This is not the world we know. This world is controlled by computers. Men and women can be seen, but they are

following the orders given to them by machines. The machines were designed by mad scientists, but at some point even

the mad scientists were taken over by their super- inventions.

Does this sound familiar? You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film. Why is it so

popular? One of the reasons is that it reflects the fears of many people; fear of the unknown fear of what is not

understood or, at least, fear of something that is not completely understood.

The fact is that every day it seems that computers take control of another area of our lives. Some

factory jobs are now done by robots and the robots are controlled by computers. Our bank accounts are managed by

computers. At the airport, our tickets are sold by a computer. Certainly, many of these operations are made more

efficient by computers, but our admiration is sometimes mixed with unsafe feelings. And this lack of safety is caused by

the fact that we do not know how computers do these things, and we really don't know what they might do next.

But we can find out how computers work, and once we understand them, we can use computers instead of worrying

about being used by them. Today, there is a new generation of computer wizards who know exactly how computers get

things done. These young men and women, usually university students, are happy to sit for hours, sometimes for days,

designing programs, not eating, not sleeping, but discovering what can be done by these wonderful slaves which they

have learned to control. These computer wizards have learned to use the computer and search for new tasks for their

machines.

In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a

very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.

The next important date in the history of photography

took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his pictures you could see

everything very clearly

even the smallest things. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype.

Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world.

People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.

In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers

(摄影家)

could take pictures of people and moving

things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them,

for example, some in the United States worked so hard.

Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual

because they were very lifelike

(栩栩如生的)

Photography also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real

Everything lives with opposite forces. The same can be said about modern technology, such as Internet. At first

glance Internet offers us excitement and a worl of promise. Frankly speaking, people who have some ideas of it can not

deny the merits born with the system. For instance,it can improve proficiency in scientific research, for by means of it

scientists and researchers can get a global look at the latest development in the field concerned and accordingly they

need spend no time doing what has already been done. In view of personal communication, the most convenient means

could be peculiar to Internet, too.

While people speak highly of Internet, its drawbacks shouldn't be neglected. Sometimes, alittle fatal breakdown of the

system, or a disastrous error could bring us an enormous amount of damage and loss. Meanwhile, with lnternet's

replacement of hooks or the written work as the main source of information, human's writing abilities are weakened and

relations between people are desalinated

However, every country on this planet should work hard

to develop the system to serve us more efficiently and comfortably, because in the net all countries are interrelated.

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a

new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're

feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the

forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such

familiar monologues as:

is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarreling ends when husbands and wives realize

what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family including their kid has.

You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes.

Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (

对抗

) your cycle to some extent

by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do

early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your

low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (

呵欠

) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed

a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the

night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration

for your sharper hours.

The purpose of this part of the book is to help you become more efficient in reading by speeding up the process

generally. Most people can learn to cover material much faster than they do now while maintaining a high level of

comprehension.

Improvement in reading efficiency has several major benefits. We need reading skills to benefit from the wealth

of information that is now available in printed form. Most people get the rough outlines of their daily news from

television and radio. However, the printed word still provides the in-depth coverage of topics that really produces

well- informed

people. Reading is also a great source of entertainment for many people. For

students, it is the primary method of studying.

The time you now spend reading can be made much more productive by increasing your reading rate. For some people

this will mean that they can obtain more information in the same length of time. For others it will mean that time now

devoted to reading can be used in other more interesting and profitable ways.

To determine how fast you are reading, you first have to get some idea of the number of words in a given passage. Then

you simply divide the number of words by the number of minutes it takes to read. That will give your rate in words per

minute.

范文:

People can’t imagine life without water. Without it, the earth we live on would be a dead one. However, nowadays water

crisis has become a problem worldwide. People cannot have adequate clean drinking water.

Although nearly three quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with water, it is sea water and undrinkable. The demand

for water is increasing, while water resources are scarce. Agricultural production needs enormous amounts of water, so

does industry. Besides, the rapid growth of population makes it more and more difficult for people to survive because of

the water shortage. So water shortage has become one of the most serious problems.

学而不思则惘,思而不学则殆

Fortunately, people have realized this pressing problem and are trying to find ways to salve it. First, people are urged to

economize on water. Second, measures are taken to protect water resources. Third, circulating water is used for industrial

purposes over and over in factories and treated sewage water is used for irrigation in farming land.

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert

Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how

you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm

muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child

psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often, and give them problems to think about. The

children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal

with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

Parents should also be careful what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always

telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is

probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as

As is the case we can see, the rapid development of computer technology is exerting profound impact on our life, almost

in every aspect. In addition to the use in working, computers are finding their way into the home. They are so intelligent

that they seem to be able to solve all problems; consequently, some people say that it will sooner or later take the place

of human beings.

As for me, I firmly hold the view that there is no such possibility on the grounds that computers are but machines, made

by humans. They can only do as humans instruct them and our tasks are far too complicated for any machines to

undertake.

For human, there is one thing that computers can never accomplish, that is, the former can make decision by their own

while the latter can do nothing unless they are programmed.

In my opinion, computers will remain nothing but an extension of human brains, no matter how clever and sophisticated

they will become.
