Part II Reading
Comprehension
Directions: There are 4
reading passages in this part. Each passage is
followed by some questions
or
unfinished
statements.
For
each
of
them
there
are
four
choices
marked
A,
B,
C
and
D.
You
should decide on the
best choice and mark your answer on the Answer
Sheet.
Passage 1
Let
children learn to judge their own work. A child
learning to talk does not learn by being
corrected all the time: if corrected
too much, he will stop talking. He notices a
thousand times a
day the difference
between the language he uses and the language
those around him use. Bit by bit,
he
makes
the
necessary
changes
to
make
his
language
like
other
people’s.
In
the
same
way,
children
learning
to
do all
the
other
things:
they
learn
to
do
without
being
taught
to
walk,
run,
climb, whistle, ride a
bicycle, compare their own performances with those
of more skilled people,
and slowly make
the needed changes. But in school we never give a
child a chance to find out his
mistakes
and correct them for himself. We do it all for
him. We act as if we thought that he would
never notice a mistake unless it was
pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was
made to. Let
him work out, with the
help of other children if he wants it, what this
word says, what the answer
is to that
problem, whether this is a good way of saying or
doing this or not.
If it is a matter of
right answer, as it may be in mathematics or
science, give him the answer
book. Let
him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers
waste time on such routine work?
Our
job should be to help the child when he tells us
that he can’t find the way to
get the
right
answer.
Let
the
children
learn
what
all
educated
persons
must
some
day
learn,
how
to
measure
their own
understanding, and how to know what they know or
do not know.
36.
According to the passage, the best way
for children to learn things is by __D____.
A. listening to skilled people’s
advice
B. asking older
people many questions
C. making
mistakes and having them corrected
D.
doing what other people do
37.
Which of the
following does the writer think teachers should
NOT do?C
A. Give children correct
answers.
B. Allow children to make
mistakes.
C. Point out children’s
mistak
es to them.
D. Let
children mark their own work.
38.
According to
the writer, teachers in school should ___A___.
A. allow children to learn from each
other
B. point out children’s mistakes
whenever found
C. give
children more book knowledge
D. correct
children
’s mistakes as soon as
possible
39.
The passage suggests that learning to
speak and learning to ride a bicycle are ___B___.
A. different from learning other skills
B. the same as learning skills
C. more important than other skills
D. not really important skills
40.
Which of the
following best summarizes the main idea of the
passage?D
A. Teachers should correct
children’s mistakes as soon as
possible.
B. Children should
be able to find out the right answer with the help
of the teacher.
C. Teachers should tell
the children what to do and what to learn at
school.
D. Children should learn how to
measure their own work at school.
Passage 2
How often one
hears children wishing they were grown up, and old
people wishing they were
young
again.
Each
age
has
its
pleasures
and
its
pains,
and
the
happiest
person
is
the
one
who
enjoys
what each age gives him without wasting his time
in useless regrets.
Youth is a time
when there are few tasks to make life difficult.
If a child has good parents, he
is fed,
looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is
impossible that he will ever again in his
life be given so much without having to
do anything in return.
In
addition,
life
is
always
presenting
new
things
to
the child
---
things
that
have
lost
their
interest for older people because they
are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he
is not so
free to do what he wishes to
do; he is continually being told not to do things,
or being punished for
what he has done
wrong.
When the young man starts to
earn his own living, he can no longer expect
others to pay for
his food, his
clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants
to live comfortably. If he spends
most
of his time playing about in the way that he used
to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he
breaks the laws of society as he used
to break the laws of his parents, he may go to
prison. If,
however, he works hard,
keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can
have the great happiness
of building up
for himself his own position in society.
41.
People can
experience happiness if they __B____.
A. always think of the past and regret
it
B. value the present
C.
are no longer young
D. become old and
have much experience
42.
When people were young, they used to
__B____.
A. be in charge of many
businesses
B. have few things to think
about and take on
C. look after
their younger sisters and brothers
D.
face a lot of difficulties
43.
The pains of
children lie in the fact that _D_____.
A. no one helps them make right
decisions
B. they are often beaten by
their parents
C. they can not be
accepted and praised by others
D. they
are not allowed to do what they like to do
44.
Children are
usually happy because __D____.
A. old
people lose interest in them
B. they
are free to do wrong
C. they are
familiar with everything going on around them
D. things are new to them
45.
Which of the
following is NOT needed for a young man to be
happy?C
A. Hard work.
B. Being free from
troubles.
C. Wealth.
D. Health.
Passage 3
Faces,
like
fingerprints,
are
unique.
Did
you
ever
wonder
how
it
is
possible
for
us
to
recognize people? Even a
skilled writer probably could not describe all the
features that make one
face different
from another. Yet a very young child--- or even an
animal, such as a pigeon--- can
learn
to recognize faces. We all take this ability for
granted.
We also tell people apart by
how they behave. When we talk about someone’s
personality, we
mean the ways in which
he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make
that individual different
from others.
Like
the
human
face,
human
personality
is
very
co
mplex.
But
describing
someone’s
personality in
words is somewhat easier than describing his face.
If you were asked to describe
what a
‘nice face’ looked like, you probably world have a
difficult time doing so. But if you were
asked
to
describe
a
“nice
person”,
you
might
begin
to
think
about
someone
who
was
kind,
considerate, friendly,
warm, and so forth.
There are many
words to describe how a person thinks, feels and
acts. Gordon AlPorts, an
American
psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words
characte
rizing differences in people’s
behavior. And many of us use this
information as a basis for describing, or typing,
his personality.
Bookworms,
conservatives, military-type people are described
with such terms.
People have always
tried to “type” each other.
Actors in
early Greek drama wore masks to
show
the audience whether they played the villain’s
(
坏人
) or the hero’s role. In
fact, the words
“person”
and
“personality”
come
from
the
Latin
“persona”,
meaning
“mask”.
Today,
most
television and movie
actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell t
he ‘good guys’ from the
‘bad guys’
because the tow type
s differ in
appearance as well as in actions.
46.
The main idea
of this passage is __C____.
A. how to
distinguish people’s faces
B. how to describe people’s
personalities
C. how to
distinguish people both inward and outward
D. how to differ good persons from bad
persons
47.
The
author is most probably a __B____.
