Today, I'd like to talk about what happens when celebrity role models get behind healthy habits, but at the same time, promote
junk food.
Currently, there's mounting criticism of Michelle Obama's “ Let's Move! ” campaign, which fights childl
obesity by en couragi ng youn gsters to become more physically active, and has sig ned on sin ger Beyonc and basketball player
Shaquille O'Neal, both of whom also en dorse sodas, which are a major con tributor to the obesity epidemic.
Now there's a lot more evide nee of how powerful a celebrity — especially a professi onal athlete — can be in
in flue ncing childre n's behavior.
In a report published by the Rudd Cen ter for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale Uni versity, researchers studied 100 professi onal
athletes and their en dorseme nt con tracts.
The team focused on athletes since they are theoretically the best role models for active, healthy lifestyles for childre n.
After sorting the deals by category, they determ ined that among the 512 brands associated with the athletes, most
in volved sport ing goods, followed closely by food and beverage bran ds.
Sports drinks, which are often high in sugar and calories made up most of the food and drink deals, with soft drinks and fast food
filli ng out the rema in der.
Of the 46 beverages endorsed by professional athletes, 93% relied exclusively on sugar for all of their calories.
It's no surprise that high- profile athletes can in flue nce childre n's eat ing behaviors, but the scie ntists were able to qua ntify how
prevale nt these en dorseme nts are in the childre n's environment.
Advertiseme nts featuri ng professi onal athletes and their en dorsed products tend to get impressive exposure on TV, radio, in
print and on li ne.
And in 2010, the researchers reported that childre n ages 12 to 17 saw more athlete-e ndorsed food and beverage brand
commercials tha n adults.
One reas on any campaig n wants a popular celebrity spokespers on is because kids are attracted to them no matter what they
are doing.
We can't expect kids to turn off that admiration when the same person is selling sugar.
At best, kids might be con fused.
At worst, they'll think the messages about soda are the same as the messages about water, but those two beverages aren't the
same.
If children are turning to athletes as role models, it's in their best interest if their idols are consistent.
Con siste nt messagi ng of positive behaviors will show healthier lifestyles for kids to follow.
Questi ons 23 to 25 are based on the record ing you have just heard.
Question 23. What is the aim of Michelle Obama's campaign?
Questi on 24. What does research find about advertiseme nts featuri ng professi onal athletes?
Questi on 25. What does the speaker think kids' idols should do?

In the past few mon ths, I've bee n traveli ng for weeks at a time with only one suitcase of clothes.
One day, I was in vited to an importa nt event, and I wan ted to wear someth ing special for it.
I looked through my suitcase but could n't find anything to wear.
I was lucky to be at the tech no logy conference the n, and I had access to 3D prin ters.
So I quickly designed a skirt on my computer, and I loaded the file on the printer.
It just prin ted the pieces overni ght.
The next morning, I just took all the pieces, assembled them together in my hotel room, and this is actually the skirt that I'm
wearing right now.
So it was n't the first time that I prin ted clothes.
For my senior collection at fashion design school, I decided to try and 3D print an entire fashion collection from my home.
The problem was that I barely knew anything about 3D prin ti ng, and I had only nine mon ths to figure out how to print five fashi
on able looks.
I always felt most creative when I worked from home.
I loved experimenting with new materials, and I always tried to develop new techniques to make the most unique textiles for my
fashi on projects.
One summer break, I came here to New York for an intern ship at a fashi on house in Chin atow n.
We worked on two in credible dresses that were 3D prin ted.
They were amaz ing — like you can see here.
But I had a few problems with them.
They were made from hard plastics and that's why they were very breakable.
The models could n't sit in them, and they even got scratched from the plastics un der their arms.
So now, the main challenge was to find the right material for printing clothes with, I mean the material you feed the prin ter with.
The breakthrough came when I was introduced to Filaflex, which is a new kind of printing material.
It's strong, yet very flexible.
And with it, I was able to print the first garme nt, a red jacket that had the word
sweetheart's n ame.
So I think in the future, materials will evolve, and they will look and feel like fabrics we know today, like cotton or silk.
Questi ons 19 to 22 are based on the record ing you have just heard.
Question 19. What does the speaker say about the skirt she is wearing now?
Question 20. When did the speaker start experimenting with 3D printing?
Question 21. What was the problem with the material the speaker worked on at a New York fashion house?
Questi on 22. What does the speaker say about Filaflex?

. “ freedom
And actually, you can easily download this jacket, and change the word to something else, for example, your name or your
3D
