campaigns
to

it
and
student

voted to end the mechoneo completely.

It's
often
said
of
British
people
that
they
are
very
aware
of
each
other's
social
rank. Britons can
usually work out a fellow countryman's background
from the way
they
speak
or
dress,
and
may
even
treat
them
differently
based
on
this.
But
although
this

truer

it
is
today,

that
they

it.
The
comic
play
Pygmalion
(19

,
by
the
Irishman
George
Bernard
Shaw
(185
6
—
1950)
,
is
a
famous
exploration
of
the
importance
of
social
rank
in
British
society.
The main story of the play concerns a
working class girl, Eliza Doolittle, a
flower seller from London. Two upper
class gentlemen try to see if they can get
Doolittle
to
appear
like
an
upper
class
lady
after
sending
her
for
elocution
lessons.
Professor
Henry
Higgins
,
a
language
expert,
says
it
can
be
done;
his
friend
Colonel
Pickering says that it's so, Higgins
sets out to teach Eliza how
to
“
speak
properly
”
.
Of course
,
Eliza
isn't a lump of clay; she has her own will. She
can see that
it' s in
her best interest
to go
along with Higgins' plan
to “improve
herself”.
She wants to
be able
to
sell
flowers
in a shop rather than on the street.
After the
training,
Eliza
proves
that
a
flower
girl
can
pass
herself
off
as
a
lady
at
a
ball.
She is a triumph(
赢家
)
,
and Higgins has won his
bet.
But what happens next? Eliza has
her future to worry about. She may be able
to fool the upper class into thinking
she's one of them, but she isn't really one
of them.
Shaw
seems
to
be
telling
us
that
social
rank
is
about more
than
the
way
someone
talks
—
it's about
wealth and whole experiment proves the idea that
accents
and
classes
are
very
superficial(

The
ways one
speaks
and

are
only
markers

class.
The
class
system
itself,
however,
is
something
completely
different.

What
can we learn about speaking and dressing from
Paragraph 1?
A
.
They determine
Britons' social rank.
B
.
Britons are
stricter in them nowadays.
C
.
Britons no
longer care about them.
D
.
They could
affect others' opinion of a person.

.Which can replace the
underlined word “elocution”?
A
.
Dress.
C
.

B

D

7
.
What happens to
Eliza Doolittle during the experiment?
A
.
She is forced
to give up selling flowers on the street.
B
.
She is
unwilling to participate in the experiment.
C
.
She is thought
of as an upper

class lady at

D

She

Which of the
following would Shaw probably agree with?
A
.
One can enter
the upper class after receiving training.
B
.
People should

C

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Friends should always be honest with
you, right? So when they lie, it can be
really
hard
to
a
friend
who
lies
isn't
always
trying
to
hurt
you.
Why
does
this happen?
They want to protect your feelings.
One
of
the
biggest
reasons
friends
lie
is
simply
to
avoid
hurting
your
feelings.
Some people don't
understand the difference between being gently
honest with
a friend and being so
straightforward that they leave a verbal choose
to avoid these in the form of a lie.
What
you
can
do:
Encourage
your
friends
to
be
straight
with
you.
No
matter
what
their
answer
is,
let
them
know
you
value
it.
If
you
get
angry
with
them,
they
won't
feel comfortable when telling you the
truth again.
They feel embarrassed.
Sometimes friends will lie about things
in their life because they are too
embarrassed to admit the truth. Maybe
they are going through a rough time and they
just don't want you to know about it.
What
you
can
do:
Avoid
trying
to
badger
your
friend
to
tell
you
what's
d,
make
it
clear
that
you
are
there
for
them
when
and
if
they
are
ready
to talk.
They just don't
want an argument with you.
Perhaps your
friends know that if they tell you the truth,
you'll get angry
with them. Avoiding
conflict is not always healthy for a friendship
because it
allows problems to grow
over you have a bad temper
(
脾气
), your friends
might
try
and
avoid
getting
into
an
argument
with
you
and
instead
just
tell
you
what
you want
to hear.
What you can do: Make sure
that if a friend tells you something unpleasant,
you don't overreact.
Consider what's being said
and why
your
friend is
telling
you
this. If you do end up
arguing, do it in a respectable way.

I just finished reading a
story about a school administrator who was once a
middle school
teacher in
a large American had a
life?changing experience
that I can
identify with.
After dinner one
evening, she was waiting to get on the elevator
and when the
doors
opened,
she
was
face
to
face
with
a
former
student
who
she
had
made
leave
school.
The student was not
allowed to return and now, several years later,
she was faced
with the same student.
He had brought a BB gun to school.
There were zero tolerance rules in places
such as the school. A BB gun, though
not a deadly weapon, could still do a lot of
bodily harm and perhaps it could be
dangerous. The fact is, the school was not a
place for it to be brought. The student
was expelled (
开除

not to come
back.
She
and
the
student,
immediately
recognized
each
other
and
he
offered
a
pleasant
greeting
to
her
as
he
stepped
out
of
the
elevator.
He
had
in
fact
joined
the
military
academy and was
about to take the SAT to enter was thankful that
his
life had not gone in a different
direction and that he wasn't in jail. He had a
positive outlook on his life and a plan
to pursue something good in his future.
Yesterday, I was in a grade 1 high
school class teaching TOEFL
was
sitting in the first row. I noticed before class
that Tony had slightly kicked
a
desk
and
was
obviously
upset
about
something.I
also
know
that
he
has
a
girlfriend
in the class and
I quickly concluded that they'd had an argument. I
know that it
is silly of him to act
that way or perhaps even have a girlfriend at that
age.
Nevertheless,
he
did
so
and
this
little
drama
was
unfolding
even
before
class
began.
