When you are sick, your parents worry the most. Now, almost all Chinese people are worried
about one special “person”. It is Yutu, China’s first moon rover (月球车).
Yutu began operating from December after making a soft landing on the moon by Chang’e-3
lunar probe (月球探测器). It planned to “walk” around on the moon for three months while
doing scientific research.
However, on Jan 25, 2013, Yutu met some trouble. “Ah… I am broken,” said Yutu on its
micro blog. Scientists said that Yutu is experiencing mechanical problems.
One night on the moon is about 14 days on the Earth. During this time Yutu would not have
any sunlight to power its solar panels (控制板). Not only that, the lack of sunlight also brings
dangerously low temperatures – minus 180
o
C. So the rover needed to fold itself up to protect its
electrical components (零件). It’s like we humans sleep at night.
The mechanical problem might keep it from “sleeping” properly, and then Yutu could freeze
to “death”. Luckily Yutu woke up, Xinhua News Agency reported. But scientists are still
working hard to find out the cause of its problem.
Despite that Yutu’s condition may worsen, its work was anything but a failure. Yutu survived
a flight on the way to the moon. It successfully landed, walked around and used its instruments
for more than a lunar day (a lunar day is almost 30 days on the Earth).
