Riding the bus in India can be a
difficult experience. First, getting on the bus is
a difficult problem.
Usually, you have
to jump on, all the while looking for a
grip(
握把
) among a crowd of
others who
are also trying to get on.
Once you get on, it doesn’t get any easier. Indian
buses are crowded, dusty
and
uncomfortable. You seldom find a place to sit;
most of the time you are filled into the
aisles(
通
道
),
holding a grip someplace.
Today I was
on a very busy bus. I was standing in the aisle
when the seat right next to me opened up.
Usually when this happens there is a
mad fight to fill the seat. But when one opens up
in front of
me, I like to first look
for someone in need of a break. There was a young
guy with short hair and a
red
shirt
on
the
other
side
of
the
seat
for
whom
I
gestured(
做手势
)
to
take
it.
Surprisingly,
he
politely refused with a big smile. Then
I sat down.
Not more than 2 minutes
later at the next stop, an old woman walked
towards the seat. Feeling
encouraged by
the young man, I looked at her and gestured to ask
her whether she would like to sit.
She
nodded quietly, sat down and gave a quick “thank
you”.
As I looked for a new
place to park myself, I looked at the young man.
We locked eyes and smiled to
each
other. He knew I had passed on his small act of
kindness. I gave him a pat on the shoulder and
moved on.
60. Taking a bus
in India is considered to be uncomfortable because
.
A.
there are too many people taking the bus
B. there are not enough
seats on the bus
C. there is something
wrong with the bus
D. buses
travel much more slowly on the road
61. According to the
writer, when people find an empty seat on the bus,
they usually
.
A. feel relaxed
B. fight to fill it
C.
offer it to others
D. look for a
grip first
62. Why did the writer offer
the seat to the old woman?
A. The writer felt ashamed.
B. The writer would get off
the bus soon.
C. The writer was moved
by the young man.
D. The young man asked the writer to do
so.
C
Most
people agree that honesty is a good thing. But
does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk,
but can they lie in other ways? Can
they lie with their bodies and behavior?
Animal experts may not call it lying,
but they do agree that many animals, from
birds
to
chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool
other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them
survive.
Many kinds of birds are very
successful at fooling other animals. For example,
a bird called the plove
r sometimes
pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young.
When a
predator
(
猎食动物
)
gets
close
to
its
nest,
the
plover
leads
the
predator
away
from
the
nest.
How?
It
pretends
to
have
a
broken wing. The predator
follow
s the “hurt” adult, leaving the
baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay,
buries its food so it always has something to eat.
Scrub jays
are
also thieves. They watch where others
bury their food and steal it. But
clever
scrub
jays
seem to know when a thief is watching them. So
they go back later, unbury the food, and bury
it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way
to have babies without doing much work. How? They
don’t
make nests. Instead, they get
into other bird
s’ nests secretly. Then
they lay their eggs and fly away.
When
the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents
feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can
also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp
will give
its
hand
to
the
other.
When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the
chimps are friendly again. But an animal
expert once saw a losing chimp take the
winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too.
When chimps find food that they love, such as
bananas, it is
natural
for
them to cry out. Then other chimps come
running. But
some
clever
chimps
learn
to
cry
very
softly
when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t
hear them, and they don’t need to share
their food.
As children,
many of us learn the saying
her,
either.
A plover protects its young
from a predator by _______________.
A.
getting closer to its young
B. driving away
the adult predator
