Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions:
In
Section A, you will hear ten short conversations
between two speakers. At the end
of
each
conversation,
a
question
will
be
asked
about
what
was
said.
The
conversations
and
the
questions
will be spoken only once. After you hear a
conversation and the question about it, read
the four possible answers on your
paper, and decide which one is the best answer to
the question
you have heard.
1.
W: Well,
there
’s so much junk around. Let’s
clear out the old stuff.
M: OK. I’d like to start the New Year
with a tidy office, too.
Q: Whatwill they probably do next? (B)
2.
W: Jack. Why
don
’t you come skiing with us this
weekend? We’ve got room in the car.
M: Are you serious? I can’t
wait to pack up.
Q: How does the man feel about the
skiing trip? (D)
3
M: Hello.
How can I help you?
W: My backpack was
stolen on the bus just now. I got on the bus at
the North Railway Station
and put the
backpack on the empty seat next to me. When I
looked up a few minutes later, it
was
gone.
Q
:
Where
does the conversation probably take place? (B)
4.
W:
I
’
m sorry to disturb you on
a Sunday, Mr. Thompson. There were reports of loud
noises
early this morning.
M: Oh, that
’ll be my
daughter.
She was practicing with her
band. I told her not to start too
early. I
’
ll have
a word with her about it.
Q
:
Why is the
woman talking to Mr. Thompson? (A)
5.
M:
Let’s have the party
at the beach. We can swim and play
beach volleyball.
W: But
what if typhoon is coming? That will make
conditions at the beach very dangerous.
Q: What does the woman
mean? (C)
6.
M:
Don’t you sometimes feel isolated,
studying online?
W: I actually work better on my own. I
would get distracted working with others.
Q: What can we learn about
the woman?
(D)
7.
W: How I envy you as a
self-employed cook. You can do as much or little
as you want, when
you want.
M:
But on the other side,
it’s not very well pa
id or secure.
Q: What does the man think
of his situation? (B)
8.
M: Oh no, not another meeting chaired
by Jefferson! He knows nothing about marketing!
W: It’s one thing talking
the talk, but we need action.
Q: Whatkind of person is
Jefferson?
(C)
9.
M: Helen, do you know
that Jenny has decided to retire this year?
W: It is wise of her to
quit the rat race after the serious health scare.
Q: What can we learn from
the conversation?
(A)
10.
W:
I’ve been
making my own lunch to take to work, but I keep
leaving it at home. What a

Section B
Directions:
In Section B, you will hear two short
passages and one longer conversation, and you
will be asked several questions on each
of the passages and the conversation. The passages
and the
conversation
will
be
read
twice,
but
the
questions
will
be
spoken
only
once.
When
you
hear
a
question, read the four possible
answers on your paper and decide which one would
be the best
answer to the question you
have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are
based on the following passage.
Unless
you are one of those rare people with an excellent
memory, you probably have trouble
remembering
the
names
of
people
you
have
just
met.
This
problem
can
be
frustrating
and
embarrassing. Fortunately, there are a
number of ways you can help yourself overcome this
human
tendency.
Before
examining
the
methods
to
help
yourself
remember
people's
names,
let's
look
at
the
reasons
why
we
are
so
forgetful
in
the
first
place.
Experts
put
a
lot
of
the
blame
on
a
lack
of
motivation and interest. Simply put,
remembering names is just not high on the list of
priorities for
most people. Another
reason is that putting a new face to a name is
more complicated than we
think, which
leads to another problem. We usually don't make
the effort to commit new names to
memory immediately. Not only that, but
when meeting someone new, we may be thinking about
other things and not be paying enough
attention.
All of this means that we
need to take measures to avoid the embarrassment
of forgettinga
person's name. One good
method is to say a person's name when you greet
them and also repeat it
silently to
yourself a few times. This type of repetition is
vital to learning practically any type of
skill.
Using
a
memory
device,
such
as
associating
individual
names
with
something
else,
also
helps. For example, if
someone's name is Ben and he is tall,
you can label him (to
yourself, of
course)
meet
them will assist you in
recalling their names. While forgetting names
isn't a matter of life or death,
it
is
uncomfortable.
Putting
these
tips
into
practice
will
help
you
better
avoid
this
social
discomfort.
Questions:
11.
Why do we forget names according to the
experts? (A)
12.
What tip is
given to help avoid forgetting names? (B)
13.
Which of the following
can be inferred from the passage? (D)
Questions 14 through 16 are based on
the following passage.
On11 February 2020, visitors to the
2039 Pizza Restaurant in Peckham, London, were
able to
try a pizza from the year
pizza hadn't actually travelled back in time, but
was made by
people looking ahead to the
future.
An organization of Young
Scientists called The Big Bang UK Fair challenged
a futurist called
Jackson, to design
the pizza of the future, in order to show how
science can help us make food
more
sustainably.
Despite

it
