
medals.
In
1904,
at
the
Olympics
in
St.
Louis,
the
Americans
introduced boxing
and won all seven events. Five horse riding evens
were introduced
into the 1912 Stockholm
Olympics, and Swedish riders won four of them. And
in 1964,
at the Tokyo Olympics, two
sports which
are
popular in
Japan were introduce:
judo(
柔

) and volleyball. The
Japanese won all three gold medals in the judo,
and also won
the first women's
volleyball competition. Some new sports have
recently been added
to
the
Olympics.

Dr Dian
Foss
ey, one of the world’s leading
women scientists, had a remarkable
work
—
she devoted her life
to protecting and studying the mountain
gorillas (
大猩猩
) of
Africa
—
has proved highly
effective and has resulted in the
steady (

increase of this most endangered great apes.
Fossey made her first trip to Africa in
years later, she returned to
Africa to
begin a long?term study of the mountain gorillas.
She set up camp in the
Democratic
Republic of Congo but moved to Rwanda because of
political reasons in
established her
“Karisoke” Research Centre camp on September
24,1967.
Fossey

were to study gorilla ecology
(

organization.
She
found
that
in
order
to
achieve
this,
she
needed
to
recognize
individual
gorillas,

.By
copying
gorillas’
behaviour and sounds, Fossey began to
gain their trust, and in 1970 an adult male
gorilla she had named “Peanuts” reached
out to touch her hand.
Close
observations over thousands of hours enabled
Fossey to gain the
gorillas
’
trust and bring
forth new knowledge about their behaviour. Stories
and photographs
of her work were
published in
National
Geographic
Magazine
and elsewhere.
In 1977, one of
Fossey
’
s favorite gorillas,
Digit, was killed by poachers and
she
established the Digit Fund to help raise money for

When I was growing up, I had an old
neighbour
named Dr Gibbs. He didn’t
look
like any doctor I’d ever known. He
never yelled at us for playing in his yard. I
remember
him
as
someone
who
was
a
lot
nicer
than
most
of
the
adults
in
our
community.
When Dr Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he
was planting trees.
His house sat on
ten
acres, and his life’s goal was to
make it a forest.
The good
doctor had some interesting theories concerning
plant care and growth.
He never watered
his new trees, which flew in the face of
conventional wisdom. Once
I asked why.
He said that watering plants spoiled them so that
each successive tree
generation would
grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things
rough for them
and weed out
(
淘汰
) the weaker trees early
on.
He talked about how watering trees
made for shallow roots, and how trees that
weren’t watered had to grow deep roots
in search of moisture. I took him to mean
that deep roots were to be treasured.
So
he
never
watered
his
trees.
He
planted
an
oak
and,
instead
of
watering
it
every
morning, he’d beat it with a rolled?up
newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked
him why
he did that, and he said it was
to get the tree’s attention.
Dr Gibbs passed away a couple of years
after I left home. Every now and again,
I walked by his house and looked at the
trees that I’d watched him plan
t some
twenty?five years ago. They’re
extremely tall, big and
robust since
they have deep
roots now. However, the
trees in my garden trembled in a cold wind
although I had
watered them for several
years.
It
seems
that
adversity
(
逆境
)
and
suffering
benefit
these
trees
in
ways
comfort
and ease never
could. I stood there deep in thought.
