It
was a hot Chicago day in August 1982 when
Mike
’
s fire-fighting crew
(
消防队
)
tried to
manage a fire in a building.
“
It was
35
to put out the fire because
of
the strong
wind,
”
says Mike. By the
time the
24-year-old fireman arrived
most of
the people had
36
left the
blazing building. Suddenly, a woman came running
up to them shouting,
“
My baby, where is my
Kris?
”
The woman explained
that she had left her 7-year-old son
alone while she went shopping. Mike
made his way back up to the building. He could see
a little boy
37
on the floor.
“
I
didn
’
t even have time to
think if he was alive or dead, I just grabbed
(
抓住
) him and
38
out.
”
Mike heard
the floor the sound of the floor above
crumbling(

left the building. The
people broke
into

from the smoke, Mike knew he was still
alive. Mike was a hero, but little did
he know how his decision would

Two weeks after the building fire, Mike

in touch,

with Mike

s
kidney(
肾脏

ill and he needed a
donor(

Mike was on
his deathbed, he knew he could
44
repay him. He
said to him,
“
I

ve
got two kidneys,
and you can have
45
.
”
The operation
was a perfect success.

Mike
says we
’
re even
now,

What: Silent Dinner Parties (SDPs) were
dreamed up by artist Honi Ryan as a student in
Germany in
2007. The SDP is a normal
dinner party, with one huge exception: Guests are
asked not to use their voices,
not to
read or write, to try to make as little noise as
possible, and to keep doing that for at least two
hours.
Ryan says,
“
It changes all the rules
that we have in social
situations.

D. Call her up.
C
bandage
Pulling
off
a
bandage
is
so
unpleasant,
and
for
certain
patients,
it
’
s
also
dangerous.
Babies
and
the
elderly have weak skin, and pulling
away bandages and medical tape can lead to serious
injuries (
伤害
). In
fact, each year, medical tape causes
about 1.5
million injuries
in the US alone.
“
This is a problem that all
doctors and nurses know
well,
”
says
Jeffrey Karp, a professor at Harvard
Medical School.
“
They are waiting for new
inventions that will not cause
injuries.
”
That
’
s why Karp
and
his lab are working on an
improvement to make fewer injuries when bandages
are removed.
Traditional medical tape is
simply something sticky on a backing, but
Karp
’
s invention has a
middle
layer (
层
).
This extra layer takes the most force of removing
the tape, which avoids injuries. When
it
’
s time
to pull
away the bandage, it
moves
right off. All
that
’
s left is
a small print that can be easily
covered or
simply rolled off the skin.
Karp
’
s tape
isn
’
t his only invention in
medical technology. He wrote an article about a
surgical (
外科
)
bandage that could hold fast wounded
parts of an operation. Even better, this bandage
disappears over time,
meaning that
doctors never have to go back to remove it. If
Karp
’
s pain-free bandages
come into being as
well as his earlier
breakthrough, future patients will be much
luckier.
53. When do usual bandages
cause injuries to patients?
A. When
they are kept on.
B. When they are pulled
off.
C. When they are put on.
D. When they are stuck hard.
54. How many layers are there in
Karp
’
s invention?
A. One.
B. Two.
C. Three.
D. Four.
55.
What is the greatest advantage of
Karp
’
s surgical bandage?
A. It doesn
’
t
need to be pulled off.
B.
It can hold fast wounded parts.
C. It
makes operation much easier.
D. It can be used as
people
’
s skin.
