How often do you let other people like a bad driver, a rude waiter, or an angry boss, change

your mood?

Sixteen

years

ago

I

learned

a

lesson.

I

got

in

a

taxi,

and

we

took

off

for

Grand

Central

Station.

We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space

right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes, the tires made a loud noise, and at the

very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car.

I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other

car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting

at us. I couldn’t believe it!

My taxi driver

just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This

guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law

of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around

full of

garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to

dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.”

So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take

their garbage and spread it to other people.

I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump

it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well,

and move on.

21. What happened to the author on his way to Grand Central Station?

A. He was caught in a traffic jam. B. He had a fight with his taxi driver.

C. His taxi almost ran into another car. D. His taxi suddenly got a flat tire.

22. When the author saw his taxi driver smile and wave at the driver of the black car, he______.

A. got very angry

C. felt quite disappointed

D. praised him for his manners

2

3. The underlined part “the load” in the last paragraph

probably refers to _______.

A. the bad mood

B. poor habits

D. great pressure

C. waste materials

24. How did the author learn to deal with Garbage Trucks?

A. Fight back immediately.

C. Dump it on someone else.

B. Call the police for help.

D. Smile and move on.

B

A shopkeeper sent his son to learn about the secret of happiness from the wisest man in the

world. The boy walked a long way, and finally came upon the beautiful castle where the wise man

lived.

On entering the main room of the castle, the boy was quite surprised: tradesmen coming and

going, people chatting in the corners, and a small orchestra playing soft music. The wise man

talked with everyone, and the boy had to wait for two hours before it was his turn.

The wise man listened carefully to the boy

s explanation of why he had come, but told him

that he didn

t have time just then to explain the secret of happiness. He suggested that the

boy

look

around

the

palace

and

return

in

two

hours.

Meanwhile,

I

want

to

ask

you

to

do

something,

said

the

wise

man,

handing

the

boy

a

teaspoon

that

held

two

drops

of

oil.

As

you

wander

around,

carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill.

The boy began to walk up and down stairs of the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon.

After two hours, he returned to the wise man.

Well,

< p>

asked the wise man,

Did you see the Persian tapestries

(挂毯)

in the hall? Did

you see the garden that took the master gardener ten years to create?

The boy was embarrassed,

and replied that he had observed nothing. His only concern had been not to spill the oil.

Then go back and observe the wonders of my world,

said the wise man. The boy

picked up

the spoon and returned to his exploration of the palace. This time he observed all of the works

of art on the ceilings and the walls. When he returned, he described in detail everything he had

seen.

But where are the drops of oil?

asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon he held,

the boy saw that the oil was gone.

Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you,

said the wise man.

The secret

of happiness is to see all the wonders of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the

spoon.

25.

When the boy arrived at the castle, he

.

A.

received a warm welcome from the wise man

B.

had already missed his chance to talk to the wise man

A.

show him how to observe the wonders in the world

B.

teach him the secret of happiness

make him learn from his mistakes

27.

the drops of the oil on the spoon

probably refer

to

.

the beauty of one

s nature

the fortune a person possesses

C.

the responsibilities one has to take on

D. the great opportunities in life

28.

What would be the best title for the article?

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by

week

her

list

grew:

I

was

very

thin,

I

wasn

t

a

good

student,

I

talked

much,

I

was

proud,

and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to

my father with tears in my eyes.

He

To

surprise,

I

discovered

you

Poet

William

Stafford

once

said

that

we

are

defined(

定义

)

more

by

the

detours(

绕行路

)

in

life

than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I

discovered the deep meaning of his words.

For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in

nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially

when

I

was

alone

with

four

noisy,

restless

kids

who

hate

confinement(

限制

)

and

have

strong

opinions

about everything.

Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick

to the freeways and arrive tired.

But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip

to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made

the decision for me.

That

is

how

I

found

myself

on

the

road

with

four

kids,

a

baby

lamb

and

nothing

but

my

everlasting

optimism

to

see

me

through.

We

took

the

country

roads

out

of

necessity.

We

had

to

stop

every

hour,

let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back

in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.

We

explored

side

roads,

catching

grasshoppers

in

waist

high

grass.

Even

if

we

simply

looked

out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water,

it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(

见识

)

We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.

I

grew

brave

with

the

trip

back

home

and

creative

with

my

disciplining

technique.

On

an

empty

section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told

them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.

Some

road

trips

are

by

necessity

fast

and

straight.

But

that

trip

with

Banner

opened

our

eyes

to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a
