No
one
can
change
the
weather.
Nobody
can
control
the
weather.
But
if
we
read
correctly
the
signs
around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the
weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting(
天气预报
).

For
many
centuries
and
in
all
countries,
people
have
studied
the
weather
and
tried
to
make
weather
forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. That many people feel their joints(
关节
) hurt is a
sign of wet weather. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or
stormy weather is
on the way
. If you see a rainbow(
彩虹
) during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather
will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine
weather will continue. If a fog(

) appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the
sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy
weather will probably come.
Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make
weather forecasting.
50. Which of the following can be used here to replace(

se ―
on the way
‖?

A. away

B. gone

C.

D. coming
51. When you see the stars twinkle clearly at night, the weather will be_________.

A. warm

B. rainy

D. cold
52. Which of the following signs can tell the weather will probably be rainy?

A. A rainbow appears in the morning.

After the main shake, quickly run out of the dangerous building for there will be small earthquakes. If you
are safe, remember not to

In March last year, the car I was driving was involved (

country road. I soon found myself at the center of a crazy activity, in the middle of doctors, policemen and
passers-by. A large can opener was used to get me out of my broken car and into an ambulance(
救护车

Over the next eight hours, I was taken to hospital, tested with X-ray and diagnosed (

neck. Knowing that I‘d been saved from death encouraged me throughout the long wait in the hospital and
helped me deal with the countless visitors.
Only after I was sure that the last friend had left, could I direct my energies inwards. Flying in and out of
my line of vision during my hospital stay was the Red Cross lady, a gentle presence in white who, from time to
time, came in to offer cups of tea. After the visitors had gone, she came up to me and checked if I was all right.
I found myself telling her everything about the accident, my fears for my family as a result of my injuries

Christmas
is
a
time
for
shopping.
But
I
think
those
of
us
who
live
in
large
ci
ties
in
Asia
would
be
cheating ourselves if we said this is the only time we are busy shopping. No, from Bangkok to Singapore, from
Shanghai to Manila, shopping

especially shopping in large centers

is a year-round activity.
Shopping centers
are good. They show Asia‘s surprising economic (
经济的
) growth, and how far we have
come in such a short time. For many of the older generation w
ho can remember a time when everyone lived in
villages and there was no running water, the air-conditioned centre means comfort, choice, luxury (
豪华
) and
better times.
Nowadays,
it
seems
our
usual
activities
happen
in
the
centre
—it‘s
where
we
shop,
eat,
watch
movies,
meet our friends or just generally walk around.
Further more, we have come to regard shopping centers as important landmarks or tourist attractions(

). Whole generations of Asians are growing up to think that, besides home and school, the shopping center is
the most natural place to be.
My idea about shopping centers is not that they are often big buildings that look quite different from other
parts in a city, or that they promote (
促进
) shopping at a time when our planet can hardly afford it. My main
idea about centers is that they don‘t really seem to make us happy. The large advertisements outside the sto
res
could make us think that if we only had this pair of jeans, or if we hung out at this café
drinking coffee, then
we
could
feel
more
successful.
But
once
we
buy
something,
we
only
want
to
buy
something
more

as
everyone already knows.
Shopping centers, even though they try to look as welcoming as possibl
e, can be unkind places. To make
us buy, they must make us feel that we are short of something, or that everyone else has something we do not
yet own. We must want to surpass others or at the very least to keep up. How can this thought always trying to
be cool bring us true joy?
The saddest thing is that the modern centre has stopped us from many beautiful, necessary and important
activities. We have no one to blame (
责怪
) but ourselves. Instead of shopping, we could be cooking, visiting a
nearby waterfall, going to the beach, reading a novel, taking a long walk, playing a sport, learning a dance or
visiting each other‘s homes.

Every time we have a spare piece of land, all we can think of building on it is yet another centre. Perhaps
instead, we should be building libraries, theatres, museums, sports halls, public swimming pools, parks

the
list is endless. We might even consider leaving t
hat land alone. This is something that the centre may have
caused us to forget

in order to be happy, we must create as well as consume (
消费
).

My
friend,
Victor,
is
a
zoo
keeper
in
the
National
Zoo.
His
work
is
very
interesting
but
it
is
hard.
Sometimes it is dangerous, too. Every morning the zoo keepers have to get up at five to prepare the food for
the animals. Each kind of animal is given special food. For example, the lions must be given meat; the deer
must be given grass and leaves; and the parrots must be given fruit and nuts. Sometimes some animals won't
let the others eat their food. If this happens,

each of them must be fed separately(
分离地
) .

Every
morning
each
cage must
be
washed
by
the
zoo
keepers. This
can
be
dangerous,
especially
with
lions and tigers. To make the work easier, the animals are locked in the sleeping compartments (
隔间
) while
the cages are being washed. When the animals are sick, the zoo keepers must look after them. Each sick animal
is kept in a separate cage and given medicine. Sometimes they must be given injections. It is not easy to inject
(打针)

a sick lion!
All the keepers live near the zoo. Each of them has a small house. There he lives with his family. They do
not have holidays on Sundays and public holidays. Instead, each of them has a day off during the week. Each
keeper has a holiday on a different day from that of the other keepers.

The most important job of the keepers is to look after the safety of the visitors. People must be prevented
from
doing
dangerous
things.
Many
people
have
been
injured
because
they
did
careless
things,
like
putting
their hands into the lion's cage.

31. What kind of food must be given to the animals like tigers, lions and bears?
A. Nuts.

B. Fruit.

C.
Meat.

D.
Grass
and
leaves.

32. Some animals must be fed separately because

.

B. they often quarrel with each other while eating
C. they always cause the zoo keepers much trouble
D. they won't let the others eat their food
33. When an animal is sick, it must be

B. put separately and taken good care of
C. given an injection
D. locked in a sleeping compartment
34. All the zoo keepers must work

.

A. seven days a week

B. on Saturdays
C. on special festivals

D. on weekdays
35. The underlined word
段落
) means

.

A. hurt

B. beaten

C. killed

D. caught

Father‘s Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother‘s Day. And just because
some Americans thought that if we had a Mother‘s Day, we should also have a Father‘s Day. Father‘s Day has
become important in North America. And shopkeepers found it was a good way to get people to buy presents
for their fathers, presents from their shops.

nt for your father. They even tell a
wife to buy a Father‘s Day present

not for her father but for her husband, even if he is not yet a father. And
they tell grandchildren to buy a Father‘s Day present for their grandfathers.

Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was
