A SPEECH ABOUT MY HOMETOWN

My lovely hometown is located on the south shore of an island. It' s a small

town with onlyabout 9, 000 people and an area of about 3. 8 square miles.

First, I want to talk about the people in the neighborhood. Generally

speaking, peopleare very nice here, especially in summer. I feel that in

summer everyone is in a great mood, and very generous. For example, one

summer afternoon, I was at the gas station filling up mycar and was short of

money. Generously an old gentleman gave me the money to pay the gas

attendant.

That' s the type of people you can expect from my greatest

part about the town, in my opinion, is the location. The Great Bay is

fiveminutes away from my house and it' s fantastic. Another great thing is

how close everybody livesto each other. With it being such a small town, all

my friends live five minutes away, whichis a great advantage to me and

everyone else. Lastly, the nightlife is great. On any Saturdaynight every bar

is packed with people, so there' s always something going on.

So far I' ve explained the good side of my hometown, but there are also

some boring thingsabout it. It is great in summer, but it is a different story in

winter. When winter comes around, the town turns into a ghost town. This is

because there is nowhere to go. The only thing wehave is a shopping

center. It would be nice if we had a few more options to choose from.

Lilian Hanson, a college students, expects to graduate in about two years.

What makes Mrs.

Hanson different from her classmates is her age

73 years. She has been

studying at college,a few courses at a time, for 27 years.

When Lilian Hanson graduated from high school, she went to the bank to

borrow money forthe further education. The banker gave her no

encouragement. He didn't think that a countrygirl should borrow money to go

to college. He thought she should be at home doing work in thehouse or

around the farm. So Lilian Hanson went home and raised a family of nine

children insteadof going to college. Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of

getting a higher education. Whenher children were grown, she tried again.

She finds the hardest part of going back to school at her age is to sit in class

for longperiods of time. Because she is not as quick as she used to be, Mrs.

MY VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE

My volunteer work helps me grow up. It has made me more aware of the

difficulties otherpeople go through and made me appreciate the simple

things we have in life. It enables me,as an adult, to become more confident

and to realize the difference I can make.

I now have new career aspirations and the confidence to take forward these

new ideas, sinceI started mentoring at the Open University and gained

experience of working with young students.I' ll go on to do a teaching

assistant course and looking to go into volunteering teaching oryouth work

in the future.

My research project will be to build a spatial web application. It was inspired

by thevolunteering I do for another not-for-profit organization.

My volunteering at an animal shelter is neither connected to my studies nor

to my careerinterests. I do it purely for pleasure,

satisfaction and the feeling that I can help ' s made me a

WHY VOLUNTEER

Volunteering is a great way to get work experience, and may be one of the

most valuableexperiences of your life. You learn new skills by trying new

jobs. Better yet, you can meetpeople who can give you guidance and

possibly help you to find a paid job later on. Employerswill be impressed that

you took the initiative to learn new things. You can learn how a

charitableorganization works. Best of all, you will be taking action to promote

what you think is importantand probably be helping someone else along the

way.

of considering volunteering as something you do for people who are not as

fortunate asyourself, begin to think of it as an exchange. Consider that most

people find themselves inneed at some point in their lives. You may be the

person with the ability to help today, buttomorrow you may be someone who

needs others' help. Even now you might be on both sides ofthe service

cycle

maybe you are a tutor for someone who can' t read, while last

month thevolunteer ambulance corps rushed you to the emergency room.

Volunteering also includesself-help. So if you are active in your

neighborhood crime watch, your home is protected whileyou protect your

neighbors' homes, too. It' s a double win

your community or cause

benefitsfrom your work and you benefit from your experiences. In a word,

adding your effort to thework of others makes everyone' s lives better.

The first year of school in America, known as kindergarten, usually begins

between theages of five and six. Among rich countries such a late start is

very strange. President Obamabelieves it is an economic and social

problem; his education secretary goes as far as to saythat it is morally

wrong. This statement has some support, as it is clear from research

intovocabulary that youngsters from poor families enter kindergarten well

behind those from richfamilies

a disadvantage that usually lasts a

lifetime. Children from households on welfareknew 525 words by the age of

three, while the children of professionals had mastered 1, -school

can help close this gap. So in a speech last month, Mr. Obama called for

apartnership between the federal government and the states to expand it to

every American later became known that every meant those who

come from families with incomes of up to 200%above the poverty line

equal to an income of $$47, 000 for a family of four.

Some critics say that sending children to school at the age of four does not

work. Theevidence suggests otherwise. For example, on March 20thnew

results were announced from a studyof 9 to 11 year olds in New Jersey.

This report found that disadvantaged children who had attendedpre-school

had better literacy

读写能力

, language, maths and science skills.

And two yearsof pre- kindergarten were better than one.

Some studies also follow the effects of early learning over lifetimes, such as

its effecton crime rates and other factors that may eventually burden society.

Critics have singled outa government scheme called Head Start, created in

1965, which provides poor households witha range of services including

school-based early education.
