Mom wanted only one thing for
he
r birthday. “Can you find me another
copy of this song?”
she asked, and
handed me a worn-out cassette tape. I knew exactly
what was recorded on it: My
Redeemer. I
heard the song played at least a thousand times
while growing up. After so many
years,
the cassette tape was too worn out to be used. I
promised her I would find a replacement.
My Redeemer became Mom’s favorite song
after my younger brother Tim was killed by a drunk
driver in 1973. The only thing that
helped her calm down was the soulful sound of My
Redeemer
from the local radio station.
We recorded it on a cassette tape so
she could listen to it any time she wanted but
none of
us knew who the soloist
(
独唱者
) was. These days, I
thought the song would be easy to find out. I
went home and searched the Internet.
Several songs with that title popped up, but none
of them
was the one Mom loved. I got
frustrated.
Mom’s birthday drew near
and then one day, I was driving home, listening to
our local radio
station. A familiar
tune came on. It was My Redeemer! As soon as I
could, I phoned the station. I
got a
line on the soloist, who was called Alan Parks. I
typed his name into Google and found his
home number in South Carolina. Minutes
later, I was telling him how much his recording
meant
to Mom. He offered to ship two
CDs out to me personally. I gave him my address.
“Red Lion, Pennsylvania?” he said. “Do
you know the Logans?” “They are our neighbors!”
“I’ve been friends with them for 25
years,” Alan said. “They’ll be at my concert at
York Gospel
Chapel on April
17th. Would you and your mom come too?”
We sure would. Mom was excited to
hear
Alan sing My Redeemer to her, live in
concert
—
on the evening of
her 87th birthday.
24. Why was the song
My Redeemer so important to the author’
mother?
A. It could relieve
her sad and painful mood.
B. It
reminded her of the love from her husband.
C. It was given to her by a very
important friend.
D. It was the only
thing that the author’s brother left
her.
25. What does the
underlined part “got a line on” in Paragraph 3
mean?
A. talked happily with
C. made a request of
B. thought a lot about
D. got information about
26.
What can we learn about Alan Parks from this
passage?
A. He lived in Red Lion,
Pennsylvania.
B. He turned out a kind
and warm-hearted musician.
C. He
offered to give the author two cassette tapes.
D. He would sing for the author’s mom
on the radio station.
27.
Which of the following is most surprising?
A. Alan Parks and the author lived in
the same neighborhood.
B. Alan Parks
happened to get to know t
he author’s
mother.
C. The author’s
mother went to the concert on her
birthday.
D. The author’s
mother became good friends with Alan
Parks.

Most
commuters in Munich, Germany, spend hours stuck in
traffic or trying to squeeze into
one
of
the
overcrowded
subway
trains,
every
morning.
But
for
40-year-old
Benjamin
David,
commuting is actually
a relaxing experience. Every day, he jumps into
the Isar River and swims
two kilometers
to his workplace in Kulturstrand.
Benjamin David used to be one of the
thousands of M
ü
nchners
trying to make their way to
work on
busy roads and cycling paths, but two years ago he
decided that he needed to find a
simpler
alternative
and
the
Isar
River
seemed
like
the
obvious
answer.
It
flows
right
past
his
apartment
in
Baldeplatz.
But
instead
of
paddling
on
a
raft,
Benjamin
decided
to
swim
to
work
instead.
Every morning, Benjamin leaves his
apartment in Baldeplatz, crosses the street and
jumps
into the Isar River. He has to
swim two kilometers to his office in Kulturstrand,
which usually takes
him about half an
hour. Once there, he dries himself with a towel,
puts on a T-shirt and waits for
his
colleagues to get through the heavy traffic, by
enjoying a cappuccino at a cafe.
The
swimming
commuter
found
the
perfect
way
to
keep
his
things
dry
while
he
is
in
the
water
—
a special
bag that is not only waterproof, but also fills up
with air when you roll it shut.
It’s
called
a
“Wickelfisch”
and
it
was
designed
by
a
start
-up
in
Basel,
Switzerland,
where
swimming to work has
actually become a big
trend. It holds
Benjamin’s laptop, paperwork and
clothes dry, and allows him to simply
float down the river if his arms get tired.
Depending on the season and temperature
of the water, Benjamin will put on a simple pair
of
shorts
or
a
wet
suit,
but
he
always
wears
rubber
sandals
(
凉鞋
)
to
protect
his
feet.
People
throw all kinds of things in the river,
from glass bottles to bicycles, and the sandals
really help
him.
Right now,
Benjamin David is the only person in Munich who
uses the Isar River for his work
commute,
but
with
traffic
becoming
worse,
he
expects
some
of
his
fellow
Miinchners
will
be
joining
him for a daily swim soon.
28. Why does
Benjamin David decide to swim to work?
A. Because he doesn’t know how to
paddle on a raft.
B. Because
he wants to relax himself by commuting.
C. Because he wants to change a way to
avoid busy streets.
D. Because he loves
swimming.
29. Which of the following
about Benjamin David is the CORRECT order?
①
to jump into the Isar river
②
to put on a T-shirt
③
to cross the street
④
to leave his apartment
⑤
to swim two kilometers to
his office
⑥
to enjoy a
coffee
A.
④①③⑤②⑥
C.
⑥①⑤②④③
B.
②①⑤④③⑥
D.
④③①⑤②⑥
30. Benjamin David always wears rubber
sandals in order to
.
A. keep warm
B.
provide protection
D. swim faster
C. avoid being wet
31. Which of the following can best
describe Benjamin David?
A. Creative,
careful and brave.
C. Strong, healthy
and kind.
D
B. Cautious, lonely and
stubborn.
D. Lovely, friendly and
humorous.
Feeding knowledge directly
into your brain, just like in sci-fi classic The
Matrix, could soon
take as much effort
as falling asleep, scientists believe. Researchers
claim to have developed a
simulator
(
模拟装置
)
which can
feed information directly into a person’s brain
and teach them
new skills in a shorter
amount of time, comparing it to “life imitating
art”.
Researchers
from
HRL
Laboratories,
based
in
California,
say
they
have
found
a
way
to
improve learning, only on
a much smaller scale than seen in the Hollywood
film. They studied the
electric signals
in the brain of a trained pilot and then fed the
data into novice subjects as they
learned to pilot an aeroplane in a
realistic flight simulator.
The
study,
published
in
the
journal
Frontiers
in Human
Neuroscience,
found
that
subjects
who
received
brain
stimulation
via
electrode-embedded
head
caps
improved
their
piloting
abilities and learnt the task 33
percent better than a placebo group
(
对照组
).
“Our
system
is
one
of
the
first
of
its
kind.
It’s
a
brain
stimulation
system,”
explained
Dr.
Matthew Phillips. “It sounds kind of
sci
-
fi, but there’s large
scientific basis for the development of
our system. The specific task we were
looking at was piloting an aircraft, which
requires a synergy
(
协同作用
)
of
both
cognitive
and
motor
performance.
When
you
learn
something,
your
brain
physically changes.
Connections are made and strengthened in a process
called neuro-plasticity. It
turns out
that certain functions of the brain, like speech
and memory, are located in very specific
regions of the brain, about the size of
your finger.”
Dr. Matthew
believes that brain stimulation could eventually
be used for tasks like learning
to
drive,
exam
preparation
and
lan
guage
learning.
“What
our
system
does
is
that
it
actually
targets those
changes to specific regions of the brain as you
learn,” he added. “The method itself
is
actually quite old. In fact, the ancient Egyptians
4,000 years ago used electric fish to stimulate
and
reduce
pain.
Even
Ben
Franklin
applied
currents
to
his
head,
but
the
rigorous,
scientific
investigation of
these methods started in the early 2,000s and
we’re building on that research to
target and personalize a stimulation in
the most effective way possible. What we found is
that
brain stimulation seems to be
particularly effective at actually improving
learning.”
32. Which of the
following can be the best title of the passage?
