Winter with no children
EVERY afternoon after school some
children played in a giant’s
(
巨
人的
) garden. The
giant was away. It was a beautiful garden with
grass,
flowers and some peach trees.
But
the
giant
returned
and
was
angry
to
see
the
children
in
his
garden. He chased them
away and said: “Don’t come back!” He built a
high wall around the garden.
Spring came and the Earth awakened
(
醒来
) from its winter sleep.
But
there
was
still
deep
snow
in
the
giant’s
garden.
The
giant
said:
“Spring is late this
year,” the giant said. But spring became summer
and
summer passed into fall. Fall gave
golden fruit to every garden, but to the
giant’s, she gave none.?
All year round, snow covered the
giant’s garden. One day the giant
awoke
and heard a wonderful sound. It was a bird
singing. He looked out
of his window.
What did he see?
Every
tree
had
a
little
child
sitting
in
its
branches
(
树枝
).
The
children
got
back
into
the
garden
through
a
hole
in
the
wall.
The
trees
were
so
happy
to
have
the
children
back
again
that
they
had
covered
themselves with blossoms.?
“How
selfish
I
have
been!”
the
giant
said.
“I
will
knock
the
wall
down and my garden will
be a children’s playground.”
After
many
years
the
giant
grew
old
and
weak.
He
watched
the
children play
their games
and admired his garden. “These children are the
most beautiful flowers of all,” he
said.
