“
Have you ever told your
story before?”
“
No.”
“
16
?”
“
No
one ever asked.”
Dave I say
wanted to change that. In 2003, he set up a
recording booth in Grand Central
Station and
17
the StoryCorps Project. I
say had learned, through his work as a documentary
radio
producer,
that
a
microphone
makes
people
ask
questions
of
others
that
they
18
wouldn’t ask. I
say reflects
in his book Ties That Bind: Stories of Love and
Gratitude from the
First
Ten
Years
of
Stor
yCorps:
“We
can
19
the
most
meaningful
poetry
in
the
words
and
stories
of
the
ordinary
people
around
us,
20
we
just
have
the
courage
to
ask
meaningful
questions and the patience to
21
closely to the
answers.”
Asking meaningful
questions requires 22
because asking is such a
countercultural
(
反
传统的
)
activity
in
our
culture
of
telling,
observes
Edgar
Schein
in
his
recent
book,
Humble
Inquiry: The Gentle
Art of Asking Instead of Telling.
Our
problem-solving
culture
23
people
who
know
things
and
tell
others
what
they
know.
In
this
culture,
having
to
ask
is
regarded
as
a(n)
24
of
weakness
or
ignorance.
Asking
briefly
gives
the
other
person
25
in
the
conversation
and
makes
you
seem
26
.
Those with the most 27
tend to tell more often than ask, and
those who ask are 28
viewed as naive
(
无知的
) or annoying or both.
Case in point: Just last week, someone said her
boss told her not to
29
so many
questions during meetings. He insisted,
“
It makes it
seem
as if you don’t
30
what you’re
doing.” Yet the primary
31
of
asking, according to
Schein, are that
we generate better ideas and make fewer 32
in judgment.
Asking good
questions 33
courage, patience, and, as
Edgar Schein says, skill and art.
He
says
a
question
34
have
“the
skill
and
the
art
of
drawing
someone
out,
of
asking
questions
to
which

During my first year at Hotchkiss, my
advisor recommended the math team as my winter
co-curricular activity
(
课程辅助活动
), but I did not take
her advice. It seemed too academic to
be interesting! Instead, I chose
wrestling (
摔跤
).
Although wrestling did prove to be
interesting, it gave me sprains
(
扭伤
) in both my wrist
and my ankle. So in my second year, I
decided to try something less physically
competitive
–
the
math team.
The math wing
was nearly empty 15 minutes after the last class
had ended, and I walked to
my first
math team meeting at the end of the hall. Although
I had suspected it a little, I was still
surprised to find the room filled with
East Asian and Indian students
–
no white or black students
at all.
I had always
thought that an all-Asian society in the US would
be boring or unproductive;
after all, I
came to the US to learn more about a foreign
culture. However, friends from my math
team soon became not only the group of
people with whom I was most comfortable, but also
a
group from whom I learned a lot.
The very first meeting started off with
a math game that made everyone feel relaxed and
broke the ice. After our orientation
meeting (
介绍会
), we began to
meet nearly every evening,
except on
Saturdays, to work on American Mathematics
Competition problems individually.
We
then discussed them in groups that were divided up
according to our mathematical skills.
Whenever someone in a group had
difficulty doing a math problem, the group would
stop and
explain it until that person
understood. When we encountered
(
遇到
) a hard problem that no
one
could solve, we usually got
together and worked on the problem on the
whiteboard so that we
could share our
ideas and perspectives (
观点
).
Outside of math team meetings, our team
also gathers to work on other projects or go to
