I am trying to muster
(
鼓起
) the courage to____my
mobile phone to enjoy a more peaceful
and ring-
free life.
Can you imagine not having
your mobile phone? In our high-
tech,
in-
a-
hurry age, a
cell-
free
life is a hard
concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now
access the Internet, and many
people
feel the need to express their every thought on
their blog pages. If I gave up my
cellphone, people would think I was
mad.
I wish I had the
strength to toss away my technology. I have an
office phone, a home
phone
,
an e?mail and if
people want to contact me, they can. If I’m
out
,
people can leave a
message.
Do they really need to find me
24/7
?
However, I’m a bit like
Frodo in the movie Lord of the
Rings.
The power of the ring is too strong and I can’t
let it go.
Mobile phones have become necessary
tools in our busy life. For most people, they hold
all
contacts and many of us don’t write
up address books any more. The latest phones carry
our
music, pictures, movies and
everything else. We feel lost without this device
and when we do
misplace it, we feel cut
off from our fellow.
“Where
have you been
?
” said a
friend, who saw me a week after I lost my
cellphone, “I
tried calling you, but
you disappeared. You disappeared off the face of
the Earth.” See, when
you
don’t
have a mobile phone,
you don’t exist.
I’m not really going to toss my mobile
phone away, in fact. We humans are such social
animals and mobile phones serve us
well. So in 2009, I’ve decided not to serve my
mobile
phone. Like all machines, I can
always turn it off.

During the seasons of fine weather,
kids can play outside, happy and active. But
when winter comes around, it is wet,
windy and cold. Since they can't go outside to
play, kids
get restless and miserable.
Fun activities for kids are pretty much
necessary at that time of year, and they need to
be
kept entertained. One way to do this
is to have an indoor treasure hunt, where children
can look
for clues and then get to the
treasure. Treasure doesn't even need to be much,
because just the
activity is fun
enough.
Art activities are always fun,
and if you start off with some paper in different
colours, they
can draw shapes on the
back, cut them out, and stick them on the white
paper to make all sorts
of things.
Cardboard boxes, stuck together and then painted,
can be made into buildings or
robots.
You can keep all boxes in a bag in the loft. Then
you have something you can draw on
when
the weather is bad and the children need to play
indoors.
Dressing up is another fun
indoor activity. Why not read a book to them and
then ask them
to act it for you? That
can keep them busy and develop their imagination.
When you encourage
children to use
their imagination, you are giving them confidence
in themselves, in their own
creative
abilities; by suggesting they put on a play you
are encouraging them to work together
and develop teamwork skills.
The best way to help your kids have fun
when it is rainy outside is to let them come up
with some ideas. When you feel that
they are old enough, let them write their ideas on
a piece of
paper and you can pick an
idea that you find practical. That way every day
can be fun!

C

One of the United States's
social problems is the breakdown of
two-
parent family.
Today,
millions of American children grow up without
fathers. Too often, these children lack
the love and help they badly need and
which they would ordinarily receive from not one
but
two parents. In the old days,
American parents placed the needs of their
children above their
own. At present,
however, nearly one half of all new marriages end
in divorce (
离婚
), with
often troubling results for their
children. Worse, every year, thousands of teenage,
unmarried
Americans
become
mothers
outside
marriage, with generally
terrible results for the
mothers and
children alike and for American society more
generally. However, Chinese
continue to
value whole marriages. Tiffs is not to say that
Chinese marriages are all
perfect
—
they
certainly are not, judging from increasing rates
of divorce and extramarital
affairs
—
but the
willingness of Chinese to set aside their own
needs and stay together for the
sake of
the children is admirable and worthy of study.
Families, in whatever form they may
take, are important to Americans. If one was to
ask a
group of Americans what is
dearest to
them, the majority would say
“family”. And yet, so many
Americans
spend much more time at
work
—
that is, beyond the
formal forty-
hour
work
—
than
they do
with their own families. Obviously, the USA is one
of the most powerful in the world,
owing in large meas
ure to
“workaholism”. It seems to me that Chinese
generally find a better
balance between
work and family needs than many Americans do. I
don't see the number of
workaholics in
China that I do in the United States (or American
organizations in China ).
Instead,
average Chinese usually head home right after work
( in the office or field), have meals
together, and spend time with their
family members. What's more, Chinese try to make
more
time for grandparents, uncles,
aunts and cousins than many Americans; in many
cases,
multi-
generational
families live together. Of course, like many facts
of Chinese society, this is
all
changing; increasing numbers of “New Chinese” are
working longer hours and spending
less
time with their families than ever before. Still,
while Americans do value their loved ones.
I think we have something to learn from
the Chinese about finding the proper balance
between
B
.
different
D
.
convenient
work and family.
12
.
The main point
of the passage is ________.
A
.
family plays a
very important role in America
B
.
there is
something about family for Americans to learn from
China
C
.
a proper
balance between work and family needs to be found
for Chinese
D
.
the
Chinese have a proper balance between work and
play
13
.
According
to the passage, the American family value in the
past is that ________.
A
.
Americans love
their families more than their jobs
B
.
Americans often
set aside their children's needs
C
.
Americans have
a strong work desire
D
.
American
parents place the needs of their children above
their own
14
.
It can be
concluded from the passage that ________.
A
.
in the author's
eyes, the breakdown of the two-
parent
family in China will be more serious
than that in the US in the future
B
.
today young
Americans should reduce their material comforts
in the
interests of their
children's future
C
.
Chinese
marriage is said to be all perfect
D
.
at present,
nearly one half of all new marriages end in
divorce
in
China
15
.
What
does the author think according to the passage?
A
.
Children living
in one-
parent families badly need their
parents' love and help.
B
.
Children with
one-
parent need their parents' money
badly.
C
.
Chinese
value whole marriage more than before.
D
.
Work is dearest
to most Chinese.

The Invisible Door
If you're
still not getting hired, you might be running into
an invisible(
无形的
) door.
Invisible doors are things companies
want from new employees but don't list as job
requirements. Many companies have
special company cultures. Others are looking for
people
with very specific skills.

I
just come back from Britain last week. I was
luckily enough to be one of the student from
different countries to visit the UK
from Feb. 16 to 28. We paid a visit to many
places, like
London, Oxford or the Lake
District. I learned much about British culture and
history in
London, where was my
favorite. I also liked Oxford,
in
which I saw much more old buildings.
The Lake District was beautiful, but it
was pity that it rained heavily when they were
there. The
most excited thing for me in
the Britain was that I made a lot of friends
there.
