跳出标语译标语，现场见效最相宜

──中文标语英译的语句特点与现场效果

1. 标语英译的通病分析

标语英译的通病，大体可分三类：硬译，误译和乱译。

1.1鹦鹉学舌的硬译

例1：创一流服务，迎四海嘉宾。

改译：first class service to all guests.

例2：北岭旅游度假区是您的投资宝地。

原泽：beiling tourist holiday spending area?

上译以“电报译码”，逐字注音的方式来 译“度假区”，因而拖泥带水，
令人听了不舒服，看了很刺目。这和陆谷孙教授2005年8月6日在< br>凤凰电视台的世纪大讲堂上批评把“收银台”译成silver receiving
counter一样,实在离谱。

改译：beiling resort is a promising land for investment.

爱泼斯坦、林戊荪、沈苏儒在《呼吁重视对外宣传中的外语工作》
一文中指出: “死译”、“硬译”、 “字对字翻译”之所以不可取，就因为
这种作法违反了翻译的本质，违反了语言的规律，从而达不到交流
的目的，甚至造成误解。可见,标语翻译之道，不是机械式的对应复
制，而要根据原文的意思， 运用译文的语言优势，进行简明的表述。
有的时候，我们还要“跳出标语译标语”，即跳过标语原文的语 义表
述，译出标语深层的语用真意。

1.2 囫囵吞枣的误译

例3：创优秀旅游城市，为名城争光。

原译：build a china best tourist city to win honor for our
famous city.这是笔者的初稿译文。汉英词典也译“争光”为to win
honor for。笔者有 个习惯，译文出来之后，总怕有所不妥，或求同
行推敲，或向外宾请教。适逢有朋自澳洲来，于是趋前请 教。他问：

既是名城，这honor是原有的呢，还是以后才有?真是一语惊醒“囫囵”人。笔者马上从囫囵吞枣的误解中跳出来，作出令他称许的译文。

改译：build a top tourist city of china for the honor of our
famous city. 例4：弘扬体育精神，促进国际往来。

另外，细细咀嚼之下，“弘扬”与“促进”，可用“多枝共干”的译法,以
promote一词译之。 改译；promote sportsmanship and int’l
exchanges.

好的标语，总是很简洁凝练的。动手翻译之前，必须以逻辑 思维为
基础，即对原文的表象、概念进行分析、综合、判断和推理，才能
正确理解原文，得出准 确的译文。囫囵吞枣，则消化不良,不可能理
解和吸收原文的思想，译文就无从正确,或无法适用了。< br>
1.3 随心所欲的乱译

原译：the peoples of xx want to be an excellent travel city.

这是随心 所欲乱译的典型，用词不当，拼写有错不说，整个句子不
合逻辑，“人民”变成“城市”了。就是这条英 译标语，居然在南方一
座争创优秀旅游城市的闹市区傲视全城市民和八方游客好几天。认
真一点 ，是可以译得好的。

改译：build xx into a top tourist city of china.

例6：xx市人民政府??

原译：the government of peoples republic of xx.

这一有严重政治错误的译文曾赫然印在xx市一本对外宣传画册上，
而画册是在境外印制的。 那么，译者若非别有用心，就是极不负责
任了，把一个城市译成个“共和国”！

应 当指出，境外有不少认真严谨的译品，由于文化背景、语言环境
和外语思维的缘故，水平是高的或比较高 的；但是，要译起中国大
陆的社会、政治、经济术语，政府机构人员职务，技术职称,以及有
地 方特色的专有词语等，则由于情况不明、背景不清，准确率往往
不高。对此，我们应有实事求是的认识。

标语翻译，是一项严谨、认真的学术活动，万万马虎不得，更万万
不能随心所欲， 不懂装懂，视严肃之事为儿戏。

2. 标语英译的语句特点

研究标语 问题，先要了解什么是标语。标语的英文是slogan；而
slogan的中文是标语、□号。何物s logan?它是古时苏格兰和爱尔
兰人的战争呐喊battle cry,也是一种集合信号gathering word，有
引人注意和令人难忘的特点(striking and easily remembe red)，有

很强的号召力和鼓动力。slogan,喊出来是口号，写出来是标语,有 如
下的语句特点：

2.1 引人注意，令人难忘

标语引人注 意、令人难忘的特点会产生引起人们兴趣的视觉效果，
使人易于记忆。海湾战争时期，笔者在夏威夷就见 过一条毕生难忘
的标语：

例7：i want you to the army！

其时，美国出兵伊拉克，国内征兵起高潮，大街上的海报中，征兵
官员 伸出的手指着观者的鼻子似的，产生迎头一喝的效果：我要你
去当兵！适龄应征者见了，怎么也忘不了。 笔者认

识的一些入了美国籍的华裔青年,顿有惶惶之感。

例8：tobacco kills more people than heroin cocaine.

美国三藩市要求大麻合法化的人抛出上述的口号标语，说明那个社
会无奇不有。但标语本身，委实引人注目。

例9：肇庆市公安局报警中心

原译：zhaoqing city center of reporting to the police.

此译与香港街上常见的“报案中心”的译文police report centre相
比，就逊色多了。先让police赫然入目，真让急于找地方报案的人
心头一 亮：可找到了！原译文却拖泥带水，不够利落。

改译：police report centre of zhaoqing city(其实,此处的of
zhaoqing city也不必用上).

例10：来肇庆两天，游两个名城: 国家级历史文化名城，国家级风
景名胜区。

标语的设计者在一巨幅广告牌上把“来 我市两天，游两个名城”写成
较大的字体，把后边的解释性文字写成较小的字。英译时，可先把
引人注意的两句话译出来,然后译解释的部分,如下：

别担心总会有办法的。

work out（某种事情）有效的，切实可行，成功。比如：the plan
worked out badly. 计划实行得很不成功。

5. you can do anything if you really want to. thats the spirit!

只要你想做，你就一定能做得到。那才是好样的！

that’s the spirit! 用于鼓励他人的勇气、决心，意思是那样才对，
那才算好样的。
