Compare and Contrast of the Education System
In the UK and China
Recently, more and more Chinese people go to England for further study, especially
for tertiary education. It seems that there is no download trend of the boarding number,
especially for the rich families. Whether the education system of U.K. is more
superior than that in China?
Education in both U.K and China divides into 3 stages including primary education,
secondary education and tertiary education. Before primary school study, 3-4 year
olds receive nursery education. Firstly, let’s look at primary education. Primary
education in U.K starts at the age of 4-5, and decide students into 2 sections. One is
infants’ school for the children aged from 5-7. Another one is called junior school for
the children aged from 7 to 11.
After primary school children move on to secondary school at the age of 11 and
they must stay until they are 16 because compulsory education provided by the state
takes place between 5-16. What’s more, there are 4 kind of school during secondary
education in U.K. Grammar schools divides students according to science and art.
Those public schools are funded by privates. Private schools are developed by the
tuitions. The majority of secondary schools in U.K today are called “comprehensive
schools”.
Tertiary education in U.K concludes universities and vocational school. By the end
of compulsory schooling at the age of 16, pupils take the GCSE, General Certificate
of Secondary education, and they can choose to leave school or continue to study
either in the same school or at a sixth form or further education college for another 2
years. Some students take 3 or 4 year academic subjects of their choice leading to the
GCE or General Certificate of Education at Advanced level as it is called. Others take
a vocational course. These will gain “Applied A levels” or an Advanced GNVQ
(General National Vocational Qualification).
When we focus on the education system of China, you will find difference. Chinese
students started their primary schooling at the age of 6. They begin school day at
September 1
st
and they have to start study at 7:30 in the morning in most of primary
schools. There is a long study hours in schools in China because students cannot leave
schools until 5pm.
After finishing 6 years study in primary schools, that is they are at the age of 12,
they move on to secondary education. Secondary education in China divides students
into 2 sections. Students spend 3 years in junior schools where they have to learn
about 9 subjects at all. The subjects consist of Chinese, mathematics, English,
geography, biology, physics, chemistry, politics and history. Then students spend
another 3 years in senior high schools. At this time, students will be divided according
to the art and science which is similar to grammar schools in U.K. Students bury
themselves in studying for these 3 years because they all desire to pass the National
College Entrance Examination. The scores that they made in the exam makes a
difference while the universities enrolling fresher. Therefore, students in senior high
schools are under great pressure and they often feel nervous before the exam.
When the tertiary education starts, a new life comes. Students spend at least 4 years
completing their undergraduate studies before they are awarded a first degree.
Universities provide students with advanced academic study in various fields. Also
there are colleges and institutes prepare students for specific jobs
I am interested in primary education between U.K and China. Teachers in UK pay
more attention to cultivate students’ innovation and make students’ minds filled with
questions instead of theory. Teachers in primary schools encourage students to finish
the task by independently. Chinese students began their memorizing knowledge from
their first schooling. We are taught to obey the disciplines and careful, that is breaking
the school rules is forbidden. Therefore, Chinese students are disciplined. In contrast,
students in U.K are more active or maybe sometimes noisy in class as their free
education system.
I believe that education of U.K has a better effect on children’s development. In
China, students are requested to sit in lines in the classrooms and listen to teachers
carefully. They have little time to think about what the knowledge is useful. But
students in U.K are able to sit wherever they love, and they ask questions and work
together to finish projects from primary education. In addition, students in U.K began
classes from 9 A.M and they prefer small amount of students study in one classroom.
In China, there are more than 40 students in one classroom. This is a large number so
teachers cannot focus on every student in class. What’s worse, they have to start class
at 7:30 in the early morning. Students in northern China have to go to schools in dark
and come homes in dark in winter because the daytime becomes shorter in winter.
Students are tired and stressful.
There is no doubt that education system in U.K is better prepare for students’ future.
Educators pay more attention to develop kid’s practice skills and cooperation abilities
and therefore, the outcome is obvious that students are more experienced and
adjustable in society. During the classes, teachers in U.K do a lot of experiments to
encourage kids to think instead of pouring down all the theory and knowledge from
books. Students in U.K follow their teachers to history museums if they are learning
history. They will follow their teachers to learn how to take a bus as a class. It is
practical and useful.
At last, I believe education system in China will make a progress if we absorb those
useful and superior examples from U.K. Lessening the homework stress on students’
shoulders is an effective way to develop their own interests on after class activities.
