There are two things I have
alway
s wanted to do -- write and live
on a farm. Today I'm doing both. I am
not in E. B. White's class as a writer or in my
neighbors' league as a farmer,
but I'm
getting by
. And after y
ears
of frustration with city and suburban living, my
wife Sandy and I have finally
found contentment here in the
country
.

不属同一等级,作为农场主,我和乡邻也不是同一类人,不过我
应付得还行。在城市以及郊区历经多年的
怅惘失望之后,我和妻子桑迪终于在这里的乡村
寻觅到心灵的满足。

It's a self-
reliant sort of life. We grow nearl

in eggs, with
several dozen left over

honey
, and we cut enough wood to just

make it through the heating
season.

I had traveled here to Henson's last

北方去加拿大――逃奔自由之地。许多人和他一起在得雷斯顿这一带定居了下来。

Yet this stop was only part of a much
larger mission for me. Josiah Henson is but one
name on a long list of
courageous men
and women who together forged the Underground
Railroad, a secret web of escape routes and
safe houses
that
they
used
to liberate slaves from
the
American South. Between
1820
and
1860, as many
as
100,000 slaves traveled the Railroad to
freedom.

In
the house where I grew up, it was our custom to
leave the front door on the latch at night. I
don't know
if that was a local term or
if it is universal;
carried keys; the
last one in for the evening would close up, and
that was it.

小时候在家里,我们的前门总是夜不落锁。我不知道这是当地的一种说法还是大家都这么说;
不落
锁
的意思是掩上门,但不锁住。我们谁都不带钥匙;晚上最后一个回家的人把门关上,这就行了。

Those

over. In
rural areas as well as in
cities,
doors do not stay
unlocked, even
for part of an
evening.
那样的日子已经一去不复返了。在乡下,在城里,门不再关着

Suburbs and
country areas
are, in
many
ways, even
more
vulnerable
than well-patroled urban streets.
Statistics show the crime rate rising
more dramatically in those allegedly tranquil
areas than in cities. At any rate,
