Reading
Comprehension (30 points)
Directions:
There are 3 reading passages in this
part. Each passage is followed by some questions
or
unfinished statements. For each of
them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and
D). You should
decide on the best
choice and mark the corresponding letter on the
Answer Sheet
with a single
line
through the center.
Passage One
A lot of people are their own enemies.
They regard themselves as unlikely to succeed in
college and
often feel that there have
been no accomplishments in their lives. In my
first year of college especially,
I saw
people get themselves down all too quickly. There
were two students in my class who failed the
first
test
and
seemed
to
give
up
immediately.
From
that
day
on,
they
walked
into
the
classroom
carrying
defeat
on
their
shoulders
the
way
other
students
carried
textbooks
under
their
arms.
Both
students hang on until
about mid-term. When they disappeared for good, no
one took much notice, for
they had
already disappeared in spirit after that first
test.
They are not the only people in whom I
have seen the self-doubt do its work. I have
really wanted
to
shake
them
by
the
shoulders
and
say
:
“You
are
not
dead.
Be
proud
and
pleased
that
you
have
brought
yourself
here
to
college.
Be
someone.
Breathe.
Hope.
Act.
”
Such
people
should
not
use
self-doubts as an excuse for not
trying. They should pull themselves together and
get to work. They
should start taking
notes in class and trying to learn. Above all,
they should not give up without even
trying.
31. When
the two students dropped out, on one took much
notice because _________.

class

didn
’
t get on well with

rest of the class
D. they had long lost hear in class
performance
32. According to the
passage, the two students failed in their study
because of their ________.
A. self-doubt
B. shyness
C.
prejudice
D. laziness
author thinks
that the two students should_________.
A. learn from
other students
B. try hard
before giving up
C. give up their
college education
D. feel happy because they are in
college
34. The phrase
“
get themselves
down
”
(Para. 1, line 3)
probably means _________.
A. avoid danger
B.
waste time
C.
lose confidence
D. tell lies
35. The
sentence
“
Both students hang
on until about mid-term
”
(Para. 1) tells us that_________.
A. they
didn
’
t take part in class
activities
B.
they didn
’
t finish their
study that term
C. they didn
’
t
study well
D.
they didn
’
t take notes in
class
Passage
Two
I remember quite clearly the first time
I was really shaken by my
wife
’
s intuition.
We were looking for a second-hand car,
and I had been much taken by a rather nice drop-
head
with a well-cared-for appearance.
“
Well, she runs
nicely,
”
I told my wife
after the try-out.
“
Good
start-up, the engine sounds sweet,
low
mileage and the right price. What do you
think?
”
“I
don
’
t like
it.
”
“
Why
not?
”
“I
don
’
t know. There is just
something about the salesman that I
don
’
t
believe.
”
A few weeks
after we had bought another car elsewhere, I
happened to find out the history of the
drop-head. It had been seriously
damaged in a crash before we saw it, and been
cleverly done up. The
car was, indeed,
a very bad risk.
Of all the
things about women that their husbands do not
understand, perhaps the biggest question
is this: How can she often be right
about things of which she has absolutely no
knowledge? How does
a
woman
’
s intuition work? What
is this strange power that tells her exactly when
her husband isn
’
t
working late on business, however
honest he pretends to be? Is it guesswork, or some
sixth sense that
men
don
’
t have?
36.
When was the
“
first
time
”
the husband felt
“
really
shaken
”
by his
wife
’
s intuition?

When he
learned about the history of the drop-head.
B.
When he realized she knew so much about
cars.
C.
When his wife spoke about the salesman
D.
When they
bought another car.
37.
What does a person
’
s
intuition refer to according to the passage?
A.
The ability to
make a quick decision.
B.
The ability to pick out the best one
among a number of things.
C.
The ability to know something by using
on
e’
s feelings.
D.
The ability to see though things.
38. Why
didn
’
t the man know that the
car was damaged at first?
A.
He was not careful enough.
B.
It had been
skillful repaired
C.
The salesman only tried it out smoothly
D.
The damage was
not serious at all
39. What answer does
the writer give to the question of a
woman
’
s intuition?
A.
It is a
special kind of knowledge
B.
It must be the
sixth sense.
C.
He doesn
’
t really
answer the question
D.
It is simply a blind guess
40. From the
passage we learn that the salesman was ________.
A.
honest
B. helpful
C.
kind
D. cheating
